NFL Experience Driven By GMC

The National Football League will produce the 21st NFL Experience at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans opening January 30, 2013. The NFL Experience driven by GMC is the most exciting continuous event surrounding Super Bowl XLVII - pro football's interactive theme park offering participatory games, displays, entertainment attractions, kids' football clinics, free autograph sessions and the largest football memorabilia show ever.

The ticket includes all games and attractions. $25 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available by calling (866) TIX-4NFL (849-4635), visiting Ticketmaster.com, or visiting the NFL Experience driven by GMC box office at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Tickets will go on sale one hour before opening daily.

Media Day Fueled by Gatorade

For only the second time in Super Bowl history, the NFL will offer a limited number of spectators a unique opportunity to attend Media Day Fueled by Gatorade on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Starting today fans are able to purchase tickets at Ticketmaster.com.

Super Bowl XLVII will be played February 3, 2013 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. During Media Day, fans will sit in the stands at the stadium and watch thousands of media from around the world interview members of the participating Super Bowl teams on the field. Fans who attend Media Day also will get a rare chance to see the preparations of the stadium for Super Bowl XLVII.

Fans will receive a Media Day gift bag that will include a radio to tune into the dayâ€™s coverage on NFL Network and listen to some of the individual player interviews from the podium microphones audio. In addition, there will be player and cheerleader appearances. Fans also will have access to the stadium club and concession and merchandise stands will be open for those in attendance.

Tickets are available for purchase through Ticketmaster.com. Tickets to attend Super Bowl XLVII Media Day cost $25.00 each.

Doors will open at 8:30 am (CT) to all ticket holders. Media Day will begin at 10am (CT). All seating for the event will be reserved.

Most pieces are of British origin with a decided emphasis on Windsor Castle and the Royal Family’s life there. Here is a sample of some of the works you may encounter during your visit:

Lobby - Near the Front Desk, view 17th century lavish court life in King Charles II's Last Sunday, a painting by William Powell Frith, which was originally housed at the Royal Academy of London. Nearby, an exquisite example of Nicolas de Largilliere’s work, Portrait of the Prince of Wales and His Sister (James and Louisa are portrayed as young children of James II). Also greeting arriving guests are King George V and Queen Mary in full Empire regalia, in a portrait by J. Barton, and a Thomas Thornycroft bronze sculpture of a young Queen Victoria on Horseback gracing the entrance to Le Salon.

Second Floor - Adjacent to the Polo Club Lounge, view works such as Sir Joshua Reynolds’ portrait of Captain William Saltern-Wylett, RN and Viscount Linley’s (nephew of Elizabeth II) Marquetry Scene which is a view of the Queen’s private rose garden at Windsor. And, inside the Polo Club sits the George V Cup, a trophy presented to the 1910 winner of Ascot.

Also on the second floor along Nash Hall are 25 hand-finished chromolithographs of Windsor Castle's private and State apartments by Sir Joseph Nash as commissioned by Queen Victoria in the mid-nineteenth century. Gracing the walls are also two notable depictions of Windsor Castle, including a fine 1885 painting by W.R. Stone, and Windsor Castle from the Thames painted by Thomas Gainsborough, RA. A scale model of Windsor Castle, an original from the renovation of the castle in the 1820’s as presented by the renowned Sir Jeffrey Wyattville, is also displayed.

In the Palm Court, see Sir Anthony Van Dyck's Queen Henrietta Maria (consort to Charles I) and exquisitely on display in the Boardroom, two early 18th century works - a Brussels Tapestry, of Vertumnus and Pomona and a Jacob Huysman painting portraying A Noblewoman with Her Three Children.

Club Lounge (22nd Floor) - Handsomely gracing the private Club Lounge are other fine examples of Windsor royalty that include a prophetically haunted Edward VIII When Prince of Wales; David, as he was known, wearing the uniform of the Welsh guards; and a needlepoint tapestry worked by the prince himself.

