Mex food, So Cal Mex food is frankly not about fancy food, it's typically basic and the tastes often not super complex (outside of mole), and that's what makes it so difficult to stand out above others - But El Indio does.

Although Mexican beans and Mexican rice often look the same, live in San Diego long enough and you'll be able to tell the difference at any Mex joint on the first bite.

Most everything at El Indio has that subtle taste difference locked into the best of the best. It's All Good.  You may get the hint by now tho, this is not about some "Fusion" cuisine, this is about basic good Mex food of the So Cal variety (which is quite dif from eating mex in TJ).

There's plenty of popular places like El Indio has become nationally more recently, but this is the one place the Food channel got right for once. San Diego knew El Indio was a treasure long before the outsiders, and thankfully the popularity has not changed the food.

Their triumph in my book is their beef tamale. Just exquisite.

Tamale's can be very different. While some have thin masa, some have thick, and the meats can vary wildly, how can a tamale not be about the masa that covers it before the meat? It can't.

Unlike many, I have sought out nearly every tamale in SD as a marker of good mex food, and this is likely still the best there is.

Tho not listed on the menu, if there for lunch and not wanting a heavy meal, get the 'Tamale Prepared' and it will come on a small plate with just some beans and chips - perfect for a smaller appetite.

While in line, on vacation or not, get a big bag of chips and the plain salsa in the mini-fridge to take with you for a snack later.  Their chips are home made and wonderful, but the salsa - the basic, no frills salsa is just amazing good. You'll thank me later, I promise.

So, El Indio - Congrats on being noticed nationally and becoming the go-to for many visiting San Diego, but Thank You for not changing for those of us lucky enough to live here and eat at your digs any day.  We're very lucky people.

Be Careful crossing the street with your goodies!  Wouldn't want that delicious food to get hit by a car.
