I have a love affair with Scandinavian artists that dates back to my childhood (the olds like ABBA), and it doesn’t look like it’s stopping anytime soon. Naomi Pilgrim is my latest music crush, with the Swedish/Barbadian not only drop dead gorgeous, but a talented songwriter who has worked with another of my favorites, Lykke Li.
Currently in the process of recording her debut EP, “No Gun” is Pilgrim’s first solo release and a dazzling burst of neo-soul. There’s a lot going on with “No Gun,” with splashes of R&B, pop, soul, and even a little ambient electronic intwined within the military-like melody.
Pilgrim’s simple but introspective lyrics echo the UK’s Kate Nash and Lily Allen, but there’s a greater pull to Pilgrim’s work, as well as a voice that will melt you heart. Lines such as, “I’ve found my soulmate/but we’re screwing just for fun,” and “12 hour flight/didn’t charge my pod,” show Pilgrim’s knack for quirky but relatable lyrics without sounding corny.
It might only be one song, but I’m already giddy with excitement ahead of her EP release, and can’t wait to hear what she has in store.
