Who Is Lyn Saga?
Lyn Saga is a power-pop singer/songwriter whose catchy melodies, anthemic choruses, and energetic performances have drawn fans from coast to coast. Classically trained by Chris Paglia (The Calderone School) in music theory, jazz guitar, and classical guitar, Lyn began writing original music at an early age. Growing up, she spent every penny of her weekly allowance from her parents collecting records of 90’s alternative rock artists like Weezer, Hole, Fountains of Wayne, Foo Fighters, and the Smashing Pumpkins. Inspired by these artists, she performed in several bands throughout high school, playing locally in the New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia area.
In 2009, Lyn moved to Los Angeles to pursue music as a solo artist. She recorded rough acoustic recordings of her songs on her laptop computer and played open mics around Los Angeles. In late 2010, Lyn wrote and recorded a 5-song EP entitled ‘The Ball of String EP’ with producer Jim Roach which was independently released in early 2011.
Lyn is truly the epitome of a DIY (do-it-yourself) artist. She persistently works on her craft, writing original music and booking her own shows at traditional music venues, coffee houses, bars, and open air venues in the Los Angeles and New York area. Currently, she is in the studio with producer Evan Brass recording a full-length album which will be released early 2013
Venice Review
On January 13, 2013, Lyn Saga releases her first full-length album, Venice, which features ten high energy power-pop tracks. With classical training in music theory, jazz guitar and classical guitar, Saga began writing and performing at an early age. Although she grew up on the east coast, the bright sounds of California beach rock shine through in each of her songs with lyrics that are endearing, yet blatantly honest. The tracks showcase memorable melodies that are paired with hard snare hits and crunchy distortion. With uniquely expressive vocals, she weaves intricate stories into every track.
Venice begins with the title track that is inspired by Saga's real life experiences. Contrasting the positivity of carefree weekends spent on Venice beach with the hardships of working long hours at a stressful job during the week, Saga's voice expresses desperation and longing for days on the beach and the freedom of being yourself. Staccato guitar riffs on the verses with creciendo feedback lead to lively choruses that reflect the sunny disposition of the song.
'On This Way', Saga provides anecdotal lyrics about childhood beliefs and how growing up leads to disillusion with the world. Her juxtaposition of the naivety of youth with the harshness of adulthood parallels vocal and musical elements of the song. The beginning of verses display sweet, high timbre vocals with bouncy guitar during Saga's lyrics about childhood and youth. Later portions of verses that depict the reality of growing up contain distorted guitars, hard hitting drums, and deeper vocals that express angsty frustration. Intricate vocal harmonies and big band horns blast throughout the chorus giving the song masterful complexity and musical depth.
In a tune describing the typical party girl in a brand new light, 'I Didn't Mean To' pokes fun at an overused expression. The introduction features frumpy, distorted guitars and snare drum rimshots which gives listeners a feeling of sloppy intoxication. Not so apologetic in her apology, Saga's lyrics are brutally honest in a 'sad but true' manner.
With finger picked guitar and a Weezer-esque garage sound, 'Stay' begins as a sentimental love song before the crash of the drums and heavy distortion lead into the chorus. With driving guitars and hard hitting snares, there is a sense of aggression in they lyrics “please oh please don’t be alarmed when I take you into my arms, why oh why'd you run away, I just wish you’d stay…”. A hint of 50’s inspired rhythms and melodies uniquely underly the chorus making for a runaway hit.
'I Believe', the wildcard track of the album, is a bit different from rest. Electronic drums provide a 'dancey' feel to the song while high distortion guitars build to an explosive chorus. Lyrically honest, but hopeful, the track is an an anthem for dreamers who have to encountered naysayers, but never stop believing in themselves.
Overall, Venice is a fun, upbeat, yet insightful power-pop album. All ten tracks are uniquely crafted exhibiting talent and vision that sets Lyn Saga apart from others. You don’t want to miss out on the chance to discover this artist! Pick up a copy of Lyn Saga’s Veniceon January 13, 2013.
