Super Saturday Of Service
Events : USA : LA : New Orleans : Super Saturday Of Service

Time : 8:00 am - 1:00 pm
Phone : (504) 525=5678

On the eve of Super Bowl XLVII, the Super Bowl Host Committee will hold its premier community initiative, Super Saturday of Service. The program will showcase collaboration between the Host Committee, NFL, City of New Orleans, the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC), Young Leadership Council (YLC), the Urban League of Greater New Orleans Young Professionals (ULGNOYP), and the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity that provides improvements to five NORDC playgrounds and their surrounding neighborhoods.
The NFL Foundation annually provides a $1 million matching grant to each Host City, typically to be used to fund the development of its Youth Education Towns (YET Centers). Having a direct impact on the local community is a major focus of the NFL. Since the NFL provided a YET Center for New Orleans for Super Bowl XXXVI, the NFL agreed to creating a new initiative for Super Bowl XLVII. After several months of planning and collaboration with the City of New Orleans, NORDC, and the NORD Foundation, the Super Saturday of Service was developed.
The Super Saturday of Service will result in the renovation and beautification of five NORDC playgrounds and facilities, along with improvements on the NFL YET. Funds from the City of New Orleans, the NORD Foundation, and NFL Charities will be used to complete major capital improvement projects at the Lyons Center, Hunter's Field, Kingswood Playground, Harrell Stadium and Pontchartrain Park prior to Super Bowl XLVII.
Harrell Stadium
Drainage and site preparation for installation of new artificial football turf, installation of the artificial turf reclaimed from the Saints 2012 season and the 2013 Super Bowl; fencing and building enhancements
Lyons Center
Katrina related repairs to its gym, computer lab, stage, pool, and activities room, computer lab and a facility maintenance fund. Chevron will also directly contributed to the development of this facility by funding the installation of a state of the art dance facility within the center
Hunters Field
Repairs to the field lighting, installation of new basketball courts, new computer lab, aluminum seating, above ground storage and HVAC, a new playground and a facility maintenance fund
Pontchartrain Park
Natural turf replacement, walking paths, softball and tee ball fields, and playground equipment, portable filed goals, football scoreboard repair or replacement
Kingswood Park
Park lighting and training equipment installation in concert with the new walking path, installation of solar lighting and construction of a new picnic shelter
The Super Saturday of Service will not only celebrate these capital improvements, but will deliver an opportunity for volunteers to invest "sweat equity" on Super Bowl weekend helping to complete additional projects at each site in cooperation with local non-profit organizations, Host Committee sponsors, and the communities in each neighborhood. In order to accomplish this at the highest level possible, the Host Committee reached out to two of the strongest New Orleans area non-profit organizations for assistance. YLC and Habitat for Humanity, and ULGNOYP have partnered with the New Orleans Super Bowl Host Committee to coordinate the logistics for this event. YLC will use their expertise in event coordination and logistics to handle transportation, signage, and volunteer distribution. Habitat for Humanity will handle the coordination of other participating non-profit organizations as well as all painting and construction projects implemented. The Urban League Young Professionals will work directly in each community to coordinate volunteer and youth programming efforts.
The City of New Orleans, the Host Committee, ULGNOYP, YLC, and Habitat have also reached out to the neighborhoods surrounding the different parks to find out what manageable service projects are needed in their areas. These projects will be the main focus of our volunteer activities the day of the event. We welcome the participation of other local non-profits to help tackle the projects needed to improve the neighborhoods around the five parks.
In addition to the five NORDC sites, the Rosewood neighborhood in Baton Rouge, LA will additionally benefit the Super Saturday of Service efforts. This neighborhood is a Habitat for Humanity of Baton Rouge site that contains 55 lots for homes, 46 of which have been completed. On the Super Saturday of Service, a group of over 200 dedicated volunteers from BASF, and the local Habitat for Humanity will complete one additional house as well as start the framework to complete two more houses. This includes building walls and painting the interior and exterior portions of the houses. The group will cap off the day by landscaping eight homes in the neighborhood. This volunteer effort will speak to the dedication of the New Orleans and Baton Rouge area citizens and provide a much needed service to the communities in both regions.
The NFL YET facility will receive several improvements with the help of Rebuilding Together New Orleans (RTNO). On October 27th, RTNO will hold a fun community service event to kick off the construction improvements at the NFL YET. Rebuilding will also host the Kickoff to Rebuild which is an annual NFL sanctioned event hosted by Rebuilding Together. It will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013, during Super Bowl weekend. For 18 years, Rebuilding Together has partnered with the NFL in Super Bowl cities across the country. During this year's Kickoff to Rebuild, 300 volunteers will rehabilitate ten homes, build a new play structure and resurface a basketball court in the Algiers neighborhood of McClendonville. From assisting long time homeowners with overdue repairs to providing a safe place for children to play, this event will transform and revitalize this deserving neighborhood.
