News : Johnny Depp Speaks On Actor Bands
Johnny Depp has criticised actors who use their fame to launch music careers, calling the idea "sickening".
The Pirates Of The Caribbean star is an accomplished guitarist who has played on tracks by Oasis, Bob Dylan and Marilyn Manson. He also collaborated with Ryan Adams on new song 'No Shadow', which came out earlier this month.
However, the actor has insisted he has no intention of ever making music into a second career. "That whole idea for me is a sickening thing, it's always just made me sick," he told reporters at the Berlin premiere of his latest film Mortdecai (via The Guardian,). "I've been very lucky to play on friends' records and it's still going. Music is still part of my life. But you won't be hearing The Johnny Depp Band. That won't ever exist."
Continuing, Depp explained that he hates the idea of people paying to see him play guitar simply because they've enjoyed watching him in movies over the years.
"The kind of luxury now is, anybody with a certain amount of of success, if you have a kind of musical being, you can go out and start a band and capitalise on your work in other areas," he said. "But I hate the idea, 'Come see me play the guitar because you've seen me in 12 movies'. It shouldn't be [that way]. You want the people who are listening to the music to only be interested in the music."
Mordecai, an action comedy in which Depp stars opposite Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor, opens in UK cinemas this Friday (January 23). In September the actor joined Ryan Adams onstage for two nights at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire, playing guitar on a cover of Danzig's 'Mother' and 'Kim' from Adams' 2014 self-titled album.
