Videos : Katy Perry : Roar

Bow down to the Queen of the Jungle Katy Perry!

On Thursday, Perry released her jungle-themed video for her anthem, "Roar," which is the first single off her upcoming album, Prism.

The campy and comical video shows Perry fighting a tiger, painting an elephant's toenail and swinging through the jungle, but the video takes on a much deeper meaning. "Roar" kicks off this new chapter in a her career, and in it, she proves that she's no longer a scared girl; she's empowered, fierce and has found the strength to overcome all adversities. MTV News breaks down the five key scenes to the "Roar" video.

Bye Bye Boyfriend
The video starts off with Perry and her boyfriend crash-landing in the middle of the jungle, and instead of being a concerned about his girlfriend's well-being, he's too busy snapping selfies and having her hold his bags. With a timid demeanor, Perry follows her boyfriend into the jungle night and watches as he gets mauled by the tiger. This is the moment when Perry discovers her inner strength and is now well on her way of finding the tiger and fighting back.

Letting the Light In
After becoming spooked by a spider and almost bitten by an alligator, Perry finds her footing, and as she sings the first chorus of "Roar," fireflies light up the night with a tiger taking shape and illuminating the sky.

Fans may have expected Perry to go darker with this video, especially if they took cues from the "Roar" teasers (burning wigs, California Gurls funerals), but instead, she decided to fight off the darkness, a sentiment she echoed when she talked to MTV News recently about her upcoming album. "The reason why I called this record Prism is because I actually finally let the light in and then I was able to create all these songs that were inspired by letting the light in and doing some self-reflection and just kind of working on myself," Perry said.

Queen of the Jungle
Now that she has the confidence to tame the tiger, which, metaphorically speaking, could represent her detractors, she needs the right tools. Perry befriends a monkey, Ripley, resourcefully builds a spear out of a stiletto, showers with an elephant and emerges from a cave looking like a fierce Queen of the Jungle. In her leopard-skin bikini and grass skirt Perry flexes her muscles and swings through the forest bringing her one step closer to victory.

Taming the Tiger
The climax of the video happens as Perry squarely faces off against the ferocious tiger. Face-to-face, Perry drops her spear and finds the "eye of the tiger" and watches as he bows down to her greatness. The tiger takes on the title as "Kitty Purry," while she rightfully takes her place on the throne as Queen of the Jungle, proving that she didn't need anyone but herself to conquer her obstacles, and in doing so, found peace, with not only the jungle animals, but with herself.

It Was All a Dream?
For a split second at the end of the video Perry leads us to believe that she is still safely on the plane and that the entire video was a dream. However, Perry emerges in her Sheena, Queen of the Jungle attire looking victorious, empowered and fierce.

Now, even though the video concludes with the words "the end" splashed across the screen, Katy Kats, be on the lookout, because this is only just the beginning of what's to come during Perry's "Prism" era, and we can't wait to see what she does next.
