Who Is Tori Kelly?
When she was 14, Tori Kelly started writing songs in the bedroom of her Southern California home. Within years she began sharing those songs online, and quickly won over Internet audiences with her sweetly soaring vocals, graceful guitar-playing, and knack for blending breezy melodies with boldly heart-on-sleeve lyrics. With her YouTube channel boasting more than 55 million views and almost 700,000 subscribers, the 20-year-old singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist is now at work on her debut album— a passionate pairing of soul and pop that reflects both her lifelong devotion to music and uncommon authenticity as an artist.

“One of the most important things to me as a songwriter is to make music that’s young and fresh, but also soulful and real,” says Kelly. “I want people to feel like they know me once they listen to my songs.” A musical purist who began singing at age three and learned to play drums and guitar by the time she was 16, Kelly forgoes over-the-top production in favor of laying bare her natural musicianship and ingenuity in songwriting. Bolstered by her easy magnetism as a performer, that potent combination helped her 2012 self-released EP Handmade Songs By Tori Kelly to debut at #6 on Soundscan’s New Artist chart and at #9 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. In creating the follow-up to Handmade Songs (which she wrote, produced, and mixed all on her own), Kelly has spent the better half of 2013 in the studio working to elevate her artistry while preserving the spirited simplicity of her sound.

The daughter of two musicians—Dad’s a singer and bassist, Mom plays piano and saxophone—Kelly was raised with a deep love of music. “Music was such a huge part of my life when I was growing up—I feel like it just comes second nature to me,” says Kelly, a Southern California native of Puerto Rican, Jamaican, German, and Irish descent. While she lists artists as eclectic as Lauren Hill, Jill Scott, Jeff Buckley, and Maxwell as key inspirations, Kelly credits her early exposure to gospel singers like Crystal Lewis and J. Moss as a crucial influence on her moving and masterful vocal work. “My parents just told me recently how, when I was younger, they made a point of never telling me to shut up—even when I wouldn’t stop singing at the top of my lungs,” she says. “They always wanted to nurture whatever talent they saw in me.”

Upon taking part in her first singing competition at age six, Kelly decided to dedicate her life to making music. “I never had a plan B,” she confesses. “I just always knew this was what I was meant to do.” Along with working with a coach to strengthen her vocal skills, Kelly also took up drums at age 12 and later moved on to guitar and piano. “I didn’t want to have to rely on anyone else to be my guitar player, so I just learned how to play it myself,” she says. “A family friend showed me a few chords, and after that I just started playing by ear.”

For much of her early- to mid-teen years, Kelly focused on honing her songwriting and experimenting with self-production with the help of her computer’s GarageBand app. During that time she began to gain a globe-spanning following through YouTube, thanks to her faithful posting of inspired covers and original songs that showcased her ethereal vocals and subtly confident guitar-playing. In early 2012, Kelly’s online popularity skyrocketed when a YouTube video of her stripped-down, goosebump-inducing rendition of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You” went viral— to date it’s garnered over 17 million views. “That was a crazy moment for me,” recalls Kelly. “It was just me singing and playing guitar and my friend Angie Girl beatboxing; we never expected it to get that kind of buzz. When that happened, I realized I needed to get more of my own music out into the world.”

Released in May 2012, Handmade Songs featured six tracks performed entirely by Kelly (with the exception of her father’s contributions on bass). “The response to the EP was really cool, because I had no ties to any label—it was just my fans driving the whole thing,” says Kelly. With Handmade Songs quickly climbing to the top ten on the iTunes pop chart, Kelly soon started playing shows at local coffeehouses to build more support for her music. Her very first coffeehouse show was attended by Scooter Braun (manager for artists like Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Carly Rae Jepsen), who has since become the manager of the singer/songwriter.

With the end of 2013 comes the release of Tori’s EP ‘Foreword’ which debuted at #16 on the Top 200 with over 16,000 units sold in the first week. She capped off the week performing lead single and iTunes single of the week, ‘Dear No One’ on the Ellen DeGeneres show.

In the past year alone, Kelly has sold out shows in several major cities (including dates at The Troubadour & The Roxy in Los Angeles, Bowery Ballroom & Gramercy Theatre in New York City, and Bush Hall in London), headlined a nine-city sold-out U.S. tour, and supported Jewel and Ed Sheeran on tour. She has also graced the pages of Elle, Glamour, and Teen Vogue. But for Kelly, the fact that her evolution from Internet sensation to “It girl” took years of effort is a major point of pride. “I’m really happy that none of this happened overnight, that it was a steady process where I learned from every stepping stone and my fans could all be a part of the experience with me,” she says.

Kelly says she has no shortage of inspiration for new songwriting material. “I’m still writing all the time, whether I’m in my room or out in the world and getting ideas down on my phone,” she says. “I can’t go a day without making music.” And when it comes to crafting songs for her debut album, Kelly asserts that her utmost ambition is to deliver honest, emotionally charged music that resonates with those who’ve supported her musical journey over the years. “I’m always very real in my songwriting—I’m not trying to put on a mask or hide behind any kind of gimmick,” she says. “No matter what I’m going to do my own thing. So when people tell me that they relate to my songs, or that something I’ve written really connects with them, that’s just the best feeling in the world.”

Listen To Sky Ferreira : Rancid Girl

Sky Ferreira’s Night Time, My Time was one of our favorite albums of last year, so it’s pretty exciting to find a new track by her today. Thing is though, it’s actually an old track, and one that wasn’t really supposed to see the light of day. The leaked “Rancid Girl” is a stripped-down acoustic song that features co-writing credits from Blake Mills, Jon Brion, and Cass McCombs (the latter two worked on her Ghost EP), and was even met with general positivity from Ferreira on Twitter as you can see:

News : 'Let It Go': A Global Hit In Any Language

By now, parents of young girls may be especially well-versed in the global hit "Let It Go" from Disney's Frozen. However, they may be less familiar with versions sung in one of the 41 other languages recorded for the film's foreign releases.

