The King Of Dancehall
One of Jamaica's much-loved child stars, Beenie Man's recording career began in 1981, when he dropped his debut single "Too Fancy." He spent the next decade honing his craft beside dominant dancehall figures like Shabba Ranks, Admiral Bailey, and Ninjaman before beginning his ascent to true reggae stardom in the early '90s, giving an acclaimed performance at Reggae Sunsplash in 1992 and clinching his first No. 1 single in Jamaica with "Mattie" in 1993. He also won the first of eight consecutive DJ of the Year Awards the same year. His career took a sizeable turn when, under the guidance of his producers Sly & Robbie, he converted to Rastafarianism in the mid-'90s. The life change inaugurated a fresh slew of top singles and, ultimately, his inexorable rise to the top of the reggae world.

The last 20 years have seen Beenie Man successfully defend his title as the self-proclaimed "King of the Dancehall" and expand his popularity beyond Jamaica to the rest of the world. With a slate of recent hit albums like The Doctor (1999), Tropical Storm (2002), Back to Basics (2004), Undisputed (2006), and The Legend Returns (2009), as well as an increasingly adventurous list of collaborations with artists like Arturo Sandoval and Wyclef Jean, Beenie still reigns supreme, over 30 years after his career began.
