Who Is Willy Moon?
Willy is 23, and whip-smart with a tinder-dry sense of humour. He loves the physical energy of Cab Calloway and Michael Jackson, the concision of the Ramones, and the style of film noir. He writes, records and produces everything on his own and he doesn’t blend different sounds; he smashes them together. There’s no middle ground. It’s as if rock’n’roll had been deep-frozen in 1965, just before the Beatles discovered acid, and abruptly reanimated 45 years later by a laptop hip hop producer.

Who is Casey Abrams?
21-year-old singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and American Idol finalist Casey Abrams, proves he is here to stay with his self-titled debut album on Concord Records.

Casey, co-wrote sang played bass, acoustic guitar, drums, Wurlitzer and even recorder. Casey Abrams opens with the finger-snapping cool of “Simple Life,” affirming there’s a genuine artist at work here. “Ghosts” and “Get Out,” prove Casey’s capability as a contemporary songwriter, “Wore Out My Soul” shows his R&B balladeer chops and he makes musical mini-movies on both “Great Bright Morning” and “Midnight Girl.”

“Blame It On Me” features Casey’s soulful bass line and vocal agility. Romantic desire is made sexy on “A Boy Can Dream,” and he delivers a vocal tour de force on “Dry Spell.” To cap the disc, Abrams pays homage to Ray Charles on “Hit The Road Jack” performed as a slinky duet with fellow Idol contestant Haley Reinhart (produced by Steve Jordan).

Casey Abrams’ story is that of a born natural, but it’s also the story of a person who studied diligently and worked extremely hard, striving toward his dream of a life in music. He was born in Austin, Texas to professionally accomplished, extraordinarily creative parents. Casey’s mother, Pamela Pierce, a screenwriter and teacher, also plays piano and sings. His father, Ira Abrams currently teaches at Idyllwild Arts Academy, the distinguished private school in the mountains above Palm Springs, California that proved instrumental in shaping Casey’s musical life. The walls of Casey’s childhood home resonated with, “the music of the 1950s and ‘60s,” he states. Even then, he was “hearing those blues riffs and little things that make a song what it is.”

At ten years old, Casey moved to Idyllwild and attended the Idyllwild Summer Arts program prior to enrolling in the academy. By sixth grade he began playing the electric bass guitar and in time gained proficiency on guitar, upright bass, cello, drums, even the sitar. In middle school he started recording orchestral arrangements of his own voice on his karaoke machine. “It was a dream,” he says of the school that cultivates students from diverse backgrounds in music, theatre, dance, visual art, creative writing, moving pictures and interdisciplinary arts. His jazz and upright bass instructor, Marshall Hawkins, played with Miles Davis and Roberta Flack. “He changed my life,” says Casey. “I’m a musician now thanks to Marshall.”

The incredible exposure to the entire range of timeless popular music had an intense influence on Casey’s development. He waxes rhapsodically about jazz icons like Oscar Peterson and Thelonious Monk and “the one song that really changed me: Cannonball Adderley’s version of ‘Autumn Leaves,’ Miles plays on it.” That’s just a small part of his inspiration. He lists James Taylor, Freddie Mercury, AC/DC and even Jack Black as major influences.

Abrams tried out for American Idol in Austin. “I had a heart attack when they chose me,” Casey recalls. “I was like: this is the ticket. As soon as I got that foot in the door I knew I could make it. I was so happy.”

Not too long afterwards, Abrams found himself in London recording his debut album. “It was the best experience, so fun,” he enthuses of being in London, working with producer Martin Terefe, whose credits include Jason Mraz, Train (the hit “Soul Sister”), Mary J Blige, KT Tunstall, a-ha, James Morrison, Martha Wainwright, Cat Stevens, Jamie Cullum and others. “I walked to work every morning to Kensaltown Studios, an amazing workshop filled with musicians, writers and producers. I buzzed the big green door, went up three flights of stairs into the room with the big green couches and just chilled. It didn’t feel like I was making an album, just having a good time, hanging out and making and writing music with friends. London’s just such a creative place.”

Casey Abrams reflects the organic creativity he found with his collaborators and the ensuing natural ease that was a hallmark of making it. Even though his prodigious artistic gifts and widescreen creative vision augur many great things in the future, his ambition at heart remains very simple. “I want to make music that people love.” And so he has on his first album, and will continue to do for some time to come.