Tony Award-winning soprano Idina Menzel brings this challenging piece of music to life in the film's original English. The range of the song spans almost three octaves, and it was actually written with Menzel in mind as she is one of the few who could pull it off.

But how does Disney handle such a difficult song when it will be translated for dozens of different countries and performed by dozens of different singers? NPR's Robert Siegel recently put that question to the man responsible for casting women from all over the world to sing the title role of Elsa in their native tongues.

"My jaw dropped when I first heard the song," says Rick Dempsey, senior vice president of creative for Disney Character Voices International. "Idina is so amazing at what she does and to find someone who could have that range, that emotion, in the song and duplicate that 41 different times is a daunting task."

"We held auditions all over the world," Dempsey says.

To show off this multilingual project, Disney put together a video that splices together the international versions of "Let It Go." The video includes French, German, Dutch, Mandarin and many more.

"In a lot of cases I think we fooled some people into thinking that it's Idina in all those languages," Dempsey says. "And that, of course, is the goal, to ensure there is character consistency and the voices are all very similar around the world. ... The good news is that we were able to find talent that were able to pull it off."

Dempsey says that while Disney uses the English version as a sort of blueprint, what it's thinking of primarily is the country being translated for. "We're really trying to do a local interpretation of the film. We understand all our local idioms in various countries to ensure that it's really a local interpretation. At the end of the day, we really want audiences to feel like this film was made for them, in their country, even animated in their country — we want the lip-sync to be that good."

Listen To Shakira : Empire

The power anthem, titled Empire, is a follow-up to and departure from her collab with Rihanna on Can't Remember To Forget You, a tropical hip-thruster with a super steamy accompanying video.

The vid, which features both Shak and RiRi writhing around on a bed in skimpy black leotards, has racked up over 150 million views on YouTube since it was released less than a month ago.

While there is no video yet for Empire, the artwork sees a natural looking Shakira in a strapless dress, with little make-up and her hair in a messy up-do.

Self-titled record Shakira, from which the single is taken, will be the singer's tenth studio album.

The release of the track marks the start of a busy week for the The Voice US judge.

Yesterday Shakira flew to Colombia, her home country, to open a school funded by her Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet) charity, which is named after her album of the same name.

Shakira's one-year-old son Milan accompanied her on the trip, his first visit to the South American state, where he proudly picked up his brand new Colombian passport.

Who Is Manchester Orchestra?
As led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Andy Hull, the maturity of Manchester Orchestra's songwriting belied the fact that the bandmembers were barely legal when their group sprung into existence.

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, the indie rock outfit grew out of songs that Hull had begun writing while attending high school. Encouraged by positive response, he opted for home schooling during his senior year, which afforded him enough time to compose and record in the studio. Friends began collaborating with him over time, and Manchester Orchestra soon solidified into a trio comprised of Hull, bassist Jonathan Corley, and drummer Jeremiah Edmond.

Hull's songwriting noticeably progressed with the addition of his friends, and the band courted its first fans with an EP release. You Brainstorm, I Brainstorm, But Brilliance Needs a Good Editor thus appeared in 2005 through the band's own label, Favorite Gentlemen Recordings. With the EP out, Manchester Orchestra began playing shows around the Southeast and added keyboardist Chris Freeman to the mix. Buzz about the band's music began creating a stir beyond the Atlanta city limits, and the guys were invited to play slots at the South by Southwest and Lollapalooza festivals in 2006 before beginning to work on their full-length album that summer. The resulting I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child was issued by the year's end, offering up a poignant collection of memorable hooks and thoughtful narratives that showcased a similar style to acts like the Weakerthans and Death Cab for Cutie.

Eventually, studio intern turned guitarist Robert McDowell joined the lineup permanently, and as a steady buzz continued to grow -- especially on Internet blogs -- Manchester Orchestra snagged an opening spot on Brand

New's largely sold-out tour in spring 2007. The increased exposure caught the interest of Canvasback Recordings, which reissued the band's debut album that summer. A second EP, Let My Pride Be What's Left Behind, followed in October 2008, and the band remained in the studio during the subsequent months to perfect its sophomore album. Released in 2009, Mean Everything to Nothing found the band working alongside producer Joe Chiccarelli, famous for his work with the Shins and My Morning Jacket. In 2011, the band released its third full-length studio album, Simple Math, a concept album built around Hull's life story. ~ Corey Apar

Listen To St. Vincent : St. Vincent

Who Is St. Vincent?
Annie Erin Clark (born September 28, 1982), better known by her stage name St. Vincent, is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She began her music career as a member of The Polyphonic Spree and was also part of Sufjan Stevens' touring band before forming her own band in 2006. Clark currently resides in Manhattan.

Her debut album was Marry Me, and was followed by Actor (2009). Her third album, Strange Mercy, was released on September 13, 2011. On September 10, 2012, she released a collaborative album with David Byrne titled Love This Giant.

Clark has opened shows for such acts as Television, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Jolie Holland, John Vanderslice, Xiu Xiu, Death Cab for Cutie, Cristina Donà and Grizzly Bear. She worked with Bon Iver on the song "Roslyn", which appeared on the film soundtrack of The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Her track "The Strangers" was sampled by Kid Cudi on the song "MANIAC" for his album Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager along with rapper Cage.

Annie Clark was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She began playing the guitar at the age of 12 and, as a teenager, worked as the tour manager for her uncle's band Tuck & Patti. She grew up in Dallas, Texas, and attended Lake Highlands High School, where she participated in theater and the school's jazz band, and was a classmate of Mark Salling (who later went on to star in the series Glee). Clark graduated from Lake Highlands in 2001.

