News : Yes, Daft Punk Really Are Debuting Their Album In Wee Waa, Australia
Daft Punk are heading Down Under to reveal their hotly anticipated Random Access Memories album, taking over the tiny town of Wee Waa, Australia (population: 2,000) on May 17 to play the album in its entirety.
Yes, according to local paper The Narrabri Courier — and confirmed to MTV News by Daft Punk's publicist — the dynamic duo have selected Wee Waa, which is located in the state of New South Wales in southeastern Australia, as the host for the global premiere of their new album.
They'll debut Random Access Memories at the 79th annual Wee Waa Show, an agricultural fair that also boasts "a pet show, showgirl competition, cross cut saw competition, fireworks and much more." It's not known whether Daft Punk themselves will actually attend the playback, but there is speculation that it will be streamed live, as evidenced by the fact that their label, Sony, recently purchased the domain name DaftPunkWeeWaa.com.
Tickets for the event will be limited to just 4,000, but, as the Courier points out, members of the Wee Waa Show Society will be guaranteed admission. Anyone else will need to purchase tickets through Wee Waa's Crossing Theatre, either in person or (more likely) online. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday.
And, in case you're wondering, no, the folks in Wee Waa can't believe this is happening, either. As Show Society president Brett Dickinson told The Courier:
"It's great for Wee Waa and fantastic for the shire ... we thought getting senator Fiona Nash to open the show was a bit of a coup, but now, our show program has been bolstered tenfold."
