About 9:30
Nightclub 9:30 (originally known and still commonly referred to as the 9:30 Club) is a nightclub and concert venue in Washington, D.C.. The club originally opened in 1980 at 930 F St. NW in downtown Washington (hence the name). Co-owned by Rich Heinecke and Seth Hurwitz, it later moved to its current location at 815 V Street NW, anchoring the eastern end of the U Street Corridor.
The club has a capacity of 1200 people and is a standing-only venue. It won the Top Club awards at the 2007 through 2012 Billboard Touring Awards, except in 2008, when the award was not presented.
Nightclub 9:30 has been awarded "Nightclub of the Year" honors four times by Pollstar, the concert industry trade journal. And for most of that time, it has also been Pollstar's top ticket-selling club. In 2004, the 9:30 sold 236,112 tickets.
Rolling Stone Magazine online rated the club the #1 Big Room in America. Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump said, "It's got so much character, you wonder if the locals know how lucky they are."
9:30 Review By David M.: Ellicott City, MD
"A downtown concert venue, walking distance from the U street stop - grungy enough to be edgy, but in a nice enough area to be safe.
I ended up here for New Years to see Clutch ($55 a ticket - included champagne toast). The set up was really cool. They have two bars downstairs and a large floor space. Being a bit older (30s)- and not really into Clutch - we headed up the stairs to the balcony. There's another bar there, and a great view of the floor. Clutch came on, and the mosh pit started. I thought the staff did a good job at keeping it safe without going overboard (grabbing a guy who was crowd surfing - but not kicking him out, forming a "wall" when a few moshers got out of control, but letting them have fun). Even so - it looked a bit rough down there, so I don't think I'd want to wander into it. That was more the band than the venue- so just pay attention to who you're seeing and plan accordingly.
Sound quality - over all, the acoustics are pretty good. For Clutch, the sound was awesome, but the opening bands it was like the sound guy was on lunch. Random non-intentional feed back, bad balancing. Just Meh.
Drinks - Awesome selection of beer for a concert venue. The downside is, its like $8 a beer, and not a large one at that - and doesn't matter what you get (so go high end). Mixed drinks were also about the same price.... so that's a better deal, and they were pouring heavy. Staff was friendly, and it blows my mind they can figure out your order without being able to hear you.
New Years Celebration - Pretty cool place to ring in the new years. They dropped tons of balloons - but the free champagne idea was a kind of hectic. They didn't give them out until a few minutes before new years - so you had to choose between being at the bar or with your date... in the end, I got both the champagne and made it back, so no complaints there."