Super Saturday of Service Review By Kenniece Johnson : Miss A
Worldwide sports fans and New Orleanians alike are counting down to Superbowl XLVII held in the Mercedes Benz Superdome between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. As we prepare to chow down and cheer on football’s biggest day, the Superbowl Host Committee of New Orleans is making an effort to give back to the city of New Orleans in its Super Saturday of Service on Saturday, February 2, 2013.
In collaboration with the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC), Young Leadership Council (YLC), the Urban League of Greater New Orleans Young Professionals (ULGNYP), and the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, the host committee, with the help of volunteers from all over the world, will seek to refurbish five NORDC playgrounds. This major community initiative is made possible by a one million dollar grant donated to New Orleans by the NFL.
Playground projects include:
Lyons Center- Katrina related repairs to gym, computer lab, dance facility, etc.
Harrell Stadium- instillation of artificial turf to football field with a portion of the turf reclaimed for the Saints 2012 season and the upcoming Superbowl
Hunters Field- installation of field lighting, new basketball courts, computer lab, aluminum seating, a new playground, etc.
Pontchatrain Park- natural turf replacement, walking paths, softball and tea ball fields, playground equipment, etc.
Kingswood Park- park lighting, construction of new picnic shelter, etc.
Volunteer applications for this project are no longer being accepted at this time. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to help. Hosting a Superbowl party? Ask attendees to bring canned goods and other non perishables to be donated the local Food Bank. Make a friendly wager on who will win and donate proceeds to a local non profit. Help do minor improvements on the home of an elderly neighbor. There are many ways to help. The ball is in your court!
Game Day Fan Plaza
When : February 3, 2013
Where : Champions Plaza, Garages 1 & 2
Time : 1:00 pm - TBD
Price : FREE for Ticketholders
In place of the long-running NFL Experience, the League will introduce Game Day Fan Plaza to fans in South Florida. This interactive football experience will be open to the general public, free of charge, on Pro Bowl Sunday and to ticket-holders only on Super Bowl Sunday.
Four different interactive games will challenge fans' football skills. The Extra Point Kick will test your ability to convert an extra point through regulation NFL uprights. Let It Fly puts you in the quarterback position and shows you just how far you can toss a spiral downfield. Refine your passing skills with the Quarterback Challenge by showing off your accuracy on special targets. And once you ace all of those, Touch Pass will test your ability to pass with enough arc to clear the defender and enough aim to drop in into the target.
Plenty of concessions will keep even the hungriest of fans satisfied, while sponsor exhibit areas will offer a wide variety of entertainment and giveaways.
Game Day Fan Plaza will also showcase the NFL FLAG Tournament of Championships on the Youth Clinic field at 12:30 p.m. ET on Pro Bowl Sunday.
Game Day Fan Plaza 2010 Review By Alex Woodward : Gambit
The NFL anticipates more than 111 million viewers tuning into the 2013 Super Bowl on February 3. In New Orleans, thousands of football fans will descend upon the city in the days and weeks before the game — and the NFL plans to roll out dozens of events downtown.
Today at the Superdome, the Super Bowl XLVII Host Committee announced its slate of events before the game. Frank Supovitz, NFL vice president of events, said the "NFL experience" will start "when you roll out of your hotel rooms." The main draw will be the NFL Experience from January 30 through February 3 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Tickets to that event are $25 general admission and $20 children 12 and under.
The "interactive theme park" encompasses 800,000 square feet of the Convention Center, with items from the Pro Football Hall of Fame, clinics for kids hosted by NFL players and coaches, and interactive activities for kids and families.
An NFL Tailgate Party will move from the Convention Center and to the Superdome, and the Game Day Fan Plaza, which debuted at Superbowl XLIV, will take over Champions Square and all stadium parking roof decks — making the event four times the size of the square.
More after the jump...
Super Bowl Media Day, held inside the Superdome on Tuesday, January 29, will open to the public — tickets are $25 and available online. Fans can watch and listen in on player interviews, and portable, personal radios will allow fans to tune in to broadcasts from around the Dome. A media center "fan gallery," in which fans can watch media file stories and air broadcasts and interviews, will be open to the public with free tickets available.
