Welcome back what is rumored to be one of the most expolsive and exciting Superbowl weeknds to date. The Velvet Couch is contining the countdown to Superbowl XLVII with day 9. You will continue to be updated with tips on where to go, what to do, where to stay and most certainly while in New Orleans where to eat and where to party. We look forward to celebrating the journey to Superbowl XLVII featuring The Suit & Tie Album by Justin Timberlake with commentary by The Velvet Couch.

Welcome Back, America. It's Been Awhile.

Too long, actually. Eleven years have passed since the last Super Bowl was held in our quaint little banana republic. The last time many of you were here was for Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002. The game was only five months removed from the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Tom Brady and U2 put on an amazing show that night, provided, of course, you made it through Superdome security in time to see it.

A lot has happened here since then. New Orleans has flooded, read its last rites, won a Super Bowl and largely recovered from the worst man-made disaster in American history.

We're in the midst of a full-blown renaissance. Seven years and five months after Hurricane Katrina, a new New Orleans has emerged. The new New Orleans is younger, smarter and hipper, yet unapologetically different. Thousands of smart young people have migrated here to work in the film industry and tech field.

You probably won't recognize the Superdome. It's undergone an extreme makeover. Everything is new, right down to the name.

The Superdome isn't the only thing we've improved since you last visited.

Many things are better, namely our schools, streets, business community, transportation system and government leadership. The small stuff mainly. And your tax dollars are partly responsible for many of these upgrades, so we thank you for the support.

In some ways, New Orleans has never been better. We're the fastest growing major city in the country according to the U.S. Census Bureau. We rank among the national leaders in "brain gain." Travel + Leisure continually votes us the Best American City to Visit.

This isn't to say we're completely back. Far from it. Vast swaths of our city remain desolate. Take a disaster tour. You'll be flabbergasted.

Too, our crime and poverty rates are out of whack. And our elected officials continue to run afoul of those pesky federal laws.

Mary Matalin, the co-chair of the local Super Bowl Host Committee, wasn't too far off when she said recently that most Americans still think "we're under water – or under indictment."

Aside from the trifling erosion and corruption, life's pretty good down here. It's different - but in a good way.

As you prepare for the showdown between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 2013, we hope you find time to discover our world-famous food, music and joie de vie.

The Super Bowl Breakfast is an NFL-sanctioned event hosted by Athletes in Action. The signature event of Super Bowl week has taken place in the game’s host city every year since 1988, drawing sellout crowds to hear from some of the game’s biggest names. The Bart Starr Award, given away at the breakfast, honors Starr’s lifelong commitment to serving as a positive role model to his family, teammates and community. The winner of the Bart Starr Award is determined by NFL player balloting at the end of the regular season. The award is one of only two individual honors selected by the players themselves.

Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys wins 2013 Bart Starr Award

Athletes in Action announced today that Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten will be honored with the 2013 Bart Starr Award, which recognizes one NFL player for outstanding character and leadership in the home, on the field and in the community.

Witten will be honored during the 26th Annual NFL-Sanctioned Super Bowl Breakfast, presented by Companies with a Mission, on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at 8 a.m. CST at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans (601 Loyola Ave.).

Other finalists for the award were Matt Hasselbeck, quarterback for the Tennessee Titans, and Justin Tuck, defensive end for the New York Giants.

The morning will include special guests Lewis Johnson, Brent Jones, Danny Wuerffel and other NFL athletes and coaches to be announced.

The winner of the Bart Starr Award is voted on by NFL players and is named after NFL Hall of Famer Bart Starr. The award honors the player who best exemplifies Starr’s commitment to family, teammates and the community. Past winners include London Fletcher, Drew Brees, Kurt Warner, LaDainian Tomlinson, Reggie White and Mike Singletary.

