Gear : Watches : i.amPULS by will.i.am

Yes, musician and all-around famous dude will.i.am is indeed coming out with his own smartwatch, through his company i.am+. It’s called the i.amPULS, and will.i.am himself got up on stage to talk about it at Dreamforce 2014, Salesforce’s tech convention taking place in San Francisco this week.

i.amPULS is a standalone smartwatch, in the same vein as the Samsung Gear S. Among other things, that means it has 3G connectivity, so you’ll be able to use it to send and receive calls without a smartphone. To its credit, for better or worse, the i.amPULS seems to take things one step further—there’s been no mention of it being a companion to any smartphones at all. This really will be a completely standalone device.

In that light, the device is admittedly impressive. Despite being slim, i.amPULS has 1 GB of system memory, 16 GB of internal storage, a 780 mAh battery, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. It’ll also be a serviceable fitness tracker, thanks to a pedometer and an accelerometer.

On the software side, there will be built-in, dedicated, native apps for fitness tracking, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and music playback, along with basics like email, calling, texting, a calendar, and the like. It appears this is all proprietary stuff, including the digital assistant, called AneedA. AneedA was developed with Nuance Communications, and can schedule calendar appointments, play music, track fitness stats, post to social media, and make calls, among other things.

We’re not sure when i.amPULS will be available, but we know that AT&T will be the carrier. You can sign up to receive a notification when pre-orders start on the i.am+ website.
