There is quite a lot going on in that title, so let us break this down for you. Earlier this year, Jeremih released a song called, “Planes,” featuring J. Cole. Chance the Rapper and his band, the Social Experiment, plus prodigal Norwegian producer Lido, teamed up to remix the song, switching out J. Cole’s verse for one from Chance. Lido gives the instrumentals a recomposition, alternating his signature sound with that of the original production.
There is a f*ck ton going on, not just in the title, but in this remix. And this is a true remix, even in the hip hop sense. Rappers spitting on the instrumentals of another track? That’s the type of classic hip hop shit we like. Chance is here, there, and everywhere these days, probably one of the causes of his current exhaustive state. The rapper has had to cancel tour dates for the second time in his career, due to exhaustion. We hope he feels better soon. Sending prayer hand emojis for a rapid recovery, so that he can get back to wowing fans with his intoxicating energy, some of which he brings to this remix. Chance’s verse romances this track, taking it from sex in an airplane bathroom to chocolate covered strawberries, champagne, and a bed of roses. His raps are super sweet as usual, and Lido and the band back up his bars with fresh instrumentals that flow like…
This isn’t the first time Lido has teamed up with Chance and his crew. This young producer’s composition skills are so on point, they are out of this world. Directly transported via some top secret NASA warp drive from the distant future, which is quite obviously where Lido resides. His genius stays musically futuristic, with a signature sound coined long before any genre started using the word future in its hashtag. In this industry, it is nearly inconceivable to encounter an individual that is able to read, write, and play music, let alone compose notes and meticulously place them on a sheet and intertwine them into the remix of a track. Lido is just that dude.
There is a whole lot of madness going on here, which is as to be expected of Chance as of late. He hasn’t embarked on a solo project for quite some time, and it doesn’t look like he will be anytime soon. His forthcoming album, Surf, is a collaboration with The Social Experiment, a group that has become so much more than simply his band.
Chance’s projects have become their own experiment, that demolish conventions and break down industrial barriers of genre that are stifling music’s purpose, shattering their bricks to rubble. It sounds crazy, but it is this caliber of madness that breeds the most unrivaled works of art.
This track’s plethora of elements, all it has got going on, combine to give us one sound; nothing short of sexy, concurrent fluidity.
