Gear : Watches : Basis Peak Fitness Tracker

Prospective and current owners of the Basis Peak fitness tracker have reason to get excited this week, as Basis has announced a new luxury model along with Apple HealthKit and Google Fit integration.

As of this week, you can now purchase a limited edition titanium Basis Peak which, in addition to looking a lot classier so you can (at least try to) pass it off at formal events, is also tougher and more scratch-resistant. To go with it, Basis is also releasing new genuine leather straps that fit all models of the Basis Peak. The new leather straps are available in five colors—black, grey, caramel, light tan, and light pink.

The better news comes from the software side, and is welcome for all Basis Peak owners. Instead of just pushing data from the Peak to Basis’ companion app, the fitness tracker can now be paired with Google Fit and Apple HealthKit. Those larger health apps aspire to take a holistic accounting of your health, and they’re also the default options for iOS and Android users, so for smaller fitness trackers, it’s hard to justify trying to push their own apps exclusively.

Another update coming this week will tweak the firmware of the Basis Peak, which will add a stopwatch and will improve heart rate monitoring. Basis Peak users will also be able to access the Basis Peak Playground, where Basis will be pushing out beta features for users to test and rate, including a geolocation feature that marks your activities on a map for you to look at later.

The app and firmware updates will be available for all Basis Peak owners this week. The Titanium Edition Basis Peak is available in the United States now for $300 from Basis. The leather straps sell for $50 each.
