Who Are The Hics?
"It's sure as hell intriguing" NME
"Blissful...we'll be hearing an awful lot more about them in the near future " Line of Best Fit
"The Hics' soulful, downbeat electronica showcases a wisdom beyond their years...validates the hype surrounding them" Notion "A big step-up...the six-piece finding their voice in nu-soul " This is Fake DIY
The Hics’ warm and subtle fusion of electronic, hip-hop and jazz production stems in part from their unusual upbringing. Four of the band’s six members met at the celebrated, state-funded special music course at Pimlico School; a classical/jazz curriculum that cites Dave Okumu and Tom Herbert (The Invisible) as tutors, and the likes of Roots Manuva and dubstep duo Nero as alumni. Wanting a male/female duet from the start, Sam Evans (19) founded the band with fellow drummer Jacob Welsh, before recruiting his vocal counterpart Roxana Dayette (22) from the student corridors. They have since grown into a six-strong, multi-instrumentalist collective, writing and largely producing everything themselves; and as equipped with keys and laptops as they are the saxophone or flute.
The ‘Tangle’ EP introduces The Hics’ smooth and unique blend of beats, soul and classical influences. Early blog favourites ‘Lines’ and ‘Cold Air’ are here for the first time, awash with the yearning co-vocals of Sam and Roxana. Lead track ‘Tangle’ is just as atmospheric, with influences ranging from James Blake to Little Dragon and Robert Glasper. Rounding off with ‘Russian Dolls’, The Hics’ debut EP points to a maturity surpassing their years – and both a testament to, and reaction against, their formal school days.
Having played their first gig of the year to a rammed-out Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, The Hics were runners-up for Best Breakthrough Act at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards (without even releasing a single) and have already been picked up by the prestigious KCRW in the States