About Cochon

Donald Link and Stephen Stryjewski, Cochon’s chefs and co-owners, have not reinvented Cajun cuisine. The crowds (Cochon may be the toughest reservation in town) and accolades (the partners have won three Beard Awards between them) just make it appear that way. Spend a few minutes with Cochon’s flaky crawfish pies, restorative rabbit and dumplings or signature crisped pork cake with turnips and cracklins and it’s clear the chefs respect their source material too much to modify it beyond recognition. Part of the thrill of eating in this post-industrial Warehouse District space — or in Cochon Butcher, the post-industrial sandwich shop and meat shop next door — is that you can’t tell if the kitchen is bucking for brownie points from Acadiana natives — by dishing up authentic boudin balls, squishy-hot rolls and hogshead cheese — or pandering to picky urban tastes — by making it all look like something you could serve in Seattle. The answer is that everything is the genuine article, provided you open your mind enough to imagine a Cajun grandmother roasting local goat to serve with fresh beets and peas or slathering fried alligator strips with chile-garlic aioli. If you thought you knew Cajun cooking before trying Cochon, you weren’t wrong. It just turns out there was more to learn — and love.

We ventured here on our last afternoon in NOLA and had an amazing meal--especially loved the grits and greens. They are, hands down, the best grits I've had in the South. The oyster meat pie was interesting; sweet potatoes with hog jowls and alligator bites were tasty as well. After 4 visits to New Orleans, this little find turned out to be one of our favorite restaurants in the city.

Tipitina's. It has treated me well over the years. I saw a lot of bands there, made a lot of friends; got me some mojo, magic and madness. In many ways I was born there, into my adult life, my New Orleans life.

Tip's is in the middle of its 30th anniversary music extravaganza and the resilience and survival of the unprepossessing tavern at the corner of Napoleon and Tchoupitoulas is certainly testament to the will of the New Orleans music scene to not only keep it real, but to just plain keep it.

When I was planning my move to New Orleans in the summer of 1984, the truth is, I knew very little about the city. I'd passed through town one drunken night four years earlier, but the breadth of my knowledge lay primarily in the stories that my brother -- an inveterate Mardi Gras aficionado -- had passed on to me.

I was, at the tender age of 24, dialed into the Neville Brothers, the Meters and the Wild Magnolias. He had told me about them, shared their records with me, gave me beads from his Carnival escapades, which I wore as talismans during my games in Washington, D.C., recreational basketball leagues.

And he told me about Tip's. About the noise, the heat, the pianos. My brother Richard, he hung at Tip's. Though it was a new joint then, it had the age of a century hanging over it like pallid cigarette smoke, and he used to describe to me being piled up in a mass of humanity, sweating, dancing and making love to the music from this crazy, imponderable roadhouse in New Orleans.

I've seen many bands there myself since.

Peabody. Cowboy Mouth. Marcia Ball. Trouble Funk. Darden Smith. Sophie B. Hawkins. The BoDeans. The Ramones. The Beat Farmers. Jerry Jeff Walker. Cracker. Sweethearts of the Rodeo.

Problem was, Tip's was closed when I moved here that summer. Word was that the world's fair had somehow put it out of business, though that never made any sense to me. I was disappointed to say the least.

But I've watched over the years, witnessed the place struggle, teeter and right itself under various managers and owners and it reminds me of the Prytania Theater, always on the edge of demise but in the end: immortal.

Tipitina's is New Orleans.

Indigo Girls. Cowboy Junkies. Stephen Forbert. T-Bone Burnett. Randy Travis. Song Dogs. Shawn Colvin. Michelle Shocked. Lyle Lovett. BeauSoleil. Bruce Daigrepont. C.C. Adcock.

It's where I saw Clifton Chenier, the man credited with bringing zydeco off the Louisiana prairie and into the American Heartland. In the rest of the country, the King was a guy named Elvis. Here, it was an accordion player with a red velvet crown and a cape.

