Videos : Basic Vacation : I Believe
The trio Basic Vacation are currently on the rise thanks to their brand new single, “I Believe.” The band’s debut song was brought to our attention by @dallasSF via Aaron Axelsen at Live 105 in San Francisco. Since then, it’s performed well on AA’s Top 20 singles chart with a seven week run in the top 10. It’s doing terrific on a larger scale too. The song’s already been picked up by TV networks for promotional spots, and we’re sure more sync placement is on the way. Things are heating up for the trio that was formed in New York, but for Chris Greatti, Jon Paul, and Mike Montalbano - they’re only going to get hotter. Basic Vacation’s debut EP will be released by the end of the year and then their debut full-length album should come out sometime in 2014. Alternative Addiction recently caught up with the guys of Basic Vacation to talk about “I Believe” and to discuss their upcoming debut EP.
“It stemmed from a story of a past relationship that Jon was in,” said Basic Vacation’s frontman and production captain Chris Greatti. “That was the setup for it and then it turned into something else. It turned into a snapshot of our lives at the time we wrote it. We had this new band that we were starting that nobody understood and nobody took serious. We were the only ones that thought anything would come of the music, we didn’t let anything else get in the way... you know, ‘no matter what they put us through.’ The theme with the EP goes with that too. It’s about figuring yourself out. There are worlds colliding; your old life and your new life. That song though, that song’s about us believing in what we had, regardless of what anybody else did or thought, we believed in us.”
The song is the perfect snapshot for Basic Vacation at the time they wrote it, but the same can be said for the EP. The band was figuring out their own sound while different things were going on in their personal lives. Everything that they were writing and living blended together on the EP. For that EP, Chris discussed the producers they worked with and where they got to record.
“It was spread out over a bunch of months as we were figuring out where this music was going to go. We started this at Avatar Studios in New York with David Kahne,” said Greatti. “We had demoes for ‘I Believe’ already fleshed out and a few other songs too. David agreed to help us work on some songs and that was amazing because David’s track record kind of speaks for itself. I mean, he worked with The Strokes and The Bangles. We worked with him first and then we signed with the label around April and got some more money to go into the studio. In May, we went in and worked with Machine in New Jersey on the song ‘World’s Collide.’ Then, at the end of the summer we were in L.A. and we finished the last two songs at Capitol Studios. We recorded ‘Jamie’ and ‘In My Head,’ with Jon Kaplan. We worked with a few different producers for the EP, but all of the production on the songs was pretty well mapped out before we went in. It was all figured out and then we basically took my logic session and opened it up at the producers place and then start rerecording the drums, adding in special parts, and we built up the songs that way. That’s probably what we’ll do in the future too” added Greatti.
As for the band’s current setup with Capitol and the opportunity that’s in front of them, Basic Vacation’s bassist Jon Paul said that they were weary about signing with a major label, but Capitol just felt like the right fit for the band.
“We have a great manager and management team,” said Paul of their manager Josh Moran @ Working Group Management. “Our team was there on the ground floor with us. Our manager Josh is one of our best friends, who just ended up being our manager. That was just good timing. He was an artist and still is an artist so he was weary of jumping into a major label situation, but when Capitol came to us and presented themselves - the way they explained things is that they were working like a small, independent label with big resources. With them, and then with The Atom Factory... between the two of them we feel like we get the best of both worlds, it’s worked out really well so far for us.”
Hopefully a world of placements and promotion is in line for Mike, Jon, and Chris, but at the very least the EP release will be by the end of the year and the music video that they just shot for “I Believe” will be released in October. After a strong finish to 2013, the table will be set for Basic Vacation to have a big year in 2014 with their debut album. Talking about that debut album, Basic Vacation drummer Mike Montalbano said that there will be some carry over from the EP to the album, but they’ll take special care to make the record until they feel it’s perfect.
“Some of these songs from the EP are going to be on the full length, but we’ve already got songs together for that album,” started Montalbano. “We’re going to take as much time as we can to make it as right as possible. You only get one shot with the first album. But we’re really excited for everything that’s going on right now and we’re really looking forward to making a debut album too.”