In his tenth season in the NFL, Witten has been active in numerous charitable projects. He founded Jason Witten’s SCORE Foundation, which supports a variety of outreach programs and building projects in Texas and his native Tennessee. Specifically, the Jason Witten SCOREkeepers program places trained male mentors in battered women’s shelters throughout Texas. In an effort to break the cycle of domestic violence, the mentors demonstrate positive male behavior for the children living in these shelters. Witten has also been involved in the Children’s Cancer Fund Fashion Show, NFL Play 60, Boys and Girls Club of America and the Make-a-Wish Foundation, among many other projects.

New Orleans restaurant critic Tom Fitzmorris rates Brigtsen's 94/100. Restaurant diners voted Brigtsen's "TOP CAJUN RESTAURANT" in the 2000 Zagat survey.

Frank began his culinary career in 1973 while attending Louisiana State University. In 1979, he apprenticed at Commander's Palace Restaurant under the guidance of Chef Paul Prudhomme. In 1980, Frank became the first Night Chef at K-Paul's Louisiana Kitchen when the restaurant began dinner service. During his seven-year tenure with Chef Prudhomme at K-Paul's, Frank attained the position of Executive Chef. Paul and the late K Prudhomme were instrumental in helping Frank and Marna open Brigtsen's in 1986.

Frank supports numerous charitable endeavors, including Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation and the Chefs' Charity for St. Michael's School. He is a member of the American Culinary Federation.

Brigtsen's Restaurant Review By Valery C. : Brooklyn, NY

SImply the best dining experience in NOLA to date, my last meal there, and what a way to cap the first culinary exposure to this interesting city. Truly unbelievable that this 20+ year old institution has fewer than 70 reviews. This family-operated restaurant offers a complete experience encompassing ambience, service, and food, at the level of an upscale white tablecloth restaurant but its easy to believe I dined as a guest in their home. Although there's no requested attire, this is the kind of place where you may want to dress up a bit.

Coming here involved taking a taxi to uptown. Across from Dante's Kitchen, another restaurant I want to try but saving for next trip, both are located in an area that seems primarily residential, blending right into the neighborhood. In fact, Brigtsen's is inside a Victorian cottage, and you really appreciate it when you walk in and find the host desk in the entry hall. I don't know how many dining areas they have in total, but on the first floor, there were tables set in two adjacent rooms and an extended, enclosed porch area, where we sat by the window. Simple and warm decor, really like a home.

The frequently changing menu is simply split into a starter group and entrees, about 10 choices each, and almost as many desserts. They also offered a very reasonable four-course prix fix menu with some flexibility. With a bottle of red for the table, our group got down to choosing our dinner after some tips and introductions from staff. This proved to be both challenging and very enjoyable; there was simply so much we wanted to try. We could only agree that no duplication was permitted.

When our starters arrived, so too did the food tasting begin, as we sampled each dish, then passed on to the next person. Excellent all around. We had tender, delicious rabbit tenderloin, creamy and savory butternut shrimp bisque, crisp tender and rich veal sweetbreads, and smoky gumbo with rabbit and andouille sausage. Nothing left standing in this round.

On to entrees, we had even better rabbit prepared paneed, a local style that resembles a fried cutlet, a well-made broiled gulf fish, the exciting signature seafood platter, and a disappointing roast duck, the only major low point to the meal. I love the seafood platter, which looks like its own tasting menu, with 6 items to try, of which 4 out of 6 received rave reviews, particularly the unattractive but improbably tasty baked oyster bienville, grilled drum fish with crawfish, and an amazing take on cornbread, cooked in a ramekin, crusted top over a savory, melting center, shrimp chunks inside and flavored with jalapeño smoked corn butter. Sauces and accompaniments to the entrees were very good. I'd point out that this meal gave me some of the best rabbit I've ever had.

There was really no question that dessert was necessary, especially after our server mentioned from the beginning that their pecan pie was fantastic. And what a pecan pie, the best I ever had, with its crispy crusted top, rich pecan filling, and restrained sweetness, in a marvelous caramel sauce. They make a satisfying bread pudding, although it was not my favorite one on this trip, and a good eggnog creme brûlée.

This was, from start to finish, a sublime dining experience. The service deserves special mention; genuinely welcoming, friendly, with a sure hand. You feel taken care of, and not just by an employee. I will surely dine here again.

