Clubs : UK : Manchester : Sankeys

About Sankeys
Located on Radium Street, Sankeys is set slightly out of the centre of Manchester in a maze of warehouses and badly lit streets. Don’t let this put you off though, think of it more as an adventure on your way to the club. Or, if you are sorely lacking in adventurous spirit as many often are in the Manchester rain, then get a taxi (this is also recommended if you don’t know the way, as it is practically guaranteed that you will get lost). Once at the club you will probably be met by a queue, but these are mainly fast moving and well managed.

Recently renovated, inside Sankeys there is a bar lit with soft red lighting and past this a small seating area which leads through to the main dance floor. It is not the largest, and can get quite crammed, but this just adds to the hyped up feeling of the night. There are a couple of raised platforms where you can observe the scene unfolding but this view is normally obscured by the masses of dry ice that's pumped onto the dance floor. If you carry on through the main room a handy, huge, illuminated sign points the way to the outdoor smoking terrace. Before you get to the terrace you have to walk through a room that's half indoors, half outdoors (the exposed to the elements portion presumbably adding the chill factor to the chill out area) that's decorated with sofas and an extremely large screen playing old movies (original star wars and the like). A good place if you want to have a chat without losing your voice. The actual smoking area floods extremely easily in the rain, leaving even the most hardcore smokers huddled under a couple of large umbrellas, braving all weather for their nicotine and smirting fix.

Sankeys review By Trisha B. : Manchester, UK
So those times that you see the loud painted bus doing rounds from fallowfiled to wilmslow to the it destination, with the number '69' flashing on it, it's the Sankey's pick up bus! Its noisy, crazy and everything that you need at the start of a night!

The club is of course on a far end from most university party places and the pick up bus serves good! As you reach the club, most of it is blurred since alcohol has reached your guts from when the ride has begun. The club is red and garishly gorgeous from inside. The bathroom is probably the tiniest part about the place and the queues are never ending!

What makes this place so perpetually popular and why are their tickets always sold out? The Music! The house/electro/pop mix that they showcase and the dj's that drive this place are more than a riot! The night never ends until 5am and the bus safely takes you to our start point!

Its one helluva night at Sankeys and be sure to wear comfortable shoes because believe me, you'll be dancing away the night!

There's always quite a diverse crowd in attendance, it is one of the few Manchester clubs that still manages to pull in a good mixture of age ranges. However, Sankeys has changed a lot from the old days and no longer has the pure clubbing vibe it used to. This is partly due to other clubs opening and doing the same thing but in a newer, fresher way. That said, when you get to the dance floor and the DJ is pumping out the tunes you don’t feel like the crowd could be going for it much more. People here know their music and have come to have a good time. The girls do have a touch of the fake tan about them, but this does depend on the style of music on the night.

The bar staff are pretty decent, totally attitude-free and always willing to help. The security are a bit of a mystery as some bouncers wander around in jumpers with ‘property monitor’ emblazoned on their back shining torches at the ground. This all seems a bit pointless until you see them throwing out someone who has tried to light up on the dance floor, clearly unaware of the roaming security keeping quite a firm eye on everyone. This generally makes the night run smoother and any infrequent trouble is resolved quickly and easily.

Well known for its variety of dance music which veers away from the mainstream club feel, Sankeys has a real range of music playing, and it usually hosts more specialised nights with specific well established DJs. On its weekly nights deep house, tribal, breakbeat and funky house are the usual genres. It is best to see check the line up before you rock up as if a popular DJ is on then the night may require tickets and already be sold out. There's also the occasional band night and it makes quite a nice alternative venue to watch and upcoming Manchester bands play one of their first gigs.