Clark attended the Berklee College of Music for three years before dropping out. In retrospect, Clark said, "I think that with music school and art school, or school in any form, there has to be some system of grading and measurement. The things they can teach you are quantifiable. While all that is good and has its place, at some point you have to learn all you can and then forget everything that you learned in order to actually start making music." In 2003, during her time at Berklee, she released an EP with fellow students entitled Ratsliveonnoevilstar. While in Berklee, she worked with Heavy Rotation Records where "she revealed a much more private and intimate rendering of 'Count' for Dorm Sessions Vol. 1." Shortly after leaving Berklee, Clark returned home to Texas where she joined The Polyphonic Spree just before their embarking on a European tour. In 2004 she joined Glenn Branca's 100 guitar orchestra for the Queens performance.

Clark left The Polyphonic Spree and joined Sufjan Stevens' touring band in 2006, bringing with her a tour EP entitled Paris is Burning. It contains three tracks, including a cover version of Jackson Browne's "These Days".

In 2006, Clark began recording a studio album, under the stage name St. Vincent. Her stage name is a reference to Saint Vincent's Catholic Medical Center where the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas died in 1953. “It’s the place where poetry comes to die,” she has said. “That’s me.” The name is also a reference to her great-grandmother, whose middle name was St. Vincent. In an interview on The Colbert Report, she said that she "took her moniker from a Nick Cave song, which references the hospital where Dylan Thomas died." The reference is to the line "And Dylan Thomas died drunk in / St. Vincent's hospital" from Cave's song "There She Goes my Beautiful World" off the album Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus.

Clark released her debut album, Marry Me on July 10, 2007 on Beggars Banquet Records. Named after a line from the television show Arrested Development, the album features appearances from drummer Brian Teasley (Man or Astro-man?, The Polyphonic Spree), Mike Garson (David Bowie's longtime pianist), and horn player Louis Schwadron (The Polyphonic Spree).

The album was well received by critics, with Clark being compared to the likes of Kate Bush and David Bowie. Clark was lauded for the album's musical arrangements as well as themes and style; in their review of the album, The AV Club noted: "There's a point where too much happiness turns into madness, and St. Vincent's multi-instrumentalist Annie Clark knows this place well". Pitchfork said "at every turn Marry Me takes the more challenging route of twisting already twisted structures and unusual instrumentation to make them sound perfectly natural and, most importantly, easy to listen to as she overdubs her thrillingly sui generis vision into vibrant life."

The songs featured on Marry Me were largely written when Clark was eighteen and nineteen years old, and, according to Clark, "represented a more idealized version of what life was or what love was or anything in the eyes of someone who hadn't really experienced anything." The album featured its one single, "Paris Is Burning", as well as a music video for "Jesus Saves, I Spend".

In 2008, Clark was nominated for three PLUG Independent Music Awards: New Artist of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, and Music Video of the Year. On March 6, 2008, she won the PLUG Female Artist of the Year award.

In 2008, after returning to New York from a lengthy tour, Clark began working on her second album. Her inspiration reportedly came from several films, including Disney movies: "Well, the truth is that I had come back from a pretty long — you know, about a year-and-a-half of touring, and so my brain was sort of all circuit boards that were a little bit fried", Clark said. "So I started watching films as sort of a way to get back into being human. And then it started to just really inform the entire record."

Clark, who didn't have a studio at the time, began writing the album in her apartment on her computer using GarageBand and MIDI, because she had been getting noise complaints from neighbors. The songs were largely inspired by scenes from various children's films; Clark has stated that she would imagine a soundtrack for certain scenes from films when constructing the music and lyrics, including scenes from Snow White (1937) and The Wizard of Oz (1939).

The second album, entitled Actor, was released by 4AD Records on May 5, 2009. The album was also well received and gained more commercial attention than its predecessor. Spin gave the album eight out of ten stars, noting its "juxtaposition of the cruel and the kind, and here, the baroque arrangements are even more complex and her voice even prettier, with both only underlining the dark currents running through her songs". Entertainment Weekly said the album "plays up the contrasts, with Clark letting her church-choir voice linger on lyrics that hint darkly at themes of violence, sex, and general chaos", and branded the album "a uniquely potent cocktail of sounds and moods."

Actor charted well for an independent release, peaking at #9 on Billboard's Independent Albums Chart, and #5 on the Tastemaker Albums Chart. It peaked at #90 on the Billboard 200. Although the album spawned no singles (except in the UK where "Actor Out Of Work" was issued as a 7" vinyl single), music videos for "Marrow" and "Actor Out of Work" were released, and aired on several music channels. A promotional music video for Laughing With a Mouth of Blood, featuring Portlandia's Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein (then of ThunderAnt), was also filmed.

On January 12, 2011—according to her Twitter account— Clark stated that she was working on her third album, Strange Mercy, a follow up to Actor. In early March, producer John Congleton, who also worked with Clark on Actor, commented that he and Clark were nearly a third of the way through recording the new release. On July 4, Clark stated via Twitter that if enough followers tweeted the hashtag "#strangemercy", she would release a track from the album. On July 22, after the threshold was met, she released "Surgeon" for download and streaming on her official website.

In August 2011, Clark was interviewed and featured on the cover of SPIN magazine. On August 24, 2011, a music video was released for the song "Cruel", and on September 5, the entire album was put up for streaming on NPR Music. On August 25, 2011, debuted Strange Mercy in the Temple of Dendur room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, New York, introducing Toko Yasuda (ex-Enon), Matt Johnson, and Daniel Mintseris to her live band. The album was released on September 13, 2011.

Strange Mercy received widespread acclaim from music critics. The album achieved an overall rating of 8.1/10 at AnyDecentMusic? based on 36 reviews. The album was St. Vincent's highest-charting album yet, peaking at #19 on the US Billboard 200. Regarding the album Annie Clark has stated "I don't think it's the best record I'll ever make, but I think it's a good record." Clark began touring the US and Europe in support of the record in the fall of 2011, and is continuing a worldwide tour throughout 2012.