Stopping by Victory early on a Saturday night was definitely one of the highlights of my recent trip to New Orleans. It being around 6pm on a sweltering Saturday in June, the place was quite empty, which was just fine with me - having the undivided attention of a talented mixologist like Ian can never be a bad thing. Was fascinating to hear about the national mixology scene from someone so enthusiastic about it. I ordered a Honeysuckle cocktail, which was much more intense and richly flavored than the light, floral drink I expected based on the name. (I take myself entirely too seriously to order fruity beverages but honeysuckle? How could I resist.) The combination of honey liqueur and cinnamon gave it a distinctly Indian, chai sort of flavor. Really good. Having won me over with the Honeysuckle, I let him pick my next drink - he opted for a flaming strawberry chartreuse combination that was as delicious as it was fun to watch him make.

And oh right, the food. Truffle popcorn & bacon wrapped scallops - both right on target.

I'd been making my way through a number of New Orleans bars that were mentioned in Esquire's 100 Best Bars in America - Napoleon House, Tujague's, the Spotted Cat, Chart Room, etc. - but I'm so glad I stopped by other, newer bars like Victory and Bar Uncommon too. While Sazeracs, Pimm's Cups and Gin Fizzes are all delightful, it was much more exciting to see what new cocktail inventions the city's many talented mixologists are coming up with.

Now that the world agrees New Orleans is the number one spot for nightlife, according to TripAdvisor.com’s Annual Travelers’ Choice Awards, here’s my take on a trendy spot that’s helped New Orleans get such a high honor – The Republic.

Referred to mistakenly as “Miamiesque” (no disrespect to that wonderful city), The Republic (828 South Peters) is definitely not your traditional New Orleans hole (gem)-in-the-wall (which personally, I prefer), but it’s heaven for those seeking an urban slash chic night club where usually, you’ll have to dress to impress to get in. But this isn’t your typical froufrou night club either and dressing up (versus dressing down) will depend on what you’re there for.

Based in the Warehouse District, inside a 150 year old building full of history, The Republic sets itself apart as it hosts some of the most popular (and not so popular) indie rock, electro punk, afro-indie, indie-folk, noise-pop, noise-rock, electro-pop or any sub-genre of indie or alternative music you can think of (there are so many), plus funk, jazz, rap and hip-hop.

Some of their most recent concerts include Slightly Stoopid, Julian Casablancas, Infected Mushroom, Gift of Gab, Spoon, and Miike Snow, who preformed to hundreds of enthusiastic fans there the night of June 9th, some driving in from close-by cities and states to catch the unmatched electro beats of this Swedish band. I was there and no lie, they had my hairs pointing straight up, as if my hands touched those silver magnetic balls from Science class, but to the extreme.

The venue is ideal for an intimate crowd. There was no need to go to the upstairs balcony overlooking the stage on this night but other times, the balcony offers some of the best views, especially if you land a spot in the first few rows. The bars are conveniently situated on both ends of the club and mix up great drinks. I’m also really fond of their women bathrooms – so clean and elegant with a beautiful, classical mirror covering the back wall. (I’ve always had the strange need to check out the bathrooms everywhere I go. Is that weird?)

Plus, The Republic hosts neon friendly throw-back parties over the weekend (which tend to have a younger turnout as the club allows 18-year-olds and above to enter on certain nights), retro to recycled to rampant fashion shows, special fundraisers and other memorable events throughout the year. It’s a great spot to catch your favorite band or let loose with your friends, or make new ones.

He currently holds the Braves team record for career on base percentage (.402), and on July 5, 2007, he passed Dale Murphy for third place on the Braves all-time career home run list.

Jones ended his career in 2012 as a .303 hitter with 468 home runs, 1,512 walks, and 1,623 RBI in 2,500 games with 8,989 at bats. He has the most career RBIs for a third baseman. He is also behind only Eddie Murray on the all-time switch hitters career RBI list. He is considered one of the game's best all-around hitters, and one of the best switch hitters in the history of the game.
