Who Are The Features?

The Features' exhilarating new Wilderness (Serpents and Snakes/BMG Rights) quickly establishes the Nashville-based combo as one of the most exciting and imaginative bands working today. Songs like "Another One" and "Fats Domino" are marvels of pop ingenuity, animated by vivid lyrics, unshakable hooks, and experimental soul. Wilderness is an amalgamation of influences and inspirations – spanning elements of Krautrock, indie, psychedelia, and classic AOR – to conjure up The Features' own inimitable, indescribable sound.

"I feel like we walk this fine line," says singer/guitarist Matt Pelham. "We're not weird enough for a certain crowd and we're a little bit too out there for the other crowd. We fall in the middle somewhere between mainstream and hipster, which puts us in this weird place, but we're all pretty happy to be here."

The album, which follows 2009's acclaimed Some Kind Of Salvation, (released on Kings of Leon's label, Serpents and Snakes, a venture with music publisher, Bug Music), began coming together upon The Features' return home after a lengthy 2010 tour alongside Manchester Orchestra. Pelham and fellow Features Roger Dabbs (bass), Mark Bond (keyboards), and Rollum Haas (drums) enjoyed a brief domestic hiatus before quickly hitting the practice space to woodshed new material. Wilderness was produced with Brian Carter, who recorded their 2003 release, The Beginning EP, and engineer Craig Alvin at Carter's Paradox Productions Recording Service in Nashville, Tennessee.

Coming into the studio straight away off the road gave The Features a full head of steam, which meshed with their desire to capture some of their on-stage power. The goal, Pelham says, was to make a record that sounded, "like the band was playing live in your living room."

The result of the month-long sessions is as painstakingly crafted as it is full-on, with Pelham's distinctive songcraft expertly matched by the band's sonic inventiveness. "Big Mama" and "Rambo" had already been staples of The Features' live show, while tracks like the swingin' psych-pop opener "Content" were spontaneously created in the studio. Other highlights include the prog-fueled "Golden Comb, with its dynamic tempo changes and multipart arrangement, and the howling rocker, "Kids," which brandishes the Tennessean band's native gift for their own version of meaty, big beat boogie.

"I was hearing The Monks in my head," Haas says of the latter track, "but I think it ended up coming out sounding more like Deep Purple."

"It's funny," Pelham says, "all of us at this point seem to have gone back to things we grew up listening to. We've started to reappreciate classic rock, which was all we could get where we lived. It wasn't until I went to college in Murfreesboro that I found there was another world outside of things like Tom Petty."

Since releasing The Beginning EP in 2003, The Features have assembled quite the catalog of accomplishments, spanning single releases on the UK's trendsetting Fierce Panda label, two well-received albums, and a long history of tours as headliners as well as supporting such like-minded artists as their pals Kings of Leon. As Wilderness demonstrates, the spirit of musical adventure continues to both define and motivate The Features.

"We've always kept moving with new material," Haas says. "Even when we rehearse, we tend to not go through old songs. I've seen a lot of bands that rehearse the material down to where I think everyone would get bored of it. When we get together, even if it's to rehearse for a tour, we tend to work on new ideas."

"That's the exciting part for us," says Pelham, "to be in a practice space, creating a song. The more we do that, the more fun we have as a band. We like touring and playing live, but the creative process of putting a song together is the rush for everybody. So the more we can write and create, the more excitement there is within the band."

With Wilderness, The Features have crafted yet another exceptional installment in what is shaping up as quite the impressive body of work. Ever evolving and always ambitious, this is a band in it for the long haul. The Features can't imagine it any other way.

"I think most guys would've quit," Haas says, "but all of us just love playing music. That's the biggest part of it. We haven't gotten bored with it yet."

"Since we were kids, the only thing any of us ever wanted to do was play music," says Pelham. "We aren't really happy doing anything other than that. At this point, it's gone on so long that I don't know what else we would do. It's all we know."

Who Is Beach House?

