Videos : Kacey Musgraves : Follow Your Arrow

Kacey Musgraves hit the desert to film the video for her single ‘Follow Your Arrow.’ The song has been controversial in the country music business, but Musgraves kept the video laid back and fun.

The video starts when Musgraves finds an arrow sticking out of a desert road. She’s quickly joined by her well-dressed (and matching!) band as the song kicks in. The video is filled with shots of Musgraves dancing and a few rolls of the eyes during the line “When the straight and narrow gets a little too straight / Roll up a joint, or don’t.”

Despite the carefree feel of the song and video, shooting wasn’t completely seamless. Musgraves got a little too close to one of her prickly plant costars and got a decent sized cut, which she posted to her Instagram feed.

The “Roll up a joint, or don’t” lyric, combined with a few others about sex, religion and gay relationships, make the single unique in the country genre — and it’s caused a bit of controversy.

“I know a lot of people don’t really agree with those things, especially in the South. But there’s actually a lot less criticism towards that song than I imagined,” Musgraves tells The Boot. “More than anything, even if they don’t agree with the girls kissing girls thing or even the drug reference. I would hope that they would agree that no matter what we all should be able to love who we want to love and live how we want to live.”

Musgraves co-wrote the song with Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally. In an interview with The Boot, Clark echoed Musgraves’ feelings on the tune, saying that the risk has been worth it.

“Well, you know, with great risk comes great reward,” she says. “I’m just thrilled that her label and her would take a chance like that. And I think no matter what, that’s a win. I think people love that song, and I’m sure there will be a lot of stations that won’t play it, but there will also be stations that will, and it moves the needle.”
