News : DJ Ajax Dead: Adrian Thomas Dies After Being Hit By Truck In Australia
Australian producer Adrian Thomas, better known as DJ Ajax, died in the early morning hours of Feb. 28 after he was hit by a truck in Australia.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported DJ Ajax died on the scene after he ran out onto a Melbourne road and was hit by an oncoming truck shortly before 1 a.m. on Thursday.
Reports are conflicting, but News Limited's news.com.au is reporting that Ajax died on his birthday. Melbourne's DJ Grant Smillie allegedly revealed this tragic news to the Herald Sun. The Huffington Post could not confirm this at the time of publication.
Sydney’s Chinese Laundry nightclub, where Ajax was a resident mixer, was one of the first to break the news of Ajax's death on Facebook, Yahoo! Australia's The Music Hype reported.
"Absolutely heart breaking news about one of our long time former resident Dj's AJAX," reads a message posted to the club's Facebook on Thursday. "Ajax was resident at Chinese Laundry for over 7 years and was a great friend to everyone here & an amazing DJ that was always a crowd favourite[.] You will be sorely missed by everyone who knew you and everyone at Chinese Laundry[.] RIP Buddy[.]"
Ajax was a founding member of the Bang Gang Crew and co-founder of the record label Sweat It Out. The label's biggest success was 2010's worldwide dance hit “We No Speak Americano," by Yolanda B Cool & DCup, according to Billboard. He is credited with bringing electronic dance music (EDM) to the mainstream in Australia.
Sweat It Out released a statement on Ajax's death to the Sydney Morning Herald.
"We are devastated and heartbroken to have lost Adrian and our thoughts are with his family and many, many friends who share our grief at this time," the statement read in part. "He was a hugely talented individual and was highly respected by the local and international dance music community as a pioneer and innovator. Adrian touched so many people and it is impossible to sum up his legacy in words."
An outpouring of support has come from the EDM community following Ajax's tragic passing. He was voted Australia's Top DJ twice by Technics in the Mix, Spinner notes.
If you're a DJ and you ever toured Australia chances are you knew Ajax, he was like the ambassador. Much love to the Banggang homies.