Beach House is a dream pop duo from Baltimore, Maryland, formed in 2004. The band consists of French-born Victoria Legrand and Baltimore native Alex Scally. The group's self-titled debut, Beach House (2006), was critically acclaimed. This was followed by its second release, Devotion, in 2008. The band released its third studio album, Teen Dream in January 2010, to critical acclaim and commercial success. Their fourth album, Bloom, was released in 2012 and garnered positive feedback.

The band formed in 2004, composed of Alex Scally, who plays the guitar and keyboard, and Victoria Legrand, who sings and plays the organ. Beach House began as a recording project, thus, its music favored simplicity. The band's music consisted largely of the organ, programmed drums, and the slide guitar. Said Legrand to Pitchfork Media, "It's a way to challenge ourselves: What do you do when it's just the two of you?". Scally affirmed, "One of the reasons this has been such a fulfilling experience for me is that with two people, it's so much easier to achieve things that feel exciting and new."

The song "Apple Orchard" was featured on a Pitchfork Media MP3 mixtape in August 2006. In October 2006 the band's self-titled debut album, Beach House, was released through Carpark Records. That year, Pitchfork Media ranked it 16th on its Best Albums list.

The band has toured extensively. In March 2009, the band was featured at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.

In April 2010, the band performed at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California. In June 2010, the band surmounted "technical difficulties due to too much MDMA" while playing a set on The Park Stage at Glastonbury. In August 2010, the band joined Vampire Weekend on tour as one of their two opening acts, the other being the Dum Dum Girls. In October 2010, Beach House played at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. On December 20, 2010 the band performed on Conan.

The band was chosen by Animal Collective to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival they curated in May 2011, and also by Portishead to perform at the ATP I'll Be Your Mirror festival that they curated in July 2011 at London's Alexandra Palace. On May 29, 2011 the band played at the Sasquatch! Music Festival. On July 31, 2011 the band played at the Fuji Rock music festival in Niigata, Japan. On October 16, 2011, the band played at the Treasure Island Music Festival. On May 18, 2012, they appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman and on Sunday July 15, 2012, they performed the closing set on the Red Stage during the Pitchfork Music Festival.

In May 2012, the band appeared on Later... with Jools Holland playing "Myth" and "Lazuli" from their 2012 album, Bloom. On July 26, 2012 they performed the Bloom cuts "Wild" and "Wishes" on The Jimmy Fallon Show.

New Year Review 

The seasonally appropriate track is taken from the duo's fourth album 'Bloom', which came out last May (2012) and became their highest-charting effort yet, peaking at Number Seven in the US and Number 15 in the UK.

The 'New Year' video features time lapse footage from the recording sessions for the album, which took place at the Sonic Ranch studio in Tornillo, Texas during 2011. Fans of cats are unlikely to be disappointed with what they see. 

Explaining the concept behind the 'New Year' clip, Beach House posted on YouTube: "It's more of a home video thing, not a music video... we just thought these moments and the memories they involve fit this song."

Beach House began a tour of Australia on January 3 and return to the UK for a pair of London dates in the spring. The duo will headline at the Shepherd's Bush Empire venue on March 26 and 27.

Who Is Pulp People?

Pulp are an English alternative rock band formed in Sheffield in 1978. Their lineup consists of Jarvis Cocker (vocals, guitar), Candida Doyle (keyboards), Mark Webber (guitar), Steve Mackey (bass) and Nick Banks (drums). Leo Abrahams has been a touring member of the band since they reunited in 2011, contributing electric and acoustic guitar.

Throughout the 1980s, the band struggled to find success, but gained prominence in the UK in the mid-1990s with the release of the albums His 'n' Hers in 1994 and particularly Different Class in 1995, which reached the number one spot in the UK Albums Chart. Different Class spawned four top ten singles, including "Common People" and "Sorted for E's & Wizz", both of which reached number two in the UK Singles Chart. Pulp's musical style during this period consisted of disco influenced pop-rock coupled with "kitchen sink drama"-style lyrics. Jarvis Cocker and the band became reluctant figures in the Britpop movement, and were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 1994 for His 'n' Hers; they won the prize in 1996 for Different Class. They headlined the Pyramid Stage of the Glastonbury Festival twice.