When I first moved here, everyone always told me the same thing: You need to go see Clifton before he dies.

I thought this was an ominous recommendation, to say the least. But I did it. When I saw he was playing at Tip's one night, I dutifully made the pilgrimage to see the King of Zydeco, the legend. That music, it broke open new chambers in my heart. I was never the same. And Clifton Chenier was dead within weeks.

Boozoo Chavis. The Boondoggles. Sonny Landreth. Henry Butler. Dr. John. Dwight Yoakam. Joe Ely. Trout Fishing in America. Warren Zevon. Jason and the Scorchers. Thanksgiving: the Musical.

Through the '80s and early '90s, I used to get there early, long before the bands would start. I most often went alone. I would claim the same spot every time, perching myself on top of the cigarette machine at the end of the bar, just to the right of the stage, in front of the wall of speakers. I assume that is why I'm hard of hearing now.

On my first Mardi Gras in New Orleans, I went to see Dr. John play on Lundi Gras night. It was insane. It was the first time I ever left a club in daylight. I went home and slept until the middle of the afternoon, missing Zulu, Rex and all but the very end of the truck float parades. I was, as the Doctor likes to say, traumaticalized. I had missed my first Fat Tuesday.

I swore I would never do that again, never stay out so late on Lundi Gras that I missed Fat Tuesday and with only six or seven exceptions, I have kept that promise.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Grady Gaines. Johnny Adams. Wolfman Washington. Steve Riley. The Iguanas. Rebirth Brass Band. Paul Cebar and the Milwaukeeans. James Cotton. Chris Whitley. The Stump Knockers.

One night last summer, I started writing the names of all the acts I'd seen at Tip's. There must be dozens more, scores more -- maybe hundreds, I don't know -- that I have forgotten. The place, it is magic.

I don't get there as much as I used to. But to this day, when I am driving up Tchoupitoulas at night and I see the crowds congregated on the corner outside the club, I always roll down my window and call out, "Who's playing?" I just want to know. Even if I'm not a part of it on any given night, I am comforted by the fact that people are walking in the door of that hallowed musical church, past the bust of Professor Longhair, the Bard of the Crescent City, the muse, the hero.

He wrote the song "Tipitina." And the people did the rest, for the next 30 years.

Definitely one of the better quality venues in the city. Been here several times. Ended up going last night to see Killer mike and Gza, and it was a memorable experience.

The bartenders are sweethearts, and just the right amount of friendly. I ended up leaving my card here last night, called this morning, and they seemed used to the protocol...no problems there.

You can tell they paid specific attention to small details in this place to make the acoustics and experience here pleasurable.

The Atlanta-based rapper Ludacris ’ hometown Falcons did not make it into Super Bowl XLVII . But apparently at the last minute, Tipitina’s reps say, he decided to get in on the weekend action in New Orleans anyway, and booked a performance (sponsored by Heineken and Patron) at the venerable Uptown music club.

Luda has been on the Dirty South scene since 2000, when the then-newly established Def Jam South subsidiary repackaged his independent debut album for a quick trip all the way up the Billboard charts. Since then, his boisterous, rowdy, fun style on the mic has earned him multiple top 10 hits both on his own and as a high-profile guest on tracks with the likes of Missy Elliott , Mariah Carey, LL Cool J and others. (He’s also carved out the time to establish an acting career , most notably in the “Fast & The Furious” franchise, and to open a restaurant in Atlanta.)

Club Ampersand is built into an old bank in the Central Business District of New Orleans. Ampersand takes the decor of The Metropolitan and The Republic up a couple notches, getting a bit classier with a Euro/South Beach flair. Sprawling couches line the walls for VIP members and post dance mingling. Their DJs blare Top 40, house and mash-ups among other genres, keeping party-goers up til 6 and 7 in the morning. Resident mixologists craft up some delicious liquor drinks, and shot/beer specials can be had depending on the night.
