News : Emmett Till's Family Addresses Lil Wayne In Writing
On the unofficial release of Future's "Karate Chop(remix)," Lil Wayne pushed the envelope too far, drawing waves of criticism for a controversial reference to Emmett Till. The provocative verse almost immediately got a response from Till's cousin Airickca Gordon-Taylor, who even penned an open letter to Weezy this week, airing out her concerns.
In the letter via VIBE she wrote, “When you spit lyrics like, 'Beat that p----y up like Emmett Till,' not only are you destroying the preservation and legacy of Emmett Till’s memory and name, but the impact of his murder in black history along with degradation of women.” She continued on, appealing to Lil’ Wayne not as a celebrity, but as a father himself saying, “ How would you feel if your child was beaten beyond recognition, body mutilated and disfigured, tortured for hours, unnecessarily shot after being BEATEN TO DEATH...”
However, Ms. Gordon-Taylor concluded her letter on an uplifting note adding, “Together we can ignite a modern day movement. You would be a great asset to the struggle.” As she told the Chicago Sun-Times on Wednesday, it is neither her nor the foundation’s desire to villainize or defame the New Orleans born rapper. We just want Emmett's name removed from that song,” she said.
Though Weezy has yet to comment on the controversy, Future spoke out on his behalf. Friday night, he told MTV News, "The record it was done from a good place, good art, he ain't have no bad intentions when he was thinking about it like that. It was used in a different way, but I understand it," he said. "So at the end of the day we're gonna move on from it and find a way to build."