The band would release two further albums, This Is Hardcore (1998) and We Love Life (2001), after which they entered an extended hiatus, having sold more than 10 million records.

On 8 November 2010, it was announced that Pulp would return to playing live in 2011, with dates at the Isle of Wight Festival, Reading and Leeds Festivals, Sziget Festival, Primavera Sound, the Exit festival, and the Wireless Festival. Who is SBTRKT?

SBTRKT (pronounced as "subtract") is the musical project led by Aaron Jerome. Jerome began his career as a DJ in the east London club "Plastic People". SBTRKT has remixed songs by artists such as M.I.A, Radiohead, Modeselektor, Basement Jaxx, Mark Ronson, Underworld and Goldie, and has released singles, EPs, and a self-titled album. SBTRKT's music is a mixture of Future garage, two-step, UK funky, dubstep, US R&B and Chicago house. His music has been placed in rotation by BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 6 Music.

SBTRKT refers also to the live musical duo of Jerome and his frequent collaborator Sampha. Their live show consists of Jerome utilizing electronic and acoustic drums alongside triggering samples and using a mixing desk, with Sampha playing keyboards, triggering vocal loops and singing.

The reason Jerome uses the project's title as opposed to him using his own name is to support the concept of anonymity. Jerome has explained "I'd rather not talk about myself as a person, and let the music speak for itself. The name SBTRKT is me taking myself away from that whole process. I'm not a social person, so having to talk to DJs to make them play a record is not something I want to do. It's more about giving them a record as an anonymous person and seeing whether they like it or not. If they play it, they play it."

To further support SBTRKT's anonymity, SBTRKT wears modern interpretations of native society ceremonial masks designed by Hidden Place. (Read More)

Who is Tegan and Sara?

Tegan and Sara’s 13-year career has seen them build an avid global following of fans and fellow musicians alike. Their unique ability to bridge the pop and indie worlds has allowed their music to cross all traditional boundaries of genre, from being covered by The White Stripes to collaborating with superstar DJs such as Tiesto and David Guetta. Having sold nearly 1 million career albums and toured with acts from The Killers to Neil Young, Tegan and Sara are now positioned for the release of their 7th studio album – Heartthrob – as internationally-celebrated songwriters, performers, and artists.

Tegan Quin and Sara Quin were born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1980 and began playing guitar and writing songs at age 15. Following the release of their first independent full-length album, Under Feet Like Ours, in 1999, they caught the attention of Neil Young’s iconic manager, Elliot Roberts, who quickly signed them to his Los Angeles-based label, Vapor Records. Tegan and Sara’s first international release on Vapor, This Business Of Art, was followed by extensive worldwide touring, including opening slots with Neil Young himself and a first appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman.

In 2002, the band released If It Was You, a foundational moment in Tegan and Sara’s creative path and musical identity. Its fresh sonic template and critical success in the US set up their fourth studio album, So Jealous, which ultimately provided their global breakthrough. On the heels of 6 separate song placements on Grey’s Anatomy, a US radio hit in “Walking With A Ghost”, and a North American tour opening for The Killers, So Jealous cemented Tegan and Sara’s status as one of Canada’s pre-eminent songwriting forces and musical exports.

In 2007, the release of The Con brought even more critical and commercial acclaim to Tegan and Sara. The album was co-produced by Chris Walla, with members of Death Cab for Cutie, Weezer and AFI all appearing in supporting musician roles. Tegan and Sara’s most recent album, Sainthood, was released in 2009 and was accompanied by a self-published three-volume book set titled ON / IN / AT, which chronicled a year in the life of Tegan and Sara, in both words and pictures. Sainthood was ultimately nominated for a Juno Award and the Polaris Prize. One of the album’s singles, “Alligator,” was remixed by many artists including Four Tet, Passion Pit, Ra Ra Riot, and VHS or Beta, and the collection was released on vinyl in 2010.

