Who Is Bok Bok?
Bok Bok aka Alex Sushon is a London based DJ, producer and director of the London-based record label Night Slugs.
Sushon started DJing in 2004, mostly within the genre of Grime music, a scene that was getting more exposure and popularity.DJing since 2004, Sushon started to make his name on London's underground scene around the time Grime music was first emerging from the capitol's tower blocks, and for the first years of his career he played little else. Sushon cites genres of music ranging from Grime, Techno, Baltimore, Jersey, Philly Club, 80s funk as influences.
In 2008 Sushon created Night Slugs, a club night, based mainly in south London with producer and DJ L-Vis 1990. Through the series of events and their DJ sets around the UK and Europe, the duo cultivated a unique sound, cross-pollinating ideas from their various influences until a distinct community of producers crystallised around them.
In 2010 Night Slugs re-launched as a record label with the release of Mosca's Square One EP and have since released artists such as Egyptrixx, Kingdom, Lil Silva, Girl Unit and Jam City.
SPIN magazine described the label as having "developed one of the most distinctive sounds in U.K. dance music, a mutable hybrid of grime, house, electro, R&B, techno, hip-hop, and dubstep"
In 2010 the label released their first compilation, Night Slugs Allstars Vol. 1 which featured artists such as Bok Bok, Jacques Green, Velour (Hyetal and Julio Bashmore) and T. Williams.
Night Slugs have released two full length albums - Egyptrixx's Bible Eyes in 2011 and Jam City's Classical Curves in 2012.
Bok Bok released the Southside EP on the label in 2011 and is set to release the single Melba's Call featuring Kelela before a full EP in May 2014.
In 2009 Bok Bok and L Vis 1990 released the Night Slugs EP on Jackmaster's Dress To Sweat label on which Bok Bok had two original tracks.
In May 2011, Bok Bok released the Southside EP on Nightslugs. The EP featured 5 instrumental tracks, including his break-out club track Silo Pass. Resident advisor described it as "being weirder and much more unique than much of the skewed house being made by his peers."