Listen To Local Natives : Hummingbird

Who Are the Local Natives?
Follow up to their 2010 “Gorilla Manor”. The band built a studio/rehearsal space in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles to work on Hummingbird, before recording in Montreal and then Brooklyn, where they produced it with the National’s Aaron Dessner. Humminbird it’s one of the most anticipated album downloads of 2013 and we’re here to keep up with the leaks. Speaking to Pitchfork about working with Dessner, Local Natives’ Matt Frazier said: “One night, after maybe drinking a little bit too much, he was like, “Maybe I should work with you guys.” We were like, “Sure, buddy.” After meeting with all these other producers, it just seemed like we should work with somebody we really get along with and respect as a songwriter.”

Hummingbird Review
Less than a minute into Hummingbird, the sophomore effort from LA band Local Natives, keyboardist/vocalist Kelcey Ayer makes a stark confession: “I woke up with my green eyes blue/And all I think about is you/And it feels”. In the remaining three minutes of the heartbreaking opening track, he never finishes that thought. Hummingbird embodies a similar idea: the struggle of continuing on in the face of post-crisis uncertainty, but unlike the opening lament, the Silverlake quartet have emerged stronger, boldly heading in, as Ayer phrases it, “places we don’t know.”

Although their signature agile vocal harmonies and tight instrumental interplay remains, the most noticeable change on Hummingbird is that the tone is decidedly more blue than the light-infused mindset of their 2009 debut Gorilla Manor, and it’s resulted in a richer, more layered album from the group. The shift in mood could be attributed to a number of things - notably bassist Andy Hamm’s 2010 departure from the band and the death of Ayer’s mother last summer - but the band’s ability to channel their reactions to the lows of the past two years shows an incredible musical growth from the last record. As musicians, they’re more aware of their melodic gifts and, even better, how to restrain them in order to create a polyphonous tension. They no longer use three-part harmonies as their go-to tool to make a song explode out of the listener’s speakers; instead, they’ve learned a sense of restraint that suits them well, often letting one singer take the reins while the other three members form a swirling, circular rhythm to support him. “Mt. Washington” and “Colombia”, a pair of slow, somber ballads that would’ve sounded somewhat out of place on the last record, showcase the band’s compelling chemistry more than any one songwriting or performance element, and after the rough two years the group have had, it’s thrilling to see four artists becoming musically closer than ever.

Although guitarist Taylor Rice pulled double duty playing bass for the record, Hummingbird is not the work of solely Rice, Ayer, guitarist Ryan Hahn, and drummier Matt Frazier. Manning the boards is The National guitarist/producer Aaron Dessner, who succesfully elevated Sharon Van Etten’s heart-piercing confessionals to a new level on last year’s terrific Tramp, and his influence here cannot be understated. As he’s shown with his day job, Dessner is a pro at synthesizing baroque and rock elements into a darkly gorgeous mix, and for better or worse, he’s done it again here. There are a few moments on here - the drum pattern on “Heavy Feet”, the guitar intro to “Mt. Washington”, the pounding verses of “Wooly Mammoth” - that are only a slightly veiled alcohol reference away from being a National song - where the band is crushed by Dessner’s influence, but it’s the same meticulous attention to the album’s production and arrangement that brings out the best in the band. “Columbia”, “Mt. Washington”, and “You & I” all easily rank among the band’s best songs, and it’s hard to imagine these tracks being as strong without Dessner’s presence.

Although Hummingbird is a very layered album about perseverance, it also carries a strong sense of urgency, and doesn’t pull too many punches when it comes to getting the band’s point across. “Am I giving enough?”, “I don’t want to see you right now”, and “I know nothing’s wrong, but I’m not convinced” are all central lyrics on Hummingbird, and they’re all executed with clear arrangements and deceptively catchy vocal melodies. Gorilla Manor’s greatest moments came in the form of accessible, hooky singles like “Sun Hands” and “Airplanes”, and on Hummingbird, they’ve managed to sharpen their pop focus without compromising the record’s pensive tone. However, Hummingbird’s best parts don’t lie in the areas in which Local Natives have improved, but in the areas where they haven’t yet gone. As good as it is at avoiding the sophomore slump, Hummingbird shows a band with massive amounts of untapped potential. Judging by the successful leap they’ve made between Gorilla Manor and Hummingbird, it’s just as easy to imagine the group making a record that heads in an even more introspective direction as it is to see them returning to their anthemic, sunny roots. There’s obviously still a lot of gas left in the band’s creative tank, and after they finish a year or so of touring behind Hummingbird, it’s going to be exciting to see where they head next.