On November 18, 2013, Clark announced dates for a European tour in 2014 via her website. The following day, Republic Records announced that Clark had signed to their label. Her fourth album, St. Vincent, is scheduled to be released on February 25, 2014. On December 9, Clark released the album's first single, "Birth in Reverse", for digital streaming. The second single, "Digital Witness" was released for digital streaming on January 6.

In 2012, Clark featured on Andrew Bird's album Break It Yourself singing on "Lusitania". On June 14, 2012, "Who", the first single from her collaboration with David Byrne, formerly of Talking Heads, was released. The single comes from their album Love This Giant, which was released on September 11, 2012. On September 18, 2012, Clark participated in the "30 Songs / 30 Days" campaign to support Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, a multi-platform media project inspired by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s best-selling book. Clark also provided guest vocals for the song "What's the Use of Won'drin'" on the album Who Killed Amanda Palmer from Amanda Palmer, formerly of The Dresden Dolls. Clark appeared on the film soundtrack of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2. On May 28, 2013, David Byrne and St. Vincent released Brass Tactics, which includes a previously unreleased Love This Giant bonus track, two remixes, and two live tracks. St. Vincent was the 2013 recipient of the Smithsonian magazine American Ingenuity Awards in Performing Arts.

Clark's vocals will be featured on Swans' upcoming album To Be Kind, which will be released on May 13, 2014.

Clark's music has been noted for its wide array of instruments and complex arrangements, as well as its polysemous lyrics, which have been described as teetering between "happiness and madness". In response to this, Clark has said, "I like when things come out of nowhere and blindside you a little bit. I think any person who gets panic attacks or has an anxiety disorder can understand how things can all of a sudden turn very quickly. I think I'm sublimating that into the music."

In addition to guitar, Clark also plays bass, piano, organ and theremin. Her music also often features violins, cellos, flutes, trumpets, clarinets and other instruments. Her unorthodox musical style has been characterized by critics as a mixture of chamber rock, pop, indie rock, and cabaret jazz.

As of late 2011, her electric guitar pedal board included the following: Korg PitchBlack, DBA Interstellar Overdriver Supreme, ZVex Mastotron Fuzz, Eventide Pitchfactor, Eventide Space, BOSS PS-5 Super Shifter, Moog EP-2 Expression Pedal. All her pedals are controlled by a MasterMind MIDI Foot Controller. She frequently plays a 1967 Harmony H17 Bobkat electric guitar.

St. Vincent Review
St. Vincent has long been a big deal to a small population. Her last solo album, 2011’s Strange Mercy, was heralded album of the year by numerous publications, including this one, and yet at Coachella 2012, she was still stuck inside the Gobi tent playing at the same time as Jeff Mangum and The Shins, leaving one to scratch one’s head and wonder what a lady has to do to be a big deal to more people.

Make a record with David Byrne? Okay, Annie Clark (St. Vincent’s Clark Kent) did that, which really just added to the resume of iconic songwriters she’s worked with, which already boasted Andrew Bird, John Darnielle, Matt Berninger, Justin Vernon, and Sufjan Stevens. But St. Vincent was allowed to play before bigger audiences via the Byrne collaboration than her own project had ever managed, and undoubtably earned a whole new fanbase of Talking Heads faithful that were introduced to her through Love This Giant.

Her self-titled fourth LP seeks to continue this upward momentum, and she has savvily turned to major label imprint Loma Vista to help get more ears on it. More importantly, Clark has risen to the challenge on all levels, crafting a compact and focused album with more pop sensibility than any of her previous releases. While she has penned repeatable gems in the past (like “Actor Out of Work” and “Cruel”), St. Vincent features a consistent parade of tracks that will be comfortable with new heights of popularity. “Rattlesnake” and “Birth in Reverse” could almost be considered fun if not for Clark’s lyrical emphasis, her words so vivid that they render her songs nearly impossible to reconcile away from them. The DFA-indebted electronics on the opener are a reminder that you can’t just tune out St. Vincent’s words and dance. But that’s okay — that’s how we like her.

But do we really know her? Clark’s ascent to popularity hasn’t happened because of a crystal clear understanding of who she is or what she is trying to say. It’s more that we like that she’s trying to express herself, that although she can be hard to understand, she doesn’t stop trying to connect. There is no shortage of interviews with her, yet it was Annie Clark teaching a soccer trick that maybe most captivated sections of her audience. And now, with her self-titled album, we’re probably learning more about what is going on in Clark’s mind than ever before, yet the mystery only increases.

“Severed Crossed Fingers”, the album’s crescendo and most affecting number, contains the line “The truth is ugly, and I feel ugly, too,” sung in a clarity that is rare for a St. Vincent album. You remember how powerfully and beautifully she can sing during this track, and yet you also realize why she keeps this hidden most of the time. The song plays on the organic versus the mechanical, with guts and gears coexisting, technology and humanity finding a way to cohabitate. With all the ways technology takes away from the human experience of old, it never obscures humanity in St. Vincent’s songs. Nothing can. Still her “heart is pulled from her chest,” and still it “changed the words that I knew best.”

The aesthetic of the album, crunchier, fuzzier, more jagged and dangerous, is a tool to further veil the feelings, and on “Birth in Reverse”, it can be viewed as a deliberate distraction. And what isn’t? “I Prefer Your Love” finds her declaring her emotional, very real response to a human being as greater than another tool for obscuring ourselves: religion. “Bring Me Your Loves” is Clark at her most menacing, directly displaying a darker kind of love, the kind that pushes harder than it should, that doesn’t treat the partner like an equal. This time it is her overzealous longing that buffers. Both “Rattlesnake” and “Psychopath” find Clark challenging the notion of crazy for her very normal, very human responses to her environment and interactions.

While emotional unavailability is pervasive here, even when she wants “all of your loves” on “Bring Me Your Loves” or “all of your mind” on “Digital Witness”, that latter song explains the album’s central theme: “If I can’t show it, you can’t see it; what’s the point of doing anything at all? This is not time for confessing.”

