Two things happened in August, 1983.  Hurricane Alicia swept into town and Rich’s Houston opened it’s doors.  It was then that Houston experienced the only, technologically advanced, mega nightclub in it’s history, and patrons began to partake in what has become over 29 years of leading edge parties, music and dance.

Originally, the building was erected in 1949 and was home to The Richland Fan Company (origination of the name, Rich’s).  As air conditioning became common place in Houston, the Company fell on hard times and closed the Company and the building.  You can find our building in the book “Houston 175, A Pictorial Celebration of Houston’s 175-Year History”.

The building was vacant till the late 70’s, and in in 1977 the building was campaign headquarters for Katherine Whitmire.   In 1977, with limited funds but a substantial volunteer base, she was elected Houston’s first woman City Controller and was re-elected for a second term in 1979.   She then ran for Mayor.  Kathy Whitmire was elected Mayor of Houston and served our Great City from 1981 to 1991.   As one of Houston’s greatest Mayors, diversifying our economy, she had vision for the future and we were proud to be part of that.

The building was then restructured to provide Houston with the ultimate, most theatrically architected, nightclub facility in the Country.  Just a couple of years after opening, it was dubbed “The Studio 54 OfThe South”!  To this day, Rich’s continues to be the most technically advanced nightclub in the City, setting the bar for entertainment levels in Houston.  Many try to imitate our tradition, but simply cannot come up with anything close.  Hosting some of the world’s greatest singers, DJ’s, local artists, Rich’s will continue to provide Houston with the greatest parties available.  Period.
