About Buttons Restaurant

Chef Keith Hicks hits a high note with his Sunday-supper menu and smooth ’70s vibe with live music, the combination of which draws decked-out jazz lovers seven nights a week. Thanks to a winning formula of soul meets sustenance, Buttons’ dishes, like its signature chicken and waffles (fried chicken and a full waffle topped with fresh strawberries and served with collard greens and deep-fried sweet potato shavings), overflow with big-hearted generosity. Alternately, the shrimp and fish with grits—a pyramid of deep-fried shrimp and catfish perched on an island of grits, topped with a fried egg amid a sea of red-eye gravy—is a soul food-lover’s fever dream. Don’t miss out on Hicks’ namesake gumbo, a dish rich with traditional andouille sausage and pushed over the edge by the addition of crawfish, shrimp, gator, and catfish. Happy hours here are packed and so is the dance floor, especially on the weekend when the music plays until 12:30 am.

Buttons Restaurant Review By Venu N. : Washington, DC
The simple truth is that Buttons provides delicious yet expensive soul food for its patrons in a somewhat cavernous yet rather pleasing environment.  While some of the dishes sport names similar to what one might find at your neighborhood Friday's, the taste of the food sparkles with energy.  The spicy chicken wings are cooked perfectly and are simply divine with the blue cheese finish.  The fried green tomatoes burst with delightful tartness even without the accompanying meats, the over easy egg, and the spring mix for good measure.  The shrimp is decadently coated in an abundance of flavors.    And we haven't even hit the entrees yet.

The pork chop comes smothered in a thick brown sauce that doubles as the perfect complement to your cabbage and rice.  The gumbo exhibits a nice bite for a preparation so far outside of the Louisiana border.  I'm kicking myself that I didn't order fried chicken and waffles, but I most assuredly would do so on a subsequent visit.

There might be better places for your money, but I sure felt that I got what I paid for at Button's.  Strongly recommended for those who want something different than the typical boring chains that are an unnecessary stranglehold on the Addison dining scene.
