Sylvain Restaurant
Eats : USA LA : New Orleans : Sylvain Restaurant

About Sylvain Restaurant
On May 22nd, 1796, Jean-Francois-Marmontel and Andre Getry’s one-act comic opera Sylvain was performed in New Orleans. Residents hungry for something culturally rich, inventive and unpredictable were captivated by the performance. That same year, construction was completed on a three-story carriage house at what is now 625 Chartres Street by local landmark developer Don Andres Almonaster y Roxas.

Since then, the building has been owned by numerous New Orleans dignitaries and characters, including notorious French Quarter Madame Aunt Rose Arnold who presided over her own Storyville brothel and lived at 625 Chartres during the 1920s. Standing over six feet tall, Aunt Rose was an imposing figure and friend of many of the neighborhood’s bohemians as well as friend of famous authors; Sherwood Anderson who wrote of her in “A Meeting South” and Faulkner is also believed to have used her as his muse, patterning his character “Miss Reba” after her in “Sanctuary” and “The Reivers.”

Although the world has changed profoundly since the days of Almonaster, Faulkner and Miss Reba, New Orleans has managed to maintain its reverence for tradition. Much like the first opera ever performed here, the city still places a premium on those attributes of culture, inventiveness, and mystery (and a good bit of humor as well).

In fall of 2010, Sylvain opened its doors in one of the world’s most celebrated neighborhoods at the very site of Mr. Almonaster’s Chartres Street carriage house. By celebrating the city’s storied past as well as creating a menu and design aesthetic that blends both the past and future, Sylvain provides an oasis of style and unmatched quality. From dining on elevated bistro classics to enjoying a wine program and cocktail menu that leans toward the classics while embracing the resurgence of cocktail culture (including an offering of a Sazerac left on the bar every night for Miss Reba), guests will savor the restaurant’s unspoiled rawness and modern luxury.

Our tree-covered courtyard only adds to the space’s timeless feel to create a truly New Orleans experience. By restoring the historic doors, ceilings, walls and balconies to their original glory and adding elegant seating, lighting and artwork, Sylvain feels at once historic, yet thoroughly modern — all done with a nod to the comedic opera that bears its name. And isn’t a skillfully-performed comedic opera something any truly great New Orleans restaurant should aspire to be?

Sylvain Restaurant Review By Marc R. : Milwaukee, WI
Very cool place. Love the layout, the vibe, the decor, and the staff here. All around, the place feels like it could be a top flight bar / restaurant in NYC, LA, London, Paris, Chicago

...or Milwaukee.

Milwaukee you say? Happy Daze? Harley Davidson? And... really?

Well, I walked into this place and sat next to a Irish-music performer from Milwaukee, and then met owner Seth McCusker who hails from Bay View in Milwaukee. This place felt like one of the cool local food/fresh food places in Bay View and it showed. As a Milwaukee native I was happy to see a team doing such innovative food and drink and in-house stuff that even the Fonz would be proud.

They take reservations. I wish they didn't, but they do - it seemed  busy and buzz worthy enough to go first-come first-served, but reservations are nice if you have them. There were families here and it was nice to see some older kids having a nice meal with cool moms and dads. You can even make them on Yelp!

We waited for a place at the bar and drank a few of the house cocktails while we waited. These were great. My favorite was the Dead Man's Wallet! I had a few. I am a fan of Rye.

I tried the Moscow Mule, and I think it was ok. This should be served in a chilled copper cup and it could have been a tad sweeter. Copper cup!

The other drinks were amazing.

The music was good too. Background, but still cool.

The food was amazing. They focus on local fresh food, and while we had simple food - the house burger and chicken sandwiches - both were amazing. We had a long chat with other people at the bar - an amazingly beautiful woman who seems to come in for a cocktail every night - She told us this was her favorite bar in the city -- and the Irish music guy who ran down the list of items he ordered that night, then told us about the things he had tried in the past and they all seemed amazing.

Thanks for the shot Seth.

Everyone else: this is a must visit place in NOLA!

The Delachaise
Bars : USA : LA : New Orleans : The Delachaise

This upscale wine bar also offers cheese plates, frog legs, french fries and other small plates. Take a seat outside overlooking St. Charles Avenue or claim a table indoors. Open daily. The Delachaise Review By Feldman A.  : New Orleans, LA
It isn't a dive. And it ain't a speakeasy. This bar is a more romantic variety, which is always nice. Who doesn't need a bit of romance in their life? What goes better together than romance and drinking? :) It isn't lowly and depraved, you see, because it is bathed in the nostalgic glow of a a Parisian "bar au vin" except that one finds this little alcove on St. Charles Avenue with the Street car passing by in the window. Midnight in Paris, move over because La Delachaise is the sort of NOLA bar where stories happen, classy stories, people!, where random encounters turn into lifelong friends and persistent lovers, where your dreams become a slightly twisted version of their original Disneyesque intentions, enabled by the lubricant of peaty 12 year old scotch.

The interior decor is somewhere between French cafe and boxcar, and with a bit of light and a bit of class, and the grand avenue with the grand southern mansions just outside, an altogether winning combination, and all in all a real swell place to have a drink.

If you want to get drunk, and you want it to be lovely, and do not give a $&%$ how much it is gonna cost you, or if you want to find a corner table with dim lighting, and shift your friendship into romance, La Delachaise is alright.  You feel kinda embarrassed even bringing up the issue of price when talking about an establishment as soulful as this one. I mean the rent along St. C can't be cheap, and you want, need DLC to survive, now don't you? Cuz Columns down the block has already been invaded by the devil. Maybe DLC has been invaded too.

But when I asked what kind of scotch I should order, it stimulated a conversation all along the bar, barmen joining in to offer the last word. You see, they have a heck'of a collection. If you come alone, don't worry, because with a bit of effort, you'll make friends easily enough. The patrons and the waitstaff are friendly although the latter is occasionally out-gunned, overrun by the natives, and by the tourists who seem to trickle in from the nearby hotels... sigh. Last time we were there, we got real friendly with some group who had come in to NOLA from Austin to give their buddy a big send off before le marriage.

Speaking of French, they have a great winelist. Besides, La Delachaise is an institution, a refuge from the storm for any uptown Mardi Gras, parade when this little beautiful box of a bar seems even more like Heaven. One of the most romantic bars in NOLA . . . idn't it?  Plus, their French fries and other delices are awesome (although slightly over price). Location, location, location. You are paying for that and the vibe, but at LA DLC it is kinda worth it?

Club Razzoo Review By V. : Atlanta, GA
I had the best damn time here.  I mean an even better time than I have in the clubs in my home town.

A sales clerk at the Chico's recommend this place to us.  I'm so glad she wrote the name down cause, I wasn't sure I would remember.

3-1 drink specials are not my kinda thing, mostly because its well drinks, and those well drinks get me too tipsy to fast, but I could see lots of people taking them up on the offer.

I passed on the shooter tubes, but advise anyone and everyone, say yes to the jello shots (syringes)

I danced for hours, and so did the other people here.  We did the wobble, dropped  it like it was hot, and  backed our things up.  It was GREAT!!!

Shout out to the security guard, I slipped him a $20 and he let me stand next to the stage the whole nite.  As he was busy telling other folks to clear the passway, me and my friend stood our ground and PARTIED!!!!!

Count me in for coming back again if I'm ever in New Orleans again.  Old skool and hip hop heads need to get here!!

Time will sneak away from you....we went in around midnight, and stumbled into a taxi at about 3 in the morning.
