News : Miley Cyrus Condemns Media Post-VMAs

Miley Cyrus has condemned the media following news that there is an arrest warrant for the homeless man who accompanied her to the MTV VMAs last weekend.

Cyrus took 22-year-old Jesse Helt to the MTV VMAs as her guest, having met him at homeless youth centre My Friend's Place.

The singer asked him onstage to help collect a prize for her 'Wrecking Ball' video to raise awareness about homelessness among young people. Having received the gong from talk show host Jimmy Fallon, Helt gave an emotional speech about youth homelessness in the US as a teary Cyrus watched on.

It has since emerged that there is an arrest warrant against Helt for a probation violation, and that he is wanted in his native Polk County, Oregon. Police arrived at his home in Salem, Oregon, following an interview his mother gave to a local newspaper saying that that Helt had flown back after the VMAs using money given to him by Cyrus, reports The Telegraph.

The warrant dates back to November 2011 when Helt failed to report to his probation officer. Helt spent three weeks in jail after pleading guilty to trespass and criminal mischief in 2010, and was sentenced to probation and drug treatment.

Cyrus has condemned the media for seizing on the story, writing on Twitter: "People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included… I hope that this can be the start of a national conversation about youth homelessness and how to end it… Does looking down upon the homeless help people excuse their inaction?"
