Giving A Legend A Run For Their Money
The Killers certainly gave rock veterans the Red Hot Chili Peppers a run for their money at the ‘Big Day Out’ in Sydney yesterday, delivering an electrifying, hit-filled set that would be talked about long after the night was over.

The arena was well and truly beginning to pack out by the time the Las Vegas natives set on the Orange Stage rolled around. Mercifully the sweltering heat had begun to subside, the sun setting behind thick purple clouds as the band burst onto stage with ‘Mr Brightside.’

The chart-toppers kept coming as drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr, guitarist Dave Keuning, bassist Mark Stoermer and suave frontman Brandon Flowers belted out ‘Smile Like You Mean It’ and ‘Spaceman’ in front of a dazzling LED screen display.

Fat raindrops fell from the sky during ‘Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine,’ while ‘Miss Atomic Bomb,’ one of two tracks in the set from their latest album ‘Battle Born,’ kicked things up a gear with an unexpected pyrotechnics display.

Old favourite ‘Somebody Told Me’ got the masses going, before Brandon really found the crowd in the palm of his hand when he sang a verse of the Crowded House classic ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over.’

‘Read My Mind,’ ‘Human’ and ‘For Reasons Unknown’ had the crowd dancing through the set, and the fun kept up as a glitter cannon rained its contents across the stands.

"Thank you all for sticking around to see us – we’ve got one more song in us" said Brandon, as the set came to a close with the anthemic ‘When You Were Young’ and a shower of sparks.

With a decade of hits to choose from, The Killers delivered fun, polished set full of sing-a-long gems – the perfect complement to the much-anticipated Chili Peppers performance that was still to come…