So, is St. Vincent going to give up trying to relate to the world? No, of course not, even when it seems pointless. She is doing the opposite, in fact, as she tries to reach more people with stronger songwriting and more legible sentiments. On an album where it is easier than ever to know what is going on in her songs, St. Vincent manages to keep her emotional debt still mostly submerged. “A smile is more than showing teeth,” she argues on “Every Tear Disappears”.

Also to blame for the mystery of St. Vincent is the 21st century, her own damaged psyche, computers, mysticism, and anything else that gets in the way of our relationships and our happiness. And though the lyrics seem to come from a fed-up point of frustration, the key to St. Vincent is that she overcomes the futility of relating to others. She still makes music seeking desperately to be understood and appreciated. Still she loves, and hurts, and laughs, and cries. She never checks out when it is so tempting. On “Rattlesnake”, it makes her feel like the last person on earth. By “Severed Crossed Fingers”, someone has found her, and it makes her realize she will never be alone. What happens in between is the fight, which sonically St. Vincent has always nailed, and here she works wonders, writing with gloss and generosity. Her biggest fans may prefer less direct writing, but it makes St. Vincent her most widely appealing album to date, an infectious work that doesn’t ever feel like a compromise.

Videos : Coldplay : Midnight

Videos : Coldplay : Midnight

Completely unannounced - and quite possibly on the advice of Beyoncé - Coldplay decided to plonk a new track on the internet this afternoon.

Okay, so Beyoncé probably didn't have a hand in it, but once we recovered from the initial shock of there being new Coldplay available for our ears, we had to try and decipher the change in sound the band have seemingly taken.

Their previous album Mylo Xyloto heard them sprinkle pop electronics over their soaring serenades, but the first teaser from album number six strays much further beyond that. It's subdued, murky, twinkling, but definitely not lead single material on first listen.

What hit us the hardest is Chris Martin's robotic vocals. The frontman's tone has become ubiquitous in modern soft rock, but 'Midnight' hears it distorted, with any hint of recognition gently drifting away further into the darkness. It's probably a nod to the track's namesake, primed to make the vocal effect waft around the song so you don't really know which direction it's coming from. You're almost blind to where the track is going to go next.

But most likely that's the point. As much as Coldplay have been branded MOR-rock in some circles, you can't deny the band are not afraid of taking risks. They've filled up stadiums with their gliding piano ballads, they've hinted at revolution with their thumping anthems and they've already got frisky with Rihanna in a music video, so smacking us with yet another turn is what we should have all been expecting.

What Chris Martin and his Auto-Tune will sound like when morning comes and they're out of the woods, we'll have to wait and see, but one thing is for certain: Coldplay never fail to shake up their sound and become even more successful with it. As always, it's just going to take us a little bit of time to get used to it.

What do you think of Coldplay's new song? Leave your comments in the box below:

In 2012, quan came back stronger than ever signing to atlanta based independent label t.I.G (think it’s a game) and releasing his critically acclaimed still goin in mixtape. Videos : Beyoncé : Partition (Explicit Video)

Videos : Beyoncé : Partition (Explicit Video)

Beyonce's "Partition" music video has seen the light of day, and it is drawing mixed reactions from fans and non-fans alike. The superstar announced it on her Facebook page by sharing a photo from the VEVO Facebook account, which featured a screenshot of a silhouette scene from the video. The link went to the music video on the Beyonce YouTube Vevo page.

"Partition" was labeled "explicit video" and it really is. It's an overtly sexy music video, featuring the singer in various scanty costumes and extremely suggestive poses. It's about a bored wife, fantasizing about seducing her husband, played by Beyonce's real life husband, Jay-Z. The song's lyrics were equally naughty, with lines like, "Driver roll up the partition please. I don't need you seeing Yonce on her knees. Took 45 minutes to get all dressed up. We ain't even gonna make it to this club."

Beyonce was said to have been inspired by girls dancing at the Crazy Horse cabaret nightclub in Paris. The venue eventually became the location for the video.

As it turns out, the video was something fans and non-fans of Beyonce would either love or hate. It's drawing mixed reactions online, with people debating on whether the video sends the wrong message or not.

A comment on VEVO flatly said, "The utter lack of modesty gets uncomfortable in parts," while another said, "I wonder what type of message she is sending to her small child. When it gets older it'll ask its mother what and why does she do that? Pretty tragic."

Others thought the contrary. One posted, "Wow she is so sexy. The baddest chick in the game now, no questions asked. Oh, and for the people calling her a whore, you realize she is lusting after her husband?" The rest of the comments were either calling the video "disgusting" and "ridiculous" or simply praising the video for its sexiness.

On the entertainment website Oh No They Didn't, the response was mostly positive. "This song + video really is a career highlight for her," one poster said. "This song still hasn't gotten old for me omg," another commented.

"Partition" is part of the Queen Bey's self-titled "visual" album. The record was released last December.

Listen To Young Money ft. Tyga Nicki Minaj & Lil Wayne : Senile

The Young Money team are about to roll out a new comp of collaborative tracks next month called Young Money: Rise of An Empire, but you can sample the creepy-crawly Tyga, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne team-up "Senile" ahead of time.

The single takes a loose and wobbly tone from the jump, with Tyga whispering his ballin' bars atop a motion sickness-inducing beat of chimes and dying-battery synth swells. Minaj talks about her gift of gab and how she's still running the game ("I got this shit locked tighter than a bear hug"), while Weezy is apparently pumping up a super-soaker chopper midway through a fast-rapped finale.

You can sample the slurred swerve of "Senile" down below.

Don't forget, Young Money: Rise of An Empire drops in full March 11.