The night before the game, the NFL hosts its NFL Honors awards, which airs on CBS.
The NFL also will air its concert series at the Sugar Mill on CMT and VH1, and a "Super Bowl Boulevard" (described as a "Super Bowl Jazz Fest") will also feature the game's Roman numeral statues, which will arrive via barge on the Mississippi River before docking at Woldenberg Park, with a light show.
As part of the "Super Saturday" day of service, more than 1,000 local and visiting volunteers will donate 5,000 volunteer hours to citywide projects. The NFL also will donate $1 million for five New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) facilities, matched by $1 million from local funds from the City and sponsors. Rebuilding Together New Orleans has invested $45,000 in the NFL YET Center and $250,000 to help build 10 homes in Algiers. Youth fitness campaign NFL Play 60 will host five hours of exercise at five NORD facilities, and Samaritan's Feet will donate 1,500 shoes at each NORD site.
In addition to "environmental initiatives" like carbon credit donations, recycling, food recovery (working with Second Harvest Food Bank), bike valet and bike sharing programs, Environmental Committee Chair Patty Riddlebarger from Entergy announced Entergy's Geaux Green game — a winner will receive two tickets to the Super Bowl plus travel and accommodations. The winner will be announced January 10.
Tree-planting organization Hike for KaTREEna also will plant 3,000 trees, and Greenlight New Orleans will donate energy efficient lightbulbs to New Orleans homes.

The Bombay Club
About The Bombay Club
To find the Bombay Club, patrons make their way through the enclosed, tunnel-like driveway of the Prince Conti Hotel. Once inside, though, it seems like the trip is much further, perhaps all the way back to the 1990s.
The hallmarks of this unusual French Quarter spot have remained largely unchanged since that decade — namely its opulent, Old Empire ambience, the suave, retro-style crooners who perform nightly and a martini menu with nearly as many listings as a stock exchange. Food has always been part of the mix too, but this is where the most interesting changes have occured since Ricky Cheramie became chef last year.
It was the duck that first sold me. Sliced to show a rare interior, the skin was crisped into rigid bands supporting a plank of foie gras. Underneath, tiny bits of sweet potato spaetzle were lost in a pile of mustard greens, but these greens — soft, peppery, vinegar-streaked — proved a great pairing on their own for the lusciousness above.
A native of Lafourche Parish, Cheramie is an alumnus of Emeril's and Commander's Palace, and the influences these bona fides suggest turn up in his food, which is robust, ambitious and, at its best, anchored by good bedrock cooking.
The thick, expertly blackened Cajun prime rib was truly awesome, served properly medium rare under all of the crusted seasoning. Blackened scallops were just as deftly done, and then lavishly plated over a hash of brabant potatoes with crawfish and smoky chunks of tasso, all in a pool of creamy corn sauce.
The cooking is exuberant, though sometimes a touch too much. Pan-fried drum featured a large, beautifully textured specimen with a crown of crabmeat and a dollop of bearnaise, but the potatoes layered below contained so much unadvertised bacon that it nearly overpowered the dish. At times, it seems the menu and the cooks are not quite in sync. The star ingredient in grilled artichoke salad was cold and soggy, showing no evidence of the grill but plenty of the can. Prices are high, and consistency could be better.
The windowless, agreeably dark room is full of nooks and corners, including curtained booths as private as opera boxes with sofas for side-by-side dining. That's a setting for a long evening, but the Bombay Club always has functioned well as an off-the-radar spot for a quick appetizer at the bar. The calamari, long a specialty here, remains solid.
The short, basic wine list runs a distant second to the cocktail program, which is detailed in a bound volume of 24 pages. Some concoctions are pretty exotic, though the bartenders generously steer folks back toward the menu's strengths, which are the classics and their subtly updated progeny. These are impeccable, though if all you really want is a taste of prom night from the class of '98, you can still insist on an appletini.
The Bombay Club Review By Daniel G. : Washington, DC
My girlfriend and I were looking for a good late night spot in the French Quarter off of rowdy Bourbon Street. We found Bombay Club online and made a reservation for 11pm on a Saturday night. After being seated in a semi-enclosed booth, we ordered Vesper and Dirty martinis which were both delicious. Bonus points for bringing the olive juice on the side so I could make the drink "as dirty as I like."
My entree was the Eggplant Stuffed Shrimp Creole and my girlfriend ordered the Blackened Maine Sea Scallops. The scallops were generously portioned, prepared perfectly and absolutely delicious. The show-stopper was my dish. The Eggplant Stuffed Shrimp absolutely blew me away. One of the best dishes I've had in the city. The eggplant was amazing and the Adouille Creole sauce was outrageous. I ate every bite.