In 2011, Tegan and Sara released GET ALONG a cd/dvd set that includes a live record and collection of 3 films that give a rare and intimate look into their lives and music. The first film, ‘States’ uses American touring footage and interviews; the second film, ‘India’ chronicles their first ever tour of India; and the third film, ‘For The Most Part’ is a special 1hr 10min stripped-down studio concert, shot with a live audience of 75 fans, friends and family over two days in Vancouver, Canada. The live record features music recorded during these concerts.

Tegan and Sara have played countless festivals around the world including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and have toured with artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Neil Young, The Pretenders, The Killers, Jack Johnson, Ben Folds, City and Colour, Death Cab For Cutie, Weezer and Paramore. Since 2003, they have headlined tours in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, consistently selling out theatres around the world. Their music has been featured in major network television programs including 90210, Parenthood, Grey’s Anatomy, Veronica Mars, The Vampire Diaries, and One Tree Hill. They have performed multiple times on Letterman, Leno and Conan. They have collaborated with artists in all genres, from superstar DJs such as Tiesto, to seminal literary figures such as Augusten Burroughs. Their original 2004 breakthrough song, “Walking with a Ghost,” was eventually paid the high honour of being covered by The White Stripes.

Though their music is not overtly political, Tegan and Sara are very politically and socially engaged. They are outspoken advocates for LGBT equality, and have done countless fundraisers for youth organizations, music education, literacy, cancer research and LGBT advocacy.

The sisters enjoy reading, hair, ships, vampires, hot dogs, talking and relating to elderly people, self-soothing, rearranging furniture, and giving excellent advice.

Tegan lives in L.A. and Vancouver, Sara lives in NYC and Montreal.

Who Is Never Shout Never?

Never Shout Never is an American Indie pop band, formed in Joplin, Missouri in 2007. The group has released three full-length albums and two EPs. The name "Never Shout Never" originally referred exclusively to Christofer Drew Ingle before the touring band, previously referred to as "The Shout", all became "Never Shout Never" with Ingle as front man.

Christofer Drew Ingle began making music as Never Shout Never in 2007 (age 16). His first exposure came through the internet, where he achieved success on Myspace before issuing the extended play, The Yippee Ep on July 29, 2008. On July 30, 2008, he was featured on TRL, where he performed his single "Bigcitydreams." He toured with Hellogoodbye and Ace Enders in the fall of 2008.

As of November 17, 2008, the official spelling of Ingle's alias became NeverShoutNever! In 2008, the band had a slight name change and excluded the "!" from NeverShoutNever! to become Never Shout Never. The spelling has been updated on iTunes and his management company's site. An official statement regarding the reason behind the spelling change has not been made available.

Never Shout Never started touring with The Scene Aesthetic, The Honorary Title, and The Bigger Lights in late February 2009 and then toured with bands such as Forever the Sickest Kids, The Cab, We the Kings, and Mercy Mercedes, among others in spring 2009 as part of The Bamboozle Roadshow 2009. He played at both The Bamboozle Left 2009 and The Bamboozle 2009.

The Summer was released on June 23, 2009. The first single off the EP, titled "Happy," was released on iTunes on March 3, 2009. he performed on the Vans Warped Tour 2010, which toured all over the country.

It was announced on May 29, 2009, that Ingle had signed to Warner Bros. Records, ending a major-label bidding war. As part of the deal, Ingle will run and make releases on his own imprint label, Loveway Records.

The debut album from Never Shout Never, What Is Love?, was produced by Butch Walker and released in January 2010. Never Shout Never's second full length album, Harmony, was released in August of the same year.

