News : Imagine Dragons Honored To Be Parodied By Yankovic
'We're all big Al fans,' drummer Daniel Platzman tells Billboard.
They say an artist hasn't truly made it until "Weird Al" Yankovic parodies one of their songs. (Okay, people don't say that, but they could.) On "Mandatory Fun," Yankovic's just-released 14th album, he unleashes another batch of homages, including "Handy" (Iggy Azalea's "Fancy"), "Foil" (Lorde's "Royals"), "Word Crimes" (Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines") and "Inactive," a take on the Imagine Dragons megahit "Radioactive."
Billboard reached out to Imagine Dragons drummer Daniel Platzman via email to get his thoughts on "Inactive," the idle iteration of the group's booming single. Not only did he call the parody "a huge honor," but he also revealed his and his bandmates' history with the mock-musician.
"We're all big Al fans," Platzman wrote. "[Bassist] Ben [McKee]'s first three live concerts were Weird Al, and I used to perform his polkas at summer camp with my brother every summer. 'Polka Your Eyes Out' is the Platzman family favorite."
Platzman is hoping to keep the parody partnership going, suggesting that Al record "Damons" next, a play on ID's "Demons." He even has some lyrics in mind: "It's where Matt Damon hides, it's where Matt Damon hides."
