About Bubby's Pie Company
You might have to wait in line to eat at Bubby's. You might get squeezed in at a table perilously close to another couple, and have to talk loudly to maintain a conversation with your dining companion. But this all pales when you get your Bubby's comfort food. Whether it is the slow-cooked pulled barbecue pork, the lighter-than-air meatloaf, or the buttermilk-fried half-chicken, coupled with such sides as collard greens, sautéed spinach, macaroni and cheese, or baked beans, Bubby's dishes define comfort. Save room for the desserts, especially the homemade pies; one taste of the chocolate peanut-butter pie brought on happy childhood flashbacks. Breakfast is big here and lasts well into the middle of the day. On weekends, though, the wait for brunch can be lengthy. Celebrities need comfort, too, and you might spot one or two at Bubby's. Bubby's also has a branch across the river in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Bubby's Pie Company Review By Mike C. : New York, NY
The food here is so good it's worth waiting for with the huge crowds of hipsters perpetually gathered outside (though I might feel differently if I wasn't lucky enough to score a table for two after only a 15 minute wait).
As always, there was a huge crowd out front when I came in on Saturday for brunch around 12 PM. They have free hot cider outside for you while you wait, which is a nice touch. Since it was freezing out, we waited inside at the bar for our table.
It's a very nice atmosphere in here, and it feels very hip. We were dining right next to Deron Williams from the Brooklyn Nets and his family of what looked like 10 kids, and I hear other celebrities are often spotted here. But the real reason you come here is for the amazing food, and more specifically, the Pancakes and the Pie (make sure to save room for the pie, or if you are like me, and didn't save room, get the pie anyway and just feel a little sick all day from overeating).
We started with the Basket Of Pastries ($10). Since I can't stop eating sweets, this is always one of my favorite items to order when I'm out since it's an excuse to eat sweets as the very first thing of the day. I am often disappointed by these baskets, as a few items are typically cold, or dry, or just not great. That was definitely not the case here, and this was one of the best ones I've ever had. It's hard to choose which of the apple pop tart, the banana bread, the coffee cake and the cinnamon sticky bun was the best as they were all incredibly good.
For entrees, we got the Sauteed Banana Walnut Pancakes ($17) and the Monte Cristo ($17). These were definitely some of the best pancakes I've ever had. They give you a huge stack of these, filled generously with walnuts and topped with some delicious sauteed bananas. The plate itself is pretty bare bones, with some syrup on the table if you need, but it is still worth ordering these as they can get away with not adding anything else to the dish since they are so good (there's also an option to get the Griddle Special, which gets you a smaller amount of pancakes and comes with a meat and eggs of your choice in case you need some meat to cut all that sweet).
The Monte Cristo was a little overwhelming, but also delicious. The cranberry/mustard sauce or whatever that was it comes with was awesome and goes perfect with it. The fries it comes with (or you can choose a side salad if you want to be silly) were also amazing.
At this point, even though we could both barely breathe and were huffing a bit for air, we knew we had to get some pie (c'mon, it's Bubby's PIE Company). This is always a point of contention as my wife loves Apple Pie and I am not the biggest fan, and I always seek to order anything and everything made of peanut butter. So, what choice did we have other than to order both, obviously? The Local Apple Pie ($8) was really really good, and one of the best apple pies I've had (close, but not quite as good as Four & Twenty Blackbirds). But the real winner was the Organic Peanut Butter Chocolate Pie (http://www.yelp.com/biz_…). As someone that eats peanut butter like its his job, trust me when I tell you that this was one of the best peanut butter pies I've had.
I'll definitely be back. There are still a number of pies here on my hit list to try, and the dinner menu also looks excellent. I would just be sure to get here nice and early to avoid the crowds that get really really massive.
