Interviews : Joey Bada$$ & CJ Fly Decode “Hardknock” (Video)

Who Is Joey Bada$$?
Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott (born January 20, 1995), better known by his stage name Joey Badass (stylised as Joey Bada$$), is an independent American rapper, producer and artist from Brooklyn, New York. He is a member of the hip hop collective Pro.Era, with whom he has released two mixtapes. Joey released his debut mixtape 1999 in June 2012 to critical acclaim, followed by Rejex in September.

Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott was born in 1995 and is the first of his immediate West Indian family to be born in the United States while raised in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, New York, and attended the Edward R. Murrow High School. He has three brothers and one sister. He originally enrolled at Edward R. Murrow to study acting, but transitioned towards music around the time of 9th grade, with a focus on rapping. He started rapping under the name JayOhVee, but eventually changed it to Joey Bada$$. He says that the name change is due to the media's focus on rappers with more cynical names. Joey said it was: "what sounded cool at the time, what fit my mood." Joey claims to have first started writing poetry and songs at the age of 11. Joey formed the collective known as Progressive Era in high school with classmates the late Capital STEEZ, CJ Fly and Pow Pe.

In October 2010, Joey uploaded a video of himself freestyling to video-sharing website YouTube. The video was re-posted on to American hip-hop site World Star Hip Hop and caught the attention of Jonny Shipes, the president of Cinematic Music Group and manager of Big K.R.I.T. & Smoke DZA. Shipes contacted Joey through Twitter and shortly became his manager. The Pro.Era collective have since signed with the label.

In early 2012, Joey and Capital STEEZ released a video for "Survival Tactics" via their YouTube channel "PROfckingERA", which samples the 1999 song of the same name by Styles of Beyond. In February 2012, Pro.Era released their debut mixtape entitled The Secc$ Tape along with JaySteez, CJ Fly, Kirk Knight, Dessy Hinds, T'nah, Bruce Leekix, Han$ $olo, and A La $ole. On March 21, 2012, MTV News featured Joey's verse from the video during a RapFix Live segment and subsequently appeared as a featured guest on Sucker Free the following month. The song was succeeded with the video premiere of "Hardknock" featuring CJ Fly on MTV2.

In the summer of 2012, Joey released his debut solo mixtape 1999. A video for the song "Waves" was released in June 2012. The mixtape immediately increased Bada$$'s popularity in the underground scene. The mixtape was named the 38th best album of 2012 by Complex Magazine and the best mixtape of 2012 by HipHopDX.com.

Subsequently, American rapper Mac Miller reached out to Joey Bada$$ through Twitter to collaborate. Joey appears on the song "America" and opened for Miller at the Roseland Ballroom in April 2012. Along with headliner Juicy J, Joey and Pro Era performed on The Smoker's Club's One Hazy Summer Tour, presented by Ecko Unltd. and livemixtapes.com. The 30-date tour began in July 2012. He is featured on the posse cut track "1 Train" off ASAP Rocky's album Long.Live.ASAP (2012) which also features Action Bronson, Kendrick Lamar, Yelawolf, Big K.R.I.T., and Danny Brown.

In December 2012 it was rumored that Joey Bada$$ will be signing to Jay-Z's Roc Nation record label. On December 21, 2012, Pro Era and Joey Bada$$ released the P.E.E.P: the aPROcalypse mixtape.

On December 24, 2012, It was announced that Capital STEEZ, a close friend of Joey and member of Pro Era, had passed away due to a suspected suicide.

Joey Bada$$ released a new single, "Unorthodox" which is produced by DJ Premier and may be included on his debut album. (Read More)

Who is Rich Quick?
Born and raised in Woodbury, NJ, Quick spent years writing elementary raps as a youth. In middle-school, Quick met two other young rap artists named Anthony "Loc" McCoy and Maurice "Moe Psalms" Junius, then known as Moe Cheeks. They set out to develop a super-group of vicious emcee's which would prove to be unstoppable in the local Hip-Hop scene. The group, known as Rag Tag, due to it's diverse and disorderly composition, gradually grew to six members; Loc, Moesama,
J-Wev, Patch, Shad Dook and of course, Rich Quick.

Composed of solo-artists, the group began releasing mixtapes in 2002. Their slew of steady releases kept Rag Tag's name in the mouths of the young Hip-Hoppers within the city. In 2002 Rich Quick released hiz first solo project, Get Rich Quick, +hiz follow up LP "The Movement" in 2004.

Rag Tag obtained their own studio in late 2006. It was set up in Rich Quick's house, a gritty row-home where the parties never stopped and music was the main focus. The studio was dubbed "The Krillage". By 2007 the streets were flooded with Rag Tag releases from Moesama, Patch, Loc and Rich Quick. Constant collaborations with local artists attributed to Rag Tag's promotional success.

During a brief period with local Blakout Records, Rag Tag suffered some set backs as a group. But Rich Quick arose from the rubble. He immediately linked back up with Ccelli and Jodie (former Blakout associates) and joined the roster of Exponent Entertainment, a Philadelphia based Hip-Hop management company. Quick now shares thedeck with J. Griff, DJ NoPhrillz and Benja Styles as well as many other up and coming local talent.

Expect to see much more from Rich Quick. He is currently winning over Hip-Hop blog-sites and fans all across the world with his sincere style, all the while finishing up his latest and biggest mixtape project, I'm With The DJ hosted by DJ NoPhrillz and Benja Styles. Look out for collaborations with Reed Dollaz, Sound Barrier Experience, E.Ness, and more. It has been a long journey for Rich Quick, but it has only just begun. Stay tuned.