In November 2010, Never Shout Never co-headlined the Harmony Tour, where they had fans gather can foods to help those in need. As a gift to the fans, Never Shout Never and The Maine released a live split EP. As of December 21, 2010, the split EP is available for free download on Never Shout Never's website.

The band's hometown, Joplin, Missouri, was heavily damaged by a tornado on May 22, 2011. Following the destruction, Christofer began a relief fund with United Way to raise $1 million for his hometown. To raise awareness about the devastation of Joplin, Christofer took video footage of the destruction and posted it on YouTube on June 1, 2011. The video, which features the song "Time Travel", encouraged viewers to donate to the relief of the town via his United Way fund.

Never Shout Never's third full-length album, Time Travel was released on September 20, 2011.

Never Shout Never had another US tour in April 2012 with Koji, Kurt Travis and Renee and the Translators. The band said that they would be returning to Europe in the summer and to Brazil, Argentina, and Chile later on in 2012.

Never Shout Never's fourth full-length album, Indigo was released November 13, 2012. They are currently on the Indigo tour. Christofer Drew first revealed the title in an interview with Alter The Press! on May 8, 2012, and on September 20, via his Twitter account, he announced the release date. (Read More)

Who Is Elle King?

Elle King (born 1989 as Tanner Elle Schneider) is an American musician signed to RCA Records whose musical style encompasses country, soul, rock, and blues. King was born in Los Angeles, and grew up between Wellston, Ohio and Columbus, Ohio. She currently resides in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York.  On June 12, 2012, Elle King released her four-song debut, The Elle King EP, on RCA/Fat Possum Records. The EP track “Playing for Keeps” has been chosen as the theme song for VH1’s Mob Wives Chicago series. Since the EP’s release, King has toured with Of Monsters and Men, Train, and Michael Kiwanuka. She is currently working on her debut full-length slated for an early 2013 release date.

King was born Elle Tanner Schneider in 1989 in Los Angeles to mother London King and father, former SNL cast member, Rob Schneider. Her parents divorced and her mother remarried. She grew up living in southern Ohio, between Wellston, Ohio and Columbus, Ohio. At age 9, her stepfather gave her a record by all-girl pop-punk band The Donnas. King counts that as a pivotal moment when she decided she wanted to be a musician. Around this time, she also started listening to the Runaways, Blondie, and she made her acting debut alongside her birthfather in the movie Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo. Three years later, at 13, she started playing guitar, immersing herself in the music of Otis Redding, the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, AC/DC (she has the band’s logo tattooed on her bicep), and Earl Scruggs. Her interest in the country and bluegrass music of Hank Williams and Earl Scruggs inspired her to learn the banjo. Elle King currently plays guitar and banjo.

King spent her teenage years in New York City, but she’s also lived in Los Angeles, California, Philadelphia, and Copenhagen. At 16, she started gigging around New York City, using a fake ID to gain entry to the local nightclubs.Upon graduating Elisabeth Irwin High School, she moved to Philadelphia to matriculate at University of the Arts, studying painting and film. King immersed herself in the local songwriting scene and honed her performance skills by busking around town. During these college years, she had an artistic epiphany seeing a live show where the band onstage used a banjo purely for accompaniment purposes, eschewing the bluegrass and country musical vocabulary traditionally associated with the instrument. King then began to use the banjo as a compositional tool. After college, she briefly lived in Copenhagen and LA, before moving back to New York. She currently resides in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Elle King was signed by newly appointed RCA Chairman Peter Edge, after he heard a song she demoed for her EMI Publishing deal. On June 12, 2012, the four-song The Elle King EP was released on RCA/Fat Possum Records. The EP featured the originals “Good To Be A Man,” “Playing For Keeps,” and “No Can Save You,” and a live cover of American female rapper Khia’s 2002 debut lead-off single "My Neck, My Back (Lick It)." The EP was recorded in New York and the studio tracks were produced by three separate producers. Andy Baldwin (whose credits include Richard Ashcroft, Björk, and David Gilmour) produced "Good To Be A Man.” Chris DeStefano (whose credits include Carrie Underwood, Howie D, and Kelly Clarkson) produced "Playing For Keeps.” Elle King produced "No One Can Save You." The EP track, “Good To Be A Man,” was originally released as a standalone single on March 13 to iTunes, and issued as a 7” vinyl single on Fat Possum Records on April 24, 2012. The track was inspired by a romantic disaster that occurred while King lived in Copenhagen. She counts writing the track as an artistic breakthrough. The track has been played by KCRW Santa Monica, XPN Philly, and RIF Detroit. The EP’s lead track, “Playing For Keeps,” was chosen as the theme song for VH1’s Mob Wives Chicago series that premiered June 10, 2012 on VH1. The show is a spinoff of VH1’s hit series Mob Wives. King has been spotlighted as an “Artist to Watch in 2012” by Esquire Magazine and Refinery 29. The Elle King EP has garnered favorable press from Entertainment Weekly, Esquire, Glamour, Perez Hilton, and Vanity Fair.

