Videos : Kacey Musgraves : Blowin' Smoke
Scoring three Academy of Country Music nominations before her debut album even came out was flattering, yet a little daunting for Kacey Musgraves. The buzz surrounding the young Texas talent started long before her stellar Same Trailer Different Park hit stores, some of it fueled by infectious songs she'd written for other artists, and some of it thanks to the cleverly daring lyrics of her first radio single, "Merry Go Round." The burning anticipation for her first full set of tunes wasn't lost on Kacey, yet her confidence in the project never wavered. She had made the unapologetic music she wanted to make, as an introduction to country fans. And while she has her critics for advocating pot smoking, one night stands and embracing homosexuality through her music, the lovers far outweigh the naysayers.
"If we are wanting to progress and change as a genre, we shouldn't be scared of taboo subjects. Every other genre gets to sing about them … why can't we?"
