The National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA), the only Association comprised of NBA, ABA and Harlem Globetrotters alumni, will host more than 150 NBA Legends in Houston February 13-17 for NBA All-Star 2013. The NBRPA will utilize All-Star Weekend as a vehicle to recognize the careers of its members, celebrate Black History Month and give back to the community. In addition, the NBRPA will jointly announce an extension and expansion of its historic partnership with the NBA alongside Commissioner David Stern in a media announcement held at NBA Jam Session on February 14.“The NBRPA and its members are proud and honored to be an integral part of NBA All-Star 2013 in Houston February 14-17,” said Arnie. D. Fielkow, President & Chief Executive Officer for the NBRPA. “Working in conjunction with the NBA and our local Houston NBRPA Chapter, we have planned a number of star-studded, fun and philanthropic events for our members and the community. On behalf of the NBRPA’s Board of Directors, I would like to thank our members, sponsors and supporters for making such an impactful and fun agenda possible.”All-Star festivities for the NBRPA will begin on February 13, as former University of Houston stars Greg “Cadillac” Anderson, Otis Birdsong, Dwight Davis, Elvin Hayes and Ollie Taylor return to their alma mater to be honored at Hofheinz Pavilion when the hometown Cougars take on the UTEP Miners. Birdsong, Vice Chairman of the NBRPA Board of Directors, said he is excited to come “home” to Houston.
“The NBRPA is excited to celebrate All-Star Weekend in Houston – one of the very best basketball cities in the country,” said Birdsong, who was named 1970s Player of the Decade for the old Southwest Conference after an All-American career at UH. “The NBRPA has deep ties to Houston – we have a strong Houston Chapter and many members are originally from or now living in the area – and we plan to support the community throughout the All-Star Weekend.”
