Who Is 78Violet?
78violet, formerly known as Aly & AJ, forged platinum success with 2005’s debut, Into the Rush, received critical acclaim with 2007’s Insomniatic, and are now back with a new name and 3 years worth of material. Until 2009, 78violet were known as Aly & AJ, the multi-talented singers, songwriters, and musicians who also happen to be sisters and well known actresses. After several successful releases as Aly & AJ, the Michalka sisters (now 24 and 22) -- decided to take their sound to the next level. Aly explains: “Our music spoke to us in a whole different way after carefully analyzing where our music fit, in terms of sound and imaging. We knew we were ready to share these songs because we now had the freedom and confidence to express ourselves as women, no longer as teenage girls.”

The sisters were both born in Torrance, California but spent most of their childhood in Seattle, Washington. At the young ages of 12 and 14 they were signed to Hollywood Records in 2004. They released their debut studio album Into the Rush on August 17, 2005. The album debuted at number thirty six (#36) in the United States, selling over 24,000 copies in its first week and was later certified Platinum by the RIAA. "Rush" was their first official single peaking at number fifty-nine (#59) on the Billboard Hot 100. "Chemicals React" is the album's second single, the song became their second Hot 100 entry, reaching the top 50 peaking at number fifty (#50). Into the Rush earned them the "Contemporary Inspirational Artists of the Year" nomination at the 2006 American Music Awards.[3] Into the Rush has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide as of 2012. In 2006 the duo released their second studio album and first Holiday album Acoustic Hearts of Winter, which peaked at seventy-eight (#78) on the Billboard 200 and was preceded by the hit holiday single Greatest Time of Year. Their third studio album Insomniatic debuted at number fifteen (#15) in the United States on the Billboard 200, selling over 39,000 copies in its first week and was later certified Gold by the RIAA . The album's lead single "Potential Breakup Song" is their most successful single to date, it was certified Platinum by the RIAA for sales over 1,000,000 copies and managed to peak at number seventeen (#17) on Billboard becoming their first top twenty entry and international hit. Time magazine named "Potential Breakup Song" one of the 10 Best Songs of 2007, ranking it at #9. It also has gained over 45 million views on Youtube.

After departing from Hollywood Records in 2010, 78violet announced they would regroup and take some time away from music and focus on their acting careers. After spending 3 years in and out of the studio and co writing with the likes of Nancy Wilson, Rivers Cuomo, Butch Walker, Mike Elizondo, Mikey Einziger and Guy Sigsworth, they spiked the interest of legendary producer David Kahne (Imogen Heap, Regina Spektor, The Strokes, The Bangles, Paul McCartney) After self financing their entire album in New York at Avatar studios the sisters decided to produce their own music video for their single “Hothouse” under their production company “Violet House.”
