The new Ford Shelby GT350 needs to pull aside because it has just been surpassed by the Shelby GT350R, “the most race-ready road-legal Mustang ever built.” Depending on who you ask, the GT350R was the second most impressive vehicle Ford unveiled at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, with the first being the new GT supercar.

Jumping straight to power, the GT350R packs the most powerful naturally-aspirated engine the American carmaker has ever manufactured — a 5.2L V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft that produces 500 horsepower and more than 400 lb-ft. (542 NM) of torque. A six-speed manual transmission and a Torsen limited-slip differential hastily get all that power to the rear wheels.

Upgraded brakes and a thoroughly re-tuned suspension help deliver superior handling.

To trim some fat, the GT350R does away with many of the creature comforts found in the regular GT350, with Ford’s engineers removing the air conditioning system, stereo, rear seats, trunk floorboard, exhaust resonator, backup camera, and tire-repair kit to reduce weight by 130 pounds (59 kg). Constructing the 19-inch wheels out of carbon fiber instead of aluminum alone shaved off 52 pounds.

Buyers that can’t live without those stripped-out features can opt to have their GT350R equipped with an Electronics Package that adds back the stereo, dual zone air conditioner and more.

Visually, the Shelby GT350R sets itself apart from the regular GT350 with a larger front splitter and rear wing, red brake calipers, red pin striping at the edges of the optional racing stripes and — of course — GT350R badging. The track-focused interior boasts a D-shaped steering wheel, two Recaro bucket seats, and a metal plaque on the right side of the dashboard.

Clearly developed to go up against the Chevrolet Camaro Z28, the new Ford Shelby GT350R is not to be messed with and is just one of 12 new Ford Performance vehicles — new GT and Ford F-150 raptor included — that will be released by 2020.