Who is Dom Kennedy?
Dominic Hunn (born August 22, 1984), better known by his stage name Dom Kennedy, is an American rapper from Leimert Park, Los Angeles, California. Since 2008, Kennedy has released 5 Independent record label mixtapes, most notably his 2010 "critically acclaimed mixtape" From the Westside with Love. His first commercial studio album From the Westside with Love II was released on iTunes June 28, 2011. Despite it being his iTunes debut, FTWSWL2 received "a top 10 spot on Hip Hop/Rap albums chart during its release week" and was Kennedy's first album associated with The OpM Company, Kennedy's self established record label. (Read More)

Yellow Album Review
Dom successfully creates a set that allows him to project his talents best while capturing the essence of summer. Production wise, this mixtape is full of BBQ bangers that will ring out of stereos all season, as the California native enlists a class of rising beatsmiths in THC, Chase N. Cashe and more. Early on, “Been Thuggin,” produced by rap group Fly Union, breathes life into the tape, and soon “Girls On Stage” offers the smooth, mellow sound that typically allows DK to create his best work.

Dom has found his comfort zone lyrically, and effortlessly creates tracks that allow the listeners to get a better feel of the Cali native personally. His stoic demeanor shines brightest on cuts like “We Ballin,” alongside Compton native Kendrick Lamar. Dom brings along Maybach Music head honcho Rick Ross to create a track that is the epitome of his unique brand of Left Coast Cool on “Gold Alpinas.”

Conceptually, the project showcases Kennedy’s many ways to show love to the ladies. He carefully chooses artists to collaborate with that that will kick solid verses while not straying from the theme of the project, exemplified by Too $hort on “Don’t Call Me.” Even so, the project does have its dull moments and, at times, it can leave fans seeking for a wider range of subject matter to give more substance to the mixtape. Nonetheless, the self-proclaimed Leimert Park Legend whips up a project that will be welcomed with open arms by his fanbase.

Yellow Album showcases Dom Kennedy’s laid back, yet still engaging flow. Though it’s not his strongest work to date, the release again reminds that Dom Kennedy has what it takes to make him an ambassador for the New West movement. — Christian Mordi (@Mordi_TheComeUp)

Jon Connor Tributes MC Breed, Addresses Controversy On Eminem-Inspired Release
Jon Connor made another addition to his prolific discography in today's free, Eminem-inspired "The People's Rapper LP"—and Flint listeners will hear a tribute to one of its most popular musicians midway through the project.

While rapping over the instrumental to "Stan," Eminem's award-winning song about an obsessive fan, Connor uses the first two verses to pay homage to fallen rap legends 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. But the third verse gets extra hometown flavor, as he speaks about fellow Flint rapper MC Breed.

The beginning of the verse recounts Connor nervously meeting Breed when he was 20 years old, and how the encounter instilled hometown pride. "Instead of being a city under a dark cloud, you gave us a reason to say 'Flint' and say it loud," he rhymed.

The latter half of the verse addresses controversy that aroise last summer, when Connor released "Ain't No Future 2011," an ode to Breed's hit single "Ain't No Future In Yo Frontin'" that peaked at no. 66 in the Billboard Hot 100. The song racked thousands of YouTube views, but reports later surfaced that Breed's wife, Natasha Breed, was suing Connor for copyright infringement since the song was on iTunes.

"I never listened to the haters, never listened to the comments, 'cuz I promise that my remake was a tribute, paying homage," Connor raps. "...Never thought that I'd get backlash for that song, because how could such good intentions get taken so wrong?"

"But when Erica came and hugged me with tears in her eyes, I knew that what I did was right, and felt your tears from the sky," he concluded, referring to Breed's daughter. (Read More)

Videos : Ronvé : Workin

Ronvé is an American rapper, producer and actor, born in Queens, New York, where he lived until he was four years old. After his parents divorced, he and his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, then eventually to Marietta, GA where he was raised. At the age of ten, Ronvé was introduced to hip-hop music by his older brother. Heavily influenced and inspired, Ronvé began writing his own raps and performing original songs with neighborhood friends while in middle school. In an effort to find an outlet for his creativity (and meet girls), he auditioned and was accepted into Pebblebrook High School, in Mableton, GA, a nationally recognized magnet school for the performing arts. While attending, he continued to write and perform hip-hop music, while also studying all aspects of voice, dance and drama.

After high school graduation, Ronvé was accepted into Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio – a school with a renowned theatre arts department. He attended WSU on a full scholarship as a musical theatre and acting major. He earned featured roles in several productions, while also finding his voice as an artist. These were crucial years in Ronvé’s artistic development, as he began to perfect his technique as a music producer. He spent countless hours crafting beats and creating a sound that would eventually become the foundation of his style.

After graduating with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in 2006, Ronvé returned to Marietta to pursue a full time career as a rapper/producer and actor. As a rapper, Ronvé was a member of an alternative hip-pop group called The Undergrads, which achieved mild success as an independent group in Atlanta. Together, they released one mixtape and two full length albums. They performed as opening acts for mainstream artists such as Kelly Rowland, Bone Crusher, and Travis Porter. As a producer, he worked with notable artists and producers such as 2 Chainz, DJ Toomp, and DJ Jelly. (Read More)
