Movement Electronic Music Festival Review By Bruno Postigo : iSpY
It’s problematic to describe Movement (DEMF) because it’s so out of the ordinary. People put on facades and embark on an electronic journey in which the sound waves drive their bodies for three days of mayhem. Movement is a place where people won’t judge you and being out of the ordinary is a reason for celebration. This also describes electronic music, which is as diverse as the people that listen to it. The festival manages to cater as many sub-genres of electronica as possible—you will find house, techno, dubstep, hip hop, grime, drum and bass, etc.
Movement started around 11 years ago as a free event. The increasing price of maintaining it forced it to become a paid event, but this didn’t stop the festival from going strong—and the entrance fee allowed bigger names to be involved.
The festival is located in the heart of Detroit in Hart plaza, where you can feel the ground rumble with the power of the music as you approach. Upon entering the festival, you will find a deviant world—girls wearing furry go-go boots with neon tops and skirts, guys wearing gas masks, teenagers dancing to the beat with glowsticks, sinister clowns rocking to the music and your everyday Joe intrigued by the masses.
This year’s festival had 34,820 people attending on the first day and over 99,282 throughout the three day weekend. The headliners were particularly impressive— among them were Fatboy Slim, Carl Craig, Flying Lotus, Felix da Housecat, Goldie, Little Dragon, Skrillex and over 60 more artists.
Paxahau does an amazing job organizing the event as everything is sharply calculated, which allows the festival to run smoothly. Visitors find themselves exploring the different stages, where someone is always playing. The introduction of their volunteer program even allows people to enjoy the festival free of charge in exchange of a set amount of working hours.
The weather didn’t stop people from coming to the festival. On Saturday night, a massive downpour drenched the crowd, but people didn’t seem to care about the rain. The music was far too powerful to keep fans away. Paxahau hired particularly talented sound and video engineers that were key to the festival’s success.
As a photographer with backstage access, I gained a unique perspective that not many people get to experience. On that note, while artists might be public figures, they’re still human beings that give their best at every show. I felt honored to be among some of my idols such as Flying Lotus and Goldie and being allowed to photograph them was especially cool.
The festival truly comes to life once night sets in, as the light shows create a wonderful mood impossible to replicate in the daytime. The glow sticks start to create ghostly figures and the lights drive the audience crazy. Fatboy Slim took my vote as the best performer of the event. His stage presence was that of a demi-god, forcing the masses to move uncontrollably to his music. Skrillex comes as a close second (who opened for Deadmau5 last year at the Convo) and has been gathering international strength quickly. His stage energy could not be rivaled by anyone at the event. With so many great performers at this year’s festival, it’s easy to wonder how Movement 2012 will try to outperform this year’s festival.
