It is typical to see hanging bags of water in markets, taco kiosks and food stalls across Mexico—the rationale being that the refraction of light against the water will confuse and scare away insects, especially flies and other bugs with compound, faceted eyes. This resourceful custom led Mexico City-based designer José de la O to come up with a more elegant solution, utilizing lightweight, borosilicate glass.
Rather than catching flies with unsightly plastic sticky strips, this makes a beautiful (and animal-friendly) display piece that spreads light around your room or backyard on a sunny day. Perfect for BBQs, outdoor dining and anywhere in your home you want to guard from flies and insects.
USE & CARE
Fill with water and hang near food.
While the sphere is meant to dissuade flies from making a beeline for your meal, keep in mind that it will most likely not ward off mosquitoes (which, in addition to sight, also rely on smells and sources of heat).
PRODUCTION & DESIGN
Recognized by international publications as one of Mexico’s top young designers, Jose de la O’s “anti-fly sphere” fuses folk practices with sleek, contemporary design. This glass bug globe was commissioned from a family-run glass blowing practice based in Mexico City. It is made by hand and mouth-blown, with the aid of a glass blowing lathe.
