The Ginger Man Pub
The Austin Ginger Man was the third member of the family, and has been serving fine beers since 1994 in the original location on 4th Street. Due to changing commercial interests in the downtown area, we moved to our current location just a fraction of a block away. The not-really-old but not-really-new pub has some new things, and a lot of the old pub in it. Like the other Ginger Man pubs, there is an outside beer garden perfect for enjoying a sunny afternoon. We think we’ve kept the comfortable feel of the old pub, and, of course, the beer is still the most important thing here. Visit us, your neighborhood pub, ask the bartenders about a particular beer, play a friendly game of darts or sit back and enjoy a pint with your fellow patrons.
The Ginger Man Pub Review By Jack N.: Austin, TX
"I've been to GM countless times, and can't remember ever being disappointed, but this review is for this year's SXSW festival week..
I'd been out of town working all week. It's a somewhat rainy Saturday and we are looking for something fun to do downtown. Some friends tell us they're heading to Gingerman and we should meet them, so that's our plan.
Walk in, find them in the back, and start having a nice visit. My buddy Tim suddenly points my attention to my right, and not ten feet away is Mike Mills of REM. WTF? I am then informed that the band coming up is The Baseball Project, with Mills and Peter Buck of REM.
This is exactly why I love SXSW - the sheer serendippity of walking into a great bar like the Gingerman, drinking quality beer served by professionals, and hearing great music in an intimate setting.
The last time I saw REM live it was at the old Southpark Meadows, they were the headliner act with Natalie Merchant and Radiohead as their openers. Now I'm watching Mike Mills playing bass and singing about 20 feet away! (Peter Buck was not there this weekend, alas). And doing it outside on the very comfortable bier garden of Gingerman.
They were serving Dogfish Head Namaste outside which suited me fine, but if you want real selection head to the bar. In almost 20 years of living in Austin, I've never run out of interesting beers to try at the GMan, and I'm betting you won't either.
Let's hope the Gingerman survives the boom in Austin, it's truly an institution."