Videos : HAIM : If I Could Change Your Mind

Haim‘s debut LP Days Are Gone was universally praised for its refreshing brand of Cali-pop but a breakthrough radio hit has eluded the sisters — at least in this country. That could finally be rectified with “If I Could Change Your Mind”, which is the band’s perkiest pop track yet. So perky that they bust out some choreography for the video!

That’s right. Alana, Este and Danielle show us some wonderfully awkward dance moves in the slick ’80s-inspired visual. It’s somewhat jarring at first — Haim is better known hair whipping and bass face — but it suits the song’s synth-rock sound and, when intercut with footage of the band rocking out, has the desired comedic effect. Watch up top.

Do you like the band’s poptastic detour? Let us know in the comments below.

News : Robin Thicke And Paula Patton 'Mutually' Decide To Split

R&B singer Robin Thicke and actress Paula Patton have separated, representatives for the couple told CNN.

Thicke and Patton, whose son Julian Fuego turns 4 in April, married in 2005. The couple met and began dating as teenagers.

"We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time," the couple said in a joint statement released to the media.

They dismissed rumors swirling last year that their marriage was on the rocks. "I don't know if I would still be alive in some ways if it wasn't for Paula," Thicke told Prestige Hong Kong magazine in September. "She's been my rock, my muse, my inspiration and I love her. The whole way."

They appeared together on the Grammys red carpet last month. He is currently on a national concert tour, while she was most recently seen in the film "About Last Night."

Their reps gave no additional details, such as if a divorce filing is in the works.

Videos : The Dollyrots : Barefoot and Pregnant

Videos : The Dollyrots : Barefoot and Pregnant

Who Is The Dollyrots?
When The Dollyrots entered the studio in late 2013, the punk pair of Kelly Ogden [vocals, bass] and Luis Cabezas [guitar, vocals] brought someone else along for the ride. Ogden was actually pregnant with the couple’s first child River throughout the entire process, making it unlike any recording experience they enjoyed this past decade. As a result, they tapped into something very special for their fifth full-length album, the aptly titled Barefoot And Pregnant [Arrested Youth/Hunnypot Records].

“Well, our goal for 2013 was to make a new record and have a baby,” smiles the frontwoman. “We accomplished both. It’s straightforward punk rock. We didn’t overthink anything, and nobody was looking over our shoulders. The end result is an album that shows where Luis and I are at right now. It’s honest. The album literally grew as my belly grew.”

That said, a raw vitality courses through each of the tracks. With production by the band and John Fields [Jimmy Eat World, Miley Cyrus, Andrew WK], The Dollyrots’ signature spirit shines through in snappy guitar riffs, irresistible hooks, and punked-out percussion courtesy of none other than Stacy Jones. Despite bouts of morning sickness and exhaustion, Ogden would record vocals at home in a closet, capturing an intimacy like never before, while Cabezas took over the engineering duties himself.

“It’s a little rough around the edges in a good way,” he explains. “It’s playful, but it doesn’t sound too computerized or digital. It nods to our influences. We really made it sound as vinyl-y as it could.”

That organic power comes through on the title track and first single. Kicking into a fast beat, it quickly morphs into a sly and sharp anthem. The writing even happened as the duo drove home from a Pixies concert in Los Angeles.

“Kim from The Muffs was on bass, and I was not going to miss that,” laughs Ogden. “After seeing her kill it that night I was inspired to write a funny punk song about being pregnant. The phrase Barefoot And Pregnant has some negative connotations though. It makes you think of fifties housewives who had no option other than to stay home barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. We feel totally the opposite about pregnancy. It’s an F-U to the idea that when you have a kid your life is over and that’s all women are good for. We’re not afraid to flaunt parenthood and still rock.”

And rock they do. “First World Anarchist” emanates a riotous energy as it hilariously examines what Ogden refers to as “the only anarchy most people experience in the States and the UK”, i.e. breaking arcane societal rules like wearing white after Labor Day.

Simultaneously, the band financed the effort through PledgeMusic, receiving overwhelming support from their diehard fan base and keeping everyone updated on each step of the process. Not only did they meet their goal, but five percent of the excess profits will be donated to MusiCares.

“We knew the album couldn’t suck, because people had already pre-ordered it through Pledge before recording began,” Cabezas goes on. “The fans have become family. It’s a direct relationship that’s helped us as artists because we’re not responsible to anyone but them. Even though we weren’t on the road last year, by making an album this way we got closer to everyone who believes in us because we owed them a kick-ass record.”

They’ve built this incredible audience through tireless touring and recording. Forming in 2000 while still teenagers, they’ve become true punk stalwarts. They released their debut Eat My Heart Out in 2004 via Lookout Records followed by 2007′s Because I’m Awesome and 2010′s A Little Messed Up both for Joan Jett’s Blackheart Records. Then, the band dropped their self-titled fourth album on their very own Arrested Youth Records. Along the way, they played the Vans Warped Tour a staggering seven times and saw placements on CSI: NY, Easy A, Raising Hope, Disney’s Brave, Greek, and numerous other films and television shows.

At the end of the day, there’s a heartfelt message at the center of Barefoot And Pregnant. “The fans know everything we do so completely,” says Ogden. “I hope the music inspires them to do whatever they feel passionate about in life. I want them to feel empowered to be themselves because great things can happen when you allow yourself to follow your animal instincts.”

