The Camellia Grill
About The Camellia Grill
The legendary staff at this “classic diner” in Riverbend dishes up “down-home” American “comfort food” like “huge”, “delicious” omelets (“the hen would be proud”), “hard-to-beat” cheeseburgers chased “with a chocolate freeze” (“word!”) and “pecan pie heated on the grill”, all with a “fist bump”, constant “banter” and “a lot of attitude”; no matter the hour, “there’s always a long line” to claim a stool at the counter where “couples in tuxes and gowns, students in Tulane sweatshirts and families in jeans” all mingle.
The Camellia Grill Review By Jessica H : Los Angeles, CA
I wish I remembered to check in here so I never forget that I was here.. took a streetcar down St. Charles from CBD which is an adventure on its own. If you're a tourist it's worth it to ride the streetcar once so you can look at all the surrounding architecture. but we're not here for that.. we're here for the food
My friends and I visited NOLA and camellia grill was our last stop before heading back to the airport.. Not all of us made it out but the others definitely missed out.
My friend and I ordered the waffles with sausage (YUM) and the manhattan omelet (even more YUMs).. the omelet is infused with hash browns.. the hash browns alone are delicious as well. Our third friend ordered the standard eggs, bacon, and hash brown meal.. while we were waiting for our food we saw the guests next to us order cheeseburger and onion rings.. that's when my friend and I decided we NEEDED to get that as well.. The cheeseburger didn't even need to come dressed.. the patty, cheese, and delicious bread is all that was needed..
There's nothing negative to say about the food here.. especially given by the fact that we doubled our order just by looking around... and we ate it all...
Can't have a complete meal from this place without their pecan pie.. before they serve the pie to you they grill it for a few moments and of course you HAVE to get it a la mode with the vanilla ice cream on top.. its so delicious.. the bottom portion is nice in crispy while the center is still soft (perfect combo of textures)
I'm drooling.
The Avenue Pub
About The Avenue Pub
The Avenue Pub is located in the historic Lower Garden District of New Orleans – a short streetcar ride from the Central Business District and the French Quarter. Though we have no records as to the exact date the Pub was originally built (it may have been a shop originally with the owner residing upstairs), it’s architecture and construction place it somewhere about 1845. Many of the original features have been retained including the tin ceiling in the main bar and the classic fireplaces on the second floor. Of course, like all classic New Orleans buildings, it has large shuttered windows that occasionally pass for doors – and one of the largest balconies overlooking St. Charles Avenue; perfect for parade watching during Mardi Gras!
The Garden District area was originally developed between 1832 to 1900. It may be one of the best preserved collection of historic southern mansions in the United States. The 19th century origins of the Garden District illustrate wealthy newcomers building opulent structures based upon the prosperity of New Orleans in that era. (National Trust, 2006).
This whole area was once a number of plantations. It was sold off in parcels to mainly wealthy Americans who did not want to live in the French Quarter with the Creoles. The district was laid out by New Orleans architect, planner and surveyor Barthelemy Lafon (Lafon was also a Pyrate & associate of Jean & Pierre Lafitte – many of his ancestors still live in Barataria).
Originally the area was developed with only a couple of houses per block, each surrounded by a large garden, giving the district its name. In the late 19th century some of these large lots were subdivided as Uptown New Orleans became more urban. This has produced a pattern for much of the neighborhood of any given block having a couple of early 19th century mansions surrounded by “gingerbread” decorated late Victorian houses. Thus the “Garden District” is known for its architecture more than gardens per se.
A slightly larger district (one block further west to Louisiana, one block farther north to Carondelet and three blocks farther east to Josephine) was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1974.
The Avenue Pub Review By Paul D. : Houston, TX
One of the best bars I have been to anywhere.. An ultra chill place that I can relax and enjoy the great sounds in the Garden District. Always one of my first stops in New Orleans. Order food from the right bar, only certain beers are served at the balcony, Sometimes they have BBQ from a neighboring spot, but their food is always great pub grub. Two main areas, a downstairs that allows smoking, and upstairs/balcony that is smoke free. I cannot get enough of the old world French/Cajun look and feel of the place. Just perfect for a laid back and enjoyable session. I can people watch and sip on great beer all day on the balcony.