If Gorilla Manor was their summer record, Hummingbird is its winter counterpart, replacing bright, sun-drenched tones for a crystalline melancholy. It’s clearly a record that was labored over - both on a musical and personal level - but they’re better off for it. Aside from the heavy hand of Aaron Dessner, it’s much harder to play “spot the influence” here than it was on Gorilla Manor, and even the elements of Hummingbird that are reminiscent of their former tourmates reveal a new depth to the group. Coming out on the other side of a particularly excruciating creative period, Local Natives are coming into their own stronger than ever, and diving into creative territory they hadn’t even hinted at before. Hummingbird isn’t perfect, but it’s a better, deeper record than its predecessor, and if the band can sustain this mome

Who Are the Before The Dawn?
Finnish melancholic melodic death metal outfit BEFORE THE DAWN has once again risen from its ashes. June 25, 2011, the concert at Nummirock festival, marked the end of the old line-up; after one month of re-grouping the band returned, playing at Tuska Open Air afterparty July 24, 2011. No rest for the wicked – right afterwards BEFORE THE DAWN hit the studio and in winter 2011 also European stages on their “Rebirth Tour 2011″, together with INSOMNIUM and MYGRAIN.

This year, April 27, 2012 saw the “Rise of the Phoenix”. An appropriate title of the seventh studio album, the second release via Nuclear Blast Records. BEFORE THE DAWN returns after living through a phase of changes and uncertainty – cleansed, renewed and stronger than ever! Leaving the pieces of both the musical and personal past behind, mastermind Tuomas Saukkonen, lead guitarist Juho Räihä and their new companions Pyry Hanski (Bass) and Joonas Kauppinen (Drums) get ready for conquering your ears with the finest blend of northern gloom and harsh melodic death metal, combining the heaviness of melodic death metal, the gloom of dark metal and the frostbitten cold of finnish winters with beautiful melodies and epic hymnody like no other band out there.

Summer 2012 sees the BEFORE THE DAWN Phoenix live on festival stages - check them out!
----- Back in 1999, when Tuomas Saukkonen felt the need to break his routines as a drummer of a local band, his new metal project called BEFORE THE DAWN was born. As soon as the studio was booked, the following demo session started a decade that brought three demos, five full length albums, one DVD and two mini albums. BEFORE THE DAWN also hit both single and album charts in the bands home country Finland many times and played a huge amount of shows in more than 16 countries supporting bands like KATATONIA, MOONSPELL, SWALLOW THE SUN, SCAR SYMMETRY and AMORPHIS.

Soon, the band had gathered a solid fan base all around the globe. Although the first 10 years were characterized by many label and line up changes, 2010 introduced the strongest BTD line-up ever to be seen on stage and in the studio. The same year also took the band to position #1 of the official Finnish charts with their “Decade Of Darkness” -EP and in front of Asian metalheads in China and Japan supporting STRATOVARIUS and TURISAS. Right afterwards BEFORE THE DAWN recorded the “Deathstar Rising” -album in late 2010. It picked up where they left off with their highly successful 2007 effort “Deadlight”, delivering melodies and emotions, brutal riffs and devastating intensity. This album marked another important step in the band’s career: After 6th full lengths, numerous tours and gigs in over 20 countries and several label changes, BEFORE THE DAWN reached a crossroad that lead them under the mighty wings of Nuclear Blast in the end of 2010.

However, turbulent times were just about to begin: the past few years have been difficult for the band in many ways, and in 2011 there were only two ways to go: to bury the band or to continue through big changes in the line up and eventually in the music, too.

By mutual decision, Lars Eikind (bass/clean vocals) and Atte Palokangas (drums) played their last gig with BEFORE THE DAWN at Nummirock festival 2011. The decision with Lars was mainly personal and with Atte purely musical.

The core of the band remained: band leader and the sole songwriter Tuomas Saukkonen and lead guitarist Juho Räihä since the “Deadlight” album – key members of the band’s sound, with Tuomas delivering the music and production and Juho working behind the mixing desk in the studio with recordings and also mixing the two latest releases. (“Decade of Darkness” and “Deathstar Rising”). Their teamwork guarantees top quality in music and production in the future, even with two new band members in a renewed line-up that hit the studio in winter 2011 to record the seventh studio album “Rise Of The Phoenix”, which was released in April 2012. The new style brings the band closer to melodic death metal, and the gothic influences will be part of the band' s history.

Tuomas Saukkonen: “Massive changes in the line-up during 2011 ended an era of great frustration and brought back 110% dedication and professionalism into the band. The newfound energy and motivation steered us into a victorious European tour and made it possible to produce the strongest, fastest, heaviest and definitely the most epic BEFORE THE DAWN album so far!”