Who Is Hudson Taylor?
Hudson Taylor are two brothers from the outskirts of Dublin who make captivating folk-pop songs. Harry, 21, and Alfie, 19, have amassed a huge underground following and their YouTube videos have had over three million views. They spent a large chunk of 2013 on the road. Their year began supporting Jake Bugg, they played two sets in one day at the Rolling Stones’ show in Hyde Park and their hectic summer also involved stop-offs at Glastonbury, Longtitude, Camp Bestival, Bestival and Cambridge Folk Festival. In November, they were the main support on Kodaline’s UK tour. Over three releases (2012’s Battles and Cinematic Lifestyle EPs and 2013’s Osea EP), Hudson Taylor have demonstrated an effortless knack for ear-worming melodies and gentle anthems. The EPs have sold over 20,000 copies to date. "Our music is raw and folky, like Crosby, Stills & Nash or Simon & Garfunkel," says Harry. They now fix their attention towards completing their debut album, planned for release in 2014. "We want to be able to look back in a few years’ time and be proud of our songs," adds Alfie. Eats : USA : TX : Austin : Franklin's Barbecue

Eats : USA : TX : Austin : Franklin's Barbecue

About Franklin's Barbecue
Aaron Franklin’s parents owned a barbecue stand in his native Bryan, Texas, so it could be said that making good brisket was in his blood. But barbecue runs thick in the veins of every Texan, and when Aaron began experimenting with brisket and a backyard smoker a decade ago, it just so happened that with him it ran thicker than most.

With the encouragement of friends, Aaron and his wife Stacy debuted Franklin BBQ in late 2009 on an East Austin parking lot. From the walk-up window of a travel trailer turned brisket stand, patrons quickly noticed the Franklins were selling the best barbecue around. By spring, the line of admirers snaked around the block, and the press followed. In less than two years, the duo could count contributors from The Washington Post, Texas Monthly, and Cooking Channel among a growing chorus hailing Franklin among America’s BBQ elite—mentioned in the breath as Smitty’s, Kreuz’s, and other stalwart temples to the holy craft of smoked meat that line the Central Texas brisket belt. In the summer of 2010, Bon Appetit hailed Franklin BBQ as the best in America.

Aaron and Stacy quickly outgrew their trailer, and moved their operation to a brick and mortar location in March of 2011. And despite the new digs and every reasonable effort to increase production, Franklin BBQ’s line is as long as ever, and the restaurant has sold out of brisket every day of its existence.

Franklin's Barbecue Review By Holly C.: Columbus, OH
"THE BEST BBQ I've ever had, hands down!

You win, Franklin's. I didn't expect it to be that amazing especially since I've never seen the Chase commercial since I don't have cable. While I was visiting friends, they told me they were taking me there. We waited around 5.5-6 hours from 9am-2:30pm on a Saturday in order to get some of Franklin's deliciousness.

There was someone standing in front of us that heard it would be around 2-2:30pm until we got food, so he had to leave. He mentioned that he teared the first time he tried it. And let me tell you, even though I didn't tear, that was the most amazing bbq I've ever had. One of the best things I've ever tasted. You HAVE to go if you're in Austin with 5-6 hours to spare. It is life changing bbq, and I can never eat normal bbq again. I would wait for it all over again, and I usually hate long lines.

You can rent a chair for $5 from the chair guy, bring your own chairs, and BYOB to drink on their property while waiting in line. We bought breakfast and coffee while standing in line as well.

GET THE FATTY BEEF BRISKET. And the ribs. Those two things literally made me entire trip. Wash it all down with sweet tea, and you'll be in the happiest mood ever. I'm drooling thinking about it. I also dream of Franklin's BBQ...there really is no comparison out there. Do yourself a favor and get there early on the weekends! Aim for 8am!"

Videos : Seether : Weak (Lyric Video)

Videos : Seether : Weak (Lyric Video)

Who Is Seether?
A little more than a decade ago, a hard rocking trio from South Africa, changed its name from Saron Gas to Seether and disembarked for the United States. It was, according to frontman Shaun Morgan, "an emotional decision, by no means easy. Taking that big step was terrifying, but I feel that the decision we made, as tough as it was, was ultimately the correct one."

Talk about an understatement...

Over the course of five albums, Seether -- Morgan, bassist Dale Stewart and drummer John Humphrey -- has proved itself to be one of the rock world's most consistently diverse, unquenchably ambitious bands. And also one of its most successful; Seether has sold millions of albums worldwide, including four gold albums and the platinum Finding Beauty In Negative Places, and launched 11 #1 singles and 17 Top 5 hits across multiple formats at radio, including enduring favorites such as "Broken," "Remedy," "Fine Again," "Fake It", "Rise Above This" "Country Song," "Tonight" and "No Resolution."

Heck, Seether even cranked Wham!'s "Careless Whisper" into a Top 5, platinum hard rock ballad.

SEETHER 2002-2013 certainly backs that up, taking stock of the group's first decade or so of accomplishment. After all, how many bands can really deliver a best-of compilation that spans two discs, with each of the 27 songs -- including rare B-sides, film soundtrack contributions and three eye-opening demos -- as strong as the next, representing a catalog rich in defining, adventurous moments from the first single, "Fine Again," to new offerings "Safe to Say I've Had Enough," "Weak" and a high-octane treatment of Veruca Salt's "Seether," which inspired the group's moniker all those years ago.

"I think our career thus far has far exceeded our expectations in every way," Morgan says. "We've played all around the world and shared stages with bands that we admire and respect. That's far more than we ever thought possible. It's been a constant surprise to have each album be so well received and to see the success of our singles at radio. It's very gratifying and extremely humbling to be able to reach out and touch so many lives. I feel that each new album has led us to challenge ourselves to be creative and write interesting songs that will hopefully stand the test of time, instead of trying to fit into a temporary fad or changing our style to suit a certain radio climate.

"I feel that when you listen to the songs we were writing in 2000 and listen to the songs we write now, that we have progressed quite a lot and we're creating music that's far more interesting and occasionally more challenging than our early stuff. It's important to evolve and grow so that you stay on top of your game and write a stronger album each go around."

The early Seether "liked a lot of different kinds of music" according to Morgan, and the pull of classic rock melodicism and metal and grunge ferocity was certainly heard on 2002's Disclaimer, which started life in South Africa before the band decamped for Los Angeles. The pensive ballad "Fine Again" put Seether on the map -- and onto the soundtracks of the video games Madden 2003 and 1080 Avalanche -- but tracks such as the grooving "Gasoline" and the explosive ebb-and-flow of "Driven Under" established Seether's heavyweight credentials enough to land the band a spot on the 2002 OZZFest tour.