The service is great, everyone is very Knowledgeable and enthusiastic about what they have to offer. They know beer and how to serve it to a T. The food I had was very good. Smoked sausage, pulled pork, and pasta salad. Everything was great, along with their already great menu.
The selection is awesome. A handful of LA locals, but none of those are any good outside of NOLA. They do a cask Friday which is great. Happened to be Saint Arnold from Houston. The rest of the tap list ranges from Green Flash, Saint Somewhere, Dieu du Ciel, and Prof Fritz 1809. All are in good to great condition. Believe it or not the bottle list is even more impressive. Cantillon, JW Lees, Drie Fonteinen, Evil Twin, etc, etc.
One of the best places to have a beer in the Country, period. Just awesome, and I can't recommend this place enough.
Mimi's In the Marigny
About Mimi's In the Marigny
It started out feeling a bit like an L.A. club impresario's idea of a Marigny bar: clean, perfectly lit, not out of place in a New York hipster hotel that wanted a New Orleans-themed club. But it's gained some grit, the initial trendiness has mellowed, and now it's perhaps the veritable beating heart of the Marigny area. Still a step up from our beloved but shabbier New Orleans clubs, with tapas, tunes, and late, late hours, but with a welcoming, largely local crowd and a serious dance scene upstairs. When legendary DJ Soul Sister spins rare soul on Saturday and Sunday nights, everyone gets their groove on.
Mimi's In the Marigny Review By Clarice O. : Concord, CA
I went here for a night of dancing. My BFF in NOLA said that my life would never be complete until I danced the night away at Mimi's. A night of dancing, you say?!? Count me in! My BFF may be spot on on his pronouncement or he may be spectacularly amiss. I don't care. The magic word is "DANCING" (well, and that he assured me Mimi's is not that far from Frenchmen so I can easily head there if I didn't like the scene). And happily, my BFF was so right. That night was one of the most fun nights I have ever had in a while.
We went on a Saturday night, which is otherwise known as "Disco Night" with DJ Soul Sister. We went to the second floor and it was packed with people just having a great time. (One thing I notice in New Orleans is that people actually dance in clubs instead of just hanging around trying to look pretty while making goo goo eyes at the cutie by the bar like in Las Vegas or San Francisco. Also, by dancing, they don't mean just grinding against your derriere and calling that "dancing.") The music was indeed disco and it was just really really FUN!
Within a space of an hour, it felt like I was dancing with half of the people in the club (who felt like they had all become my friends by then). The best and my most favorite part of the evening? The DJ asked me for my name and number and offered me a job as a backup dancer! (Although that offer may speak more for the DJ's level of inebriation than my dance skillz...) I can't wait to go back to Mimi's for more fun nights!

In Spike Lee’s movie “Girl 6,” the lead character (a phone sex operator) used a number instead of her name to remain anonymous. DJ GIRL 6, on the other hand, is far from anonymous, adopting the moniker because the movie reminded her of the harsh realities behind going “all in” to pursue your dreams. Harsh realities aside, DJ GIRL 6 has fought her way to the cutting edge of DJ techniques and technology, blazing trails for others to follow for just over ten years now.
GIRL 6 is a pioneer in the Video DJ movement, not just as a female, but as one of the first commercial video remixers on the scene, period. Her clever and thought-provoking use of wordplay and movie clips won her one of the first video remixer spots on www.crooklynclan.net where she remains the only female to date. She is also the only nationally-known acclaimed female Video DJ. Truly, GIRL 6 has become one of the premiere DJs, VJs, and remixers on the planet, an exclusive club she fought and worked hard to help create.
The driving force behind Miss 6’s trailblazing is simple – she’s damn good! The simple fact is both her audio and video alike are a manifestation of a lifetime of experience. GIRL 6 has been flirting with DJing her entire life, and it's rather obvious that DJing likes what it sees...