Throw the Legendary Luther Kent and his band into this mix with some live entertainment and it made for a near perfect experience. Highly recommended.
Maple Leaf Bar
About Maple Leaf Bar
The Maple Leaf Bar is a music performance venue in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is also a bar and hosts a variety of other events.
The Maple Leaf is on Oak Street in the Carrollton neighborhood of Uptown New Orleans. Opened on Feb 24th 1974, it is one of the longest continuing operation of New Orleans’ music clubs with live performances seven nights a week.On that first night Andrew Hall’s Society Jazz Band played and were there every Sat for 7 years. Many of the old time musicians were featured including numerous members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The Society Jazz Band left in the summer of 1981 but have played there several times since including the 30th birthday party in 2004. Musical styles represented include blues, funk, R&B, rock, zydeco, jazz, jam bands and any combination thereof, hosting both local performers and touring national acts. Frequent performers at the Maple Leaf have included local legends James Booker, the Rebirth Brass Band, Papa Grows Funk, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, “Money Mike” Armstrong, The Radiators and Henry Butler. Unannounced sit-ins are not uncommon; Bruce Springstee
n once dropped in to jam with The Iguanas and Jon Cleary’s band was once joined by his frequent employer, Bonnie Raitt. The Leaf, as it is sometimes referred, has also been an important incubator for the city’s many up-and-coming bands formed from the ranks of local musicians and music students at Tulane University, Loyola University and the University of New Orleans.
The poet Everette Maddox was a famous denizen of the Maple Leaf and as of 2006 famed psychologist Dave Corey can often be found holding forth at the bar. The Everette C. Maddox Memorial Prose & Poetry Reading, held every Sunday in the courtyard at The Maple Leaf, is the longest running poetry reading in North America.
The Maple Leaf also hosts other events, including poetry readings and fashion shows. The Krewe of OAK, a neighborhood New Orleans Mardi Gras krewe, starts and ends its parades at the Maple Leaf, where it also holds its Krewe Ball.
The Maple Leaf is portrayed in many books and stories by New Orleans writers. It is thinly disguised as “The Raintree Street Bar” in the Ellen Gilchrist short story “The Raintree Street Bar and Washerteria” (the bar formerly housed a small laundrymat within it). Poems about it can be found in books and chapbooks such as Mirror Wars and Shards, by Nancy Harris; Body and Soul and Rhythm & Booze, by Julie Kane; and The Everette Maddox Song Book, Bar Scotch and American Waste by Everette Maddox. There have also been three anthologies of poets who have read their work at the Maple Leaf: The Maple Leaf Rag (1980), The Maple Leaf Rag 15th Anniversary Anthology (1994), and the Maple Leaf Rag III (2006).
R&B singer, songwriter, record producer, actress, and fashion designer Beyoncé Knowles recorded a promotional video for her single Déjà Vu, which features rapper Jay-Z, at the Maple Leaf in June 2006.
Maple Lead Bar Review By Jenn C. : Oakland, CA
Hands down, there is no better place to party for your money in New Orleans - they always have an awesome lineup, cheap cover charges and cheap beer. The locals know how to behave in a crowded bar (just be careful when it fills up with tourists) and the place shakes and shimmies when the crowd is dancing and having fun (ok, not nearly as much as MidCity R-n-B but still...). Great patio and a great vibe.
One of my favorite memories was showing up late with a 6'7"friend who was a coach at O.P. Walker - we were acquainted with someone in the band and since the front door was too packed, we were invited to enter the club through the stage door - since the stage is only like 8 feet across, I just put my hands up and danced across the stage to the front of the crowd but poor Larry tried to be unobtrusive, crouching down and pretending to be invisible - there's just no way that a 6'7" tall man can go unnoticed crossing a stage that is only like 10 x 8 feet - it was pretty hilarious turning around to watch him sneaking toward me. We had a blast that night nonetheless and I have that memory of my friend to last me a lifetime!

The Bourbon Swamp Review By Conrad B. : Piedmont, Oakland, CA
So uh, Friday night, and the upstairs bar was empty. We completely took it over, and I really don't remember much after that. We didn't get thrown out, so I guess nothing too bad happened.
The Haitian bathroom attendant is cool. Visit him!
Swamp things will destroy you, as they destroyed 20 of us.
I can't tell you if your experience will be nearly as magical as ours, or if we could ever repeat this experience, but I credit The Swamp with allowing us to go all out. :)
(Yeah, we spent some money, too...)