Elle King has played Austin, Texas at the South By Southwest Music Festival, as well as the London Hammersmith Apollo. Her television appearances include VH1 Big Morning Buzz Live and the Late Show with David Letterman. She has also taped her own PBS Arts In Context special for KLRU Austin at the historic Austin City Limits studio. She has toured with Train, Of Monsters and Men, and Michael Kiwanuka, and has opened for Dashboard Confessional, Dropkick Murphys, Dry the River, and Ed Sheeran. Who is MØ?

Karen Marie Ørsted, alias MØ, is being touted as the new Grimes, which is going to annoy the old Grimes something rotten, because old Grimes has only just stopped being touted as the new – well, what? Who was her predecessor? And who was her forebear's forebear? Who is the godmother of the current generation of women with synths, the Nite Jewels, Laurel Halos and Maria Minervas? Is it Claudia Brücken of Propaganda? Björk? Kate Bush?

While you're considering that, wondering how to type Ø on your keyboard (option + O) and pondering the meaning of MØ (it's old Norse for virgin, apparently), have a listen to MØ's two tracks, Pilgrim and Maiden. They're great, a bit glitchy, with some elements of dubstep, aware of most developments in soulfully-sung electronica between Portishead and AlunaGeorge. They certainly go some way towards confirming the notion that the Scandinavians do intelligent, commercial pop as well as, if not better than, the Americans or the British these days. Although, when we say "commercial", we don't necessarily mean "commercially successful" (something else to ponder: when did the last of the many touted and fabulous Scandipop would-be stars actually have a hit over here? We can't think of one).

Both songs are artfully produced, with lots of space and the vocals high up in the mix, allowing you to hear what Ørsted is singing: seemingly straighter songs about relationships than Grimes's irresistible, albeit more abstract takes on Infinite Love Without Fulfillment, and the connection between Vowels and Time/Space. These vocals are more in the sultry, seductive-siren register, with one ear cocked to Lana Del Rey, while the sizzling little guitar-figure on Maiden contrasts nicely with its cool electronics. Pilgrim is slower, heavy on the handclaps, the melody and pace seemingly based on mid-80s pop-disco favourite I Can't Wait by Nu Shooz. There is treated brass, a neat bass burble and cavernously spacious production that makes us think of Clipse's Grindin' sung by a Danish gamine, if indeed gamines aren't solely a Gallic phenomenon. One blogger called Pilgrim "your 'do bad shit' anthem for this weekend", and there is swearing on it, making it feel like an I Will Survive de nos jours. MØ's influences include: Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Major Lazer, Santigold, J Dilla, Twin Shadow, Little Dragon and Lykke Li. But, to save you time, we'll tell you which ones are discernible throughout Maiden and Pilgrim: Santigold and Lykke Li. Meantime, listen out for MØ's debut album, due early next year we're guessing, and if you happen to be in New York next week, she's at CMJ. Rumour has it Grimes won't be there as she's too busy working on her new goth-metal direction.
