News : Metallica's Orion Festival to Hit Detroit in 2013
Metallica's Orion Music + More festival is heading to Detroit next year. Details are scant at the moment, but they will stage the festival somewhere in the Motor City on June 8th and 9th, 2013. The group promises to announce the exact location, the lineup and ticket information in February.
The metal giants staged the inaugural Orion festival in Atlantic City this past June. They headlined both nights, staging complete performances of 1984's Ride the Lightning and their self-titled 1991 disc. The festival featured a wide range of other acts, including Eric Church, Modest Mouse, Best Coast, Avenged Sevenfold and Arctic Monkeys.
"I always think that our fans are as open-minded as I am, as Metallica is, and sometimes in the past we've been proven wrong," Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone shortly before the festival. "And that's OK, I'm not going to sit and tell people what they should or shouldn't embrace. I don't walk around and think they're all Metallica fans, I think they're all festival fans, music fans, people out for the experience. I hope our fans are going to be open and supportive of everybody that's here, and if they're not, I'm going to find them and kick their ass."
Metallica are in the early stages of recording a new album, but they don't expect it'll be out until 2014. They have a handful of overseas dates booked for next year, including the five-date Soundwave Festival in Australia, two shows in South Africa and the Rock in Rio festival in September. As of now, the Orion festival is their only confirmed American appearance.