"Broken" was the song that broke things wide open, however. A mellow, acoustic closer to Disclaimer, Seether re-recorded it with fuller instrumentation and tighter dynamics as a duet between Morgan and Evanescence's Amy Lee. The new rendition first appeared on the Punisher soundtrack and hit No. 20 on the Billboard 200, and it was voted the Best Song From a Movie Soundtrack in the 2004 Metal Edge Reader's Choice Awards. Its success also led to the release of Disclaimer II, an expanded edition of the debut album.

The success of "Broken" and "Fine Again" created an odd dilemma as Seether began working on its second album, 2005's Karma & Effect. "Ultimately the impression of the band that was created was a fairly false one," Morgan notes. "By that I mean we played shows and people would come up and know the songs on the radio, but when we played a heavy rock song they didn't know what to do with themselves. I think people expected matchbox twenty, and we weren't anything like that." Consequently on Karma & Effect, Morgan and company set out "to write an album that was heavier and darker. We didn't want to have to deal with misconceptions again." And if there was indeed a darker and more ominous tone to the album -- which debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 -- nobody who heard the skull-rattling riffs of "Remedy," "Truth" and "The Gift" was left with any doubt about just what kind of band Seether was. But Seether could be just as impactful when it quieted down, as evidenced by One Cold Night, a live acoustic CD/DVD set recorded during early 2006 in Philadelphia that included a cover of Pearl Jam's "Immortality."

Seether returned to the studio for 2007's Finding Beauty In Negative Places, another Top 10 entry. Morgan, never one to shy away from personal subject matter, tapped into his forced stint in rehab the previous summer, which he calls "an interesting experience" -- and an inspirational one. Morgan came in with more than 50 songs that were written and considered by Seether and producer Howard Benson. "The songs went through phases," Morgan says. "You could tell -- here's my dark phase, then I got pissed off and started writing super metal riffs, as heavy as I could make it. Then I had my melancholy phase, all acoustic, said stuff. And I ended up coming out at the end and writing stuff that's possibly a little more hopeful. So, yeah, some good came out of it." That whole range can be heard in selections such as "Fake It," "Rise Above This" and "Breakdown," as well as the aforementioned, and very surprising, "Careless Whisper."

"The whole idea of the album was to embrace songwriting, just have an album full of songs," Morgan explains. "The bands I like, like Nirvana or Pearl Jam or Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, are all about songs. It's not all one thing. So we tried to give more of a cross-section of the band." Finding Beauty In Negative Places became one of Seether's most decorated albums, too, with a platinum certification in the U.S. and winning a South African Music Award for Best Rock: English performance and an MTV Africa Music Award for Best Alternative Act.

In its wake, Morgan notes, "we felt like we had to raise the bar every time we write new songs," which made for an exacting and occasionally exasperating making of 2011's Holding onto Strings Better Left to Fray with producer Brendan O'Brien at Nashville' historic Blackbird Studios. "This album took a little time because we wrote more songs and we wrote a little more carefully and certainly took our time with them," Morgan says. That time paid off, though, with another diverse collection that gave Seether its highest-ever Billboard 200 peak -- No. 2 -- in addition to topping the Rock Albums, Alternative Albums and Hard Rock Albums charts. Spawning hits such as "Country Song," "Tonight," "No Resolution" and "Here and Now," Holding onto Strings Better Left to Fray was an unqualified smash that made Seether Billboard`s No. 1 Active Artist and No. 1 Heritage Artist of 2011, while "Country Song" was the year's top Active Rock song in both the U.S. and Canada as well as Mediabase's No. 1 Song of the Year. Seether capped the campaign by giving back, headlining and curating the first Rise Above Fest during September of 2012 in Gilford, N.H., to raise the focus on awareness and prevention of teen suicide in memory of Morgan's brother Eugene Welgemoed, who committed suicide five years prior. After raising more than $20,000 in 2012 -- with help from pals Buckcherry, Puddle of Mudd and Black Stone Cherry as well as others who contributed items for auction -- the Rise Above Fest will return on May 10, 2014 in Bangor, Maine.

While SEETHER 2002-2013 finds the group taking a breath to acknowledge its 10th anniversary, the trio is hardly resting on its laurels -- as evidenced by the set's three brand new, O'Brien-produced tracks. Dale Stewart calls the explosive "Safe to Say I've Had Enough" "one of those songs that didn't require that much effort...It was just kind of everything we thought it needed to be. It was kind of heavy but still had that sort of melodic thing about it. It just worked." John Humphrey, meanwhile, says that "Weak," "fell into place for us rather quickly. I think we ran through it a couple of times in rehearsal and captured the song on the second take. I'm very pleased with the final result."

Then there's the group's forceful rendition of "Seether," which serves multiple purposes, according to Morgan. "We thought it would be a good way to pay homage to (Veruca Salt) and the song that inspired our name," he explains. "And we wanted to represent it in our own way. It's not at all meant to be taken seriously. We figured it was a fun way to celebrate this point in our career, and answer once for all how we got our band name."

Looking into the future, Seether plans to keep its good name intact and its creative process as passionate and perfectionist as it's been for the past 13 years. Stewart says Seether is plans "to go full steam on the new album" for 2014, though Morgan promises the trio's sixth album "is not going to be something we rush into and put out a crappy thing just because there's a deadline." As SEETHER 2002-2013 underscores, quality is and always will be job one for Morgan, Stewart and Humphrey.

"We hope to be around 20 years from now, still writing music and touring, to become a band that spans decades is the ultimate achievement," Morgan says. "Hopefully we have set up a good enough foundation for that goal to be achieved. We're looking forward to the future and are really excited about the music we're writing right now, and hopefully, we can continue to win fans and broaden our influence."
