Videos : Taylor Swift : Style

Taylor Swift has released the video for “Style” just in time for Fashion Week, but the song has less to do with fashion and more to do with her love life.

The 1989 track, which has enough synths to sound like it could have been made in 1989, appears to be filled with subtle allusions to her ex-boyfriend Harry Styles, a.k.a. the hot one in One Direction. Swift more-or-less confirmed the Taylor Truther fan theory in her Rolling Stone cover story, saying, “We should have just called it ‘I’m Not Even Sorry.’”

While Swift told Rolling Stone that she and Styles were now friends, the song is filled with sly references to Styles, starting with the title, the lyrics mentioning a boy with long, slicked-back hair and a white T-shirt who can’t “keep his eyes on the road”, and the video where Swift holds up a paper airplane necklace, which is strikingly similar to one of Styles’s favorite accessories.

The video, which Swift had teased on Instagram, is enough to give any ex-boyfriend pause (even if he’s taken Swiftamine.) It features Swift in her trademark red lipstick running through fields and making cat-eyed googly-eyes at model Dominic Sherwood. It’s intimate and sexy and features a shirtless man, staring at Swift in a broken mirror. There’s also a long drive, a deserted beach, a thunderstorm and lots of longing looks. In short, all the trappings of a classic Swift video.
