Who Is Knife Party?
Knife Party is an Australian electro house/dubstep duo founded by two members of the electronic rock band Pendulum; Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen. In a December 2012 interview with Mixmag they revealed that they are named after a song on the Deftones album White Pony.
Their first EP, 100% No Modern Talking was released digitally through Pendulum's imprint record label EarStorm. It was released as free download from their official website, Soundcloud and Facebook, as well as being available for purchase on Beatport and iTunes on 12 December 2011. The EP originally was to feature 'Back to the Z-List' but was replaced with 'Destroy Them with Lazers' as the duo had decided to abandon the track. A tweet in December 2011 suggested the possibility of a remix EP in the future. The EP title refers to the lack of "Modern Talking", a wavetable in the software synthesiser NI Massive commonly used to create "talking" basslines.
Their second EP, Rage Valley was released digitally through EarStorm and Big Beat. Rob tweeted a screenshot taken on his PC showing three of the four final Rage Valley tracks, captioning the photo "3 down, 1 to go", referring to the mastering of the final track "Sleaze". The title track "Rage Valley" was originally named "Fuck Em" but the title was changed "for secret shady reasons you will never know" according to Rob. "Sleaze" was also re-titled, the original being called "Until They Kick Us Out". Originally Rage Valley was set to be released before the end of April 2012, but due to multiple setbacks the release was delayed for four weeks. It was made available for purchase on Beatport on 27 May 2012 and iTunes on 3 June 2012.
On 9 August 2012, Knife Party announced via Twitter that work on their third EP has started. On December 22nd, it was announced via Twitter that the EP in its entirety would be played in a live streamed set from The Opera House on 1 Feb 2013, and release will follow shortly afterwards. Despite rumours, Rob denied on Twitter that the EP is titled 'Haunted House'. This was the name of their Halloween tour only.
Rage Valley EP Review
Although Knife Party hails from Australia, its take on dubstep parallels the exaggerated production normally associated with European recordings. Gareth McGrillen and Rob Swire, formerly of the drum and bass act Pendulum, come out swinging on Rage Valley, Knife Party's aptly titled second EP (and its first for Warner Bros.). If the bass wobbled any lower on the aggressive opening title track, it'd only be audible to dogs and large mammals. But the duo cleverly dodges one-trick-pony novelties by mixing in '80s-toned synths and Italian-flavored disco flourishes before dropping funny Nature Channel samples into the start of “Centipede.” With an earth-shaking low end, this number is the EP’s gem. It sparkles and glows with neon keyboards while dropping a bottom that could rattle the fillings from your teeth if played through high-end German speakers. “Bonfire” gets summery with a buoyant reggae bounce while recalling the group's prior penchant for jungle rhythms. And yes, Knife Party maintains its seismic bass on this one, as well as on the closing “Sleaze,” which grooves on a foreboding melody akin to the Jaws theme.
